Problems with iPhone 4s and bluetooth ear piece?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone else is having a problem with the bluetooth on their iPhone 4s (5.0.1), specifically when paring with a Plantronics ear piece? Right now this is what is happening with my phone:

I'll be using my bluetooth ear piece with no issue. But if I shut off the ear piece and turn off bluetooth, and then I go to make a phone call with the handset, occasionally I cannot get the call to connect with sound. It appears that the calls are actually connecting, b/c the people on the other end report having received my calls, only without sound. Also, related to this problem, sometimes the handset will get stuck in speaker phone mode, where I can hear the person on the other end, but they cannot hear me--something that always happens after I've been using my ear piece.

In the past, doing a hard reset on the phone has resolved these issues for my phone, however, just now it did not, and I was stuck not being able to make calls at all for over 30 minutes. Even when I reconnected my ear piece, the connection was garbled and then it disconnected altogether.

If anyone else has had this issue, or if you have a solution to the problem, I would greatly appreciate your feedback.

I can say difinitively that this is a hardware issue and requires a phone replacement to fix. I dealt with this issue as soon as I got my new 4S (while connected to bluetooth, randomly had no sound and stuck on speakerphone when making an outgoing call). It got more frequent as time went on.

After a couple of unsuccessful calls to phone support (restore the phone, etc.), I went to the Genius Bar. They reproduced the problem, then did a complete firmware-level wipe of the phone. Without restoring any of my data, they connected to the bluetooth headset, made a call, and experienced the same problem again. Satisfied it had nothing to do with the software, they gave me a new phone, and the new 4S worked fine.

I ran the new phone on iOS 5.0 for a week, then upgraded to iOS 5.0.1 about 10 days ago. I have not had the issue since getting the new phone.

Do not let Apple support convince you this is anything but a hardware problem.

>>>>To add another dimension to this fault, I have found that if you lose pairing with the phone due to moving too far from the phone, the described issue occurs as wellrequiring a reboot.<<<<

This is EXACTLY the problem I am having. I cannot repair/reconnect the bluetooth by coming in back into range or hitting the button on my Plantronics Voyager Pro HD. I have to manually go into bluetooth in settings and reconnect it by pressing reconnect button. It's really a pain and unsafe while on the road!

So, did the new phone fix this problem with it?

Anyone else having this problem?

I just got my 4S replaced at the Apple store. Went in with printout of this post, told the guy everything (he seemed overwhelmed rofl) and he immediately gave me a new one.

It fixed the problem I was having with disconnecting bluetooth after getting out of range and random bluetooth disconnects. AWESOME!

Thanks guys!

I have now 100% determined THIS IS A SOFTWARE ISSUE

I wiped my phone WITHOUT restoring my iCloud settings backup and all is well again. Unfortunately, the bug returned within a week. I really didn't do anything different, so it's really bizarre.

The bug has been backed up again by my icloud so my bluetooth disconnecting is back. I am thinking of taking it to the apple store again for diagnosis, but there's nothing they can do.

I think I might have narrowed down the specific setting causing the bluetooth disconnecting described in this thread.

When "raise to speak" is turned off the bluetooth bug occurs.

I am still in the testing phases of it, so I cannot confirm this yet. For those having the bluetooth disconnecting problem, try turning "Raise to speak" ON (default setting)

Any updates?

I am again having Bluetooth issues with yet another version of the iPhone.

It is a shame that since the 3 g apple hasn't had a stable version of Bluetooth on any of the phones.

I still have my old 3G and I never had any trouble with Bluetooth.

I have had 5 iPhone 4 and now am on my 1st iPhone 4s. Same issues with every one.

Looks like I won't stick around long enough for the iphone5

I have iPhone 4s - new a couple months ago. I wear hearing aides using SoundGate technology for bluetooth. SoundGate works great and I hear incoming calls really well and can make outgoing calls too.

The problem? I appear to have no sound with audio files from iTunes, or sound from videos from YouTube. Also, if I pair the SoundGate with the TV then it won't work with the iPhone. This should not happen as the SoundGate is capable of pairing with several differrent devices. It used to pair with my Blackberry and the TV - and if I were watching the TV with the Bluetooth and a call came in, the Blackberry would switch over to the incoming call.

Something is wrong with the software - or hardware. I cannot figure it out. But, the phone works well in making and receiving calls. I just wish I could listen to my favorite tunes, hear sound from web sites, and also pair with the TV. Apple techs need to take notice.

I have now called Apple and asked them specifically which BT headsets thay recommended as compatible with the 4S.

Jabra Easygo. Bought it, paired no problem,. incoming calls clear, outgoing, my customers say they don't understand me a bit too much, also I hope you don't like features like voice command (although Siri works sometimes), incoming caller anounce, or the ability to answer and ignore handsfree.

After 2 days it does the same crap, disconnects with no warning. Today I took a call, hung up, immediatley had another incoming call, I couldn't answer it. I had to cycle the headset power on/off in order to get it to answer the call.

Plantronics M100, same story as the Jabra, archaic technology and connectivity issues.

These are the 2 most highly recommended BT headsets as per Apple Support.....😟

C'mon Apple get it together.

Samsung?

It is sad, I own 2 iPads, a Mac Pro, a Macbook Pro, and 3 iPhones. It's not like I am an Apple newbie, However obviously Apple is using a newbie engineer for their BT R&D.

I have a similar but different problem and would like to hear from anyone who might be having the same issues.

1. I will be on a call using my Plantronics BT headset with my iPhone 4S and connected (expected).

2. I will hang up but remain connected. Another call comes inbound and I hear the ring in the headset but when I tap "answer", it reverts to phone. I then have to quickly go to the screen to manually select headset to return to my BT headset.

3. This does not happen every time but seems to be more frequent with certain callers. I have tried using different headsets without success.

4. It does not happen if I am connected and making an outbound call.

5. Hard reset does not correct.

This did not happen from initial purchase but has become more consistent and frequent over time.

As the phone nears the 2 year mark, a new symptom just developed relative to conference calls...probably not related but will add just in case...

I tap the "+ call" button, dial the 2nd person, and welcome them to call. When I tap the "merge call" button, it shows the 2 lines connected but I only hear 1 line. I cadn switch to each caller but not get them to join as a group of 3 from a sound standpoint.
