My wife's phone was doing the same today.
She removed the sim, to put in another phone, and it stopped restarting!
So, the sim is back in, and, so far (half a day later), all is fine!
Hope this helps,

I'm currently Having the same problem. My iPhone 3GS keep restarting by itself like every 2-3 minutes until the battery exhausted. But sometimes it become okay like nothing happened then it will start to restart itself again after few days of normal operation. I have try to do restore with iTunes but the same problem still exist. Does the iOS 5 update really cause this problem? Any other ways to fix this?

Guys.. the problem happend to me yesterday.. it happened after upgarding the iphone to 5.0.1.
The Solution is:
1- Remove the SIM card from your mobile
2- Enable the (3G & cellular Data)
3- Add the SIM card again.
4- Now .. it will working fine.
Also you can Disable the (3G & cellular Data)
I hope this fix your problem..

So sorry for the extremely late reply!! I've tried that, it turned out okay but whenever I turn off my phone and turn it on again, the problem is there again. So I've found a simpler solution, it's basically the same as yours minus the taking out the Sim card whenever it happens. Just turn on the cellular data & 3G, and turn it off again and voila! Thanks a lot, anyway. <3

eh, like other friends have already said, you may pull out your sim and open the 3g network in your general setting; then plug in your sim. this idea comes from other genius. hope ur phone will be fine!

My wifes has started to do the same, the iphone 3Gs was mine, I updated it to ios 5.0.1 while still using it and it was fine. I did a backup restore of her old 3G phone and again it was find for awhile.
We noticed she doesnt have any data part of her package so we have switched off the data, since then we have this issue.
I had to install a new docking part of the phone as her mic was faulty, I did the sim out, switch on 3G and data and then sim back in. Switched the phone off and then back on. all good.
I stripped the phone down adn replaced the part. again all good. That I night my wife said Shall she turn the phone off in which I replied it should be fine. When she turned the phone on in the morning, the reboot problem was back.
I'm wondering if the problem is to do with the Data on and off. I've also noticed that when the phone is up beofre it reboots, you can pop out the sim and the signal stays the same.
When it does have a problem, she now does a quick reset from the phone which takes about 5 minutes and shes back up and running. its big pain!
Think I will get her on a data package and then try again

i LOVE you!!
i thought my iphone was dead - took it to the apple store who told me it was out of warranty and that they could try and have a look at it but it would cost me £139 and if they couldn't fix it they'd give me a new one - like for like. now whilst i'm perfectly happy with my 3gs and wasn't looking to upgrade, if i'm going to pay for the privilege of a new handset after your last product failed on me, then don't fob me off with a restored 'second' and expect me to be happy about it!
anyway, this worked a charm and after 4 days of dead iphone, he's been revived! hurray!
so thank you
