You don't need the smart cover, just a small magnet.
Now that sounds like an excellent idea. I'm going to try that.
I'm also writing to Apple.
It really should be possible to disable the "slide to unlock" as an "Accessibility" feaure if nothing else.
My mother (who has the early stages of alzeimers) can cope with many aspects of the ipad, but this "feature" is proving to be insolvable.

I would love to drop the slide to unlock feature on my phone. Why can't we just press the power button and then home button?

Because it is not designed that way.
Chris,
you are so observant, thanks for pointing that out. One more question: What does rhetorical mean?
There is already an option to remove "slide to lock" with the smart cover, so why not just add another option, or modify the smartcover option to completely remove slide to unlock?
And please all you haters: Obviously you would still need to push the power or home button to actually activate the device, this would bring you to the HOME screen. Not to an ethereal space from whence you would not be able to unlock the iPad.
My iPad generally rests on my desk and I hardly take it with me. And when I do, I have it in a bag or a case. Please tell me how my bag could possibly misdial someone? The iPad only responds to capacitive touch, meaning your SKIN. And even if that were an issue, turning the feature back on when taking the iPad with you is not a big deal. But having to do the utterly pointless sliding motion several hundred times a day IS a big deal.
I too have a grandma who I've tried to teach to use an iPad, but the sliding thing is just a bit too much.
The smart cover IS a solution. But it's a solution that costs some 40 dollars, and also is in many cases more of an annoyance, if you just have your ipad on your coffee table or desk.
Come on apple, give us the option.

And just because someone disagrees with you (on any topic) doesn't mean they're a "hater". Don't let the liberal media control how you think. đ

Or the conservative media. Seems to be more their specialty

I respectfully disagree but I'll just let it die at that. đ
The more feedbacks are sent the bigger the chance of something being done.
As for the "haters", I was not referring to those who disagree, but rather to those who posed the somewhat strange question of "how would you unlock your device if there was no slide to unlock feature".

I tried that but it didn't work - my iPad still told me to slide to unlock. So, following a suggestion earlier in the thread I bought a small fridge magnet and put it over the sensor on the iPad. Now to fire it up all I have to do is slide the magnet out of the way.

Nice idea but what's the difference between sliding the magnet and sliding the slider?
I doubt you'll get them to remove it, as they are using it to try and sue Samsung, claiming Apple owns the rights to "slide-to-unlock" in all forms.
If Apple removed it, I don't think their case would be very strong.
