How do you remove slide to unlock

How do you remove the slide to unlock function. It seems to serve no purpose.

Hi Chris,

hey, I don't want to cause any ill-feeling! However, firstly I didn't mention pass codes. I don't need one as the iPad is kept in the home for all the family to use to control the music system and occasionally browse the internet. Secondly, slide-to-unlock is not there to prevent the user from accidentally touching the screen and causing some action. It may be there to prevent the user's accidentally hitting the home or power buttons (which take some effort to push) and causing some action, but what are the cnances of that? In terms of cost, benefit and risk, I should 100% prefer to be able to activate the iPad and tap Mute or Pause without having to swipe the screen first, and run the miniscule risk of accidentally hitting a button and then changing the track to which I'm listening. The slide-to-unlock is, to me, utterly useless and indeed an obstacle. It is surely inconvtrovertible that it ought to be a configurable feature, no?

Understood. No worries here. I responded to your post then added to it because of others comments.

It's there to prevent any actions at all without doing something specific.

Unlock the screen then tap something on the screen, It will cause an action. If the screen is not locked and you touch it, chances are something could happen (make phone call, start an app, start/stop/pause playback, etc.).

It's not. Think about it.

Slide to unlock does not prevent the user from pushing the Home/Power button and does not stop any actions when they are pressed.

Pressing the Power button turns the screen on and calls up Slide to unlock or turns the screen off. If held, Power calls up the Slide to Power off button. Same whether screen is locked or not.

Home makes the Slide to unlock screen show up if locked. If unlocked, it simply goes to the home screen.

Keep in mind that you are using it for a specific purpose (remote control).

iDevices are designed for multiple uses. To be put into a pocket, purse, handbag, briefcase, etc. Few, if any, would want their iPhone dialing just becuse they put it into their pocket or purse or their iPad to start playing music when they move it from the table to the counter (just because they accidentally touch the screen).

Chris,

forgive my lack of precision. I ought to have re-arranged the sentence to say "It may be there to prevent the user's causing an action by accidentally hitting the home or power buttons". Also, forgive my ignorance. I was not aware that the iPad could be activated just by tapping the screen. I have to press either the power or home buttons to bring mine to life. I'll look into that. However, I am adamant that the slide-to-unlock feature should be optional.

If the screen is not on, it can't be activated by touching the screen.

But if one was to accidentally tap home or or power (not that difficult) then touch the screen (without screen lock), something would likely happen.

Swipe to unlock is a positive, deliberate action to do something.

However, I am adamant that the slide-to-unlock feature should be optional.

For what it's worth, I too wish the slide-to-unlock screen were optional. The iPad is a great device to use at night for astronomy, and there are numerous astronomy apps that utilize a night vision feature that turns the screen red to save your night vision. Unfortunately, when the slide-to-unlock screen comes on, the night vision feature is inactivated, and the screen blinds you with white light that destroys your night vision. So, it would be great if I just had the ability to turn that feature off. Right now, it looks like the only way I can defeat the slide-to-unlock screen is to use the iPad2 cover, which is not too convenient in the dark.

Oh well, I'll try sending my suggestion to Apple.

Swipe to unlock may be deliberate, but most definitely should be able to be disabled. Along with all the other reasons noted, I have a mentally limited brother-in-law. We bought him an iPad because of applications for persons with his abilities. Having to unlock the screen every time is difficult and frustrating for him. It may be a great safety feature for many/most users, but it should be an option. Apple occasionally makes truly bone-headed decisions about how products should operate, but without thinking through all the possibilities. This is one of those poor decisions.

Looked through this entire thread and didn't really know who to respond to with my comments so I responded to the OP.

I hardly ever see the Slide to Unlock screen. When I close the smart cover on my iPad it sleeps. When I open the smart cover I am right back where I was when I closed. No slide to unlock appears. So if the slide to unlock feature is undesirable just use a smart cover to sleep the iPad.

I covered this issue earlier, but it bears repeating. Yes, the smart cover does defeat the Slide-to-Unlock screen; I think it's the only thing that does. But there are occasions where the use of the cover is not convenient or prcatical. I'm using the iPad with a telescope for astronomy, and fumbling with the cover in the dark is not easy. I also mount the iPad on a vertical stalk, and the cover simply won't stay on there. Another poster uses the iPad on a microphone stand for music, and for the same reason the cover just won't stay on. Having the option to disable the Slide-to-Unlock screen would solve all these problems.
