Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

I have Lion on my Mac ProBook. Using Pages "09 4.1 I can't get special character like "Emoji" to work! Punctuation, arrows, etc work fine.

Why does Pages '09 Version 4.1 offer "special characters" when many are NOT SUPPORTED (according to the user guide) when I try to insert one into my text? My son-in-law is a zombie freak. A picture of a skull looks like it should be available in the "Emoji" section; but it will not, nor will any other emticon, consent to showing up in my text! 🙂 < And this is all I can get on this site! The angry face wouldn't budge! I can get all the arrows, monetary symbols, upsidedown ? and tilde n's to last a lifetime.

For now I all I want from Santa is a skull, a puppy and maybe a dinosaur ..... the last 2 are for grandkids!

Tom,

I found the OTF (OpenType?) file at fonts2u, and loaded it up. However in Lion, OS X 10.7.3, the character viewer representation is the same, no B&W characters for many emoticons. I can paste selected Unicode characters into Pages. However, I can still NOT find or paste many emoticons... Screen shot of my character viewer US Extended with pictograph. There should be alot more, no? Apple version of color emoticons still a no-go in Symbola.

Think I'm beginning to get the hang of how Character Viewer should work. Tried to find the Symbola font (Symbola.otf is installed in Startup Disk/Library/Fonts) in TextEdit and it did not show. After installing, do I need to reboot to allow that font to be discovered? I read where the .OTF font is supposed to automaticlly appear.

Thanks.

Apparently the conflict was due to having dragged Symbola into the Fonts folder instead of the double click install method, which apparently places it in a Font Book. The latter method worked after reconciling (and/or deleting) the original drag 'n' drop version. Also reconciled several apparently "duplicated" fonts (multiple appearances), while in there.

Remember the old WIngDings fonts (versions 1-3)? Those work equally well with this system.

WingDings and WebDings are somewhat special in that they use the Unicode Private Use Area, which means you can not normally depend on anyone at the other end seeing the same thing you do (unless you send them as a pdf or a graphic).
