ibooks ver1.5 pdf file name changed

After updating to version 1.5 (700) of iBooks on my iPad (ver1, iOS version 5.01), almost all of my pdf file names in iBooks are changing once I open those items. Some of the files change to what appears to be a property of the PDF file such as "Microsoft Word - (orginal file name)print.doc(x)" and other just get blanked out all together. The files names in iTunes when I connect my iPad seem fine, but within iBooks on the iPad it is a mess. Any ideas? My understanding is that the way to manage files names for PDFs in iBooks is through iTunes, but right now they seem out of sync.

The method should also work with PCs, if you have a system back-up that is a few months old. The directory/folder that contains the Mobile Applications files will be in a different location on a PC. It may be worthwhile setting it up for routine back-ups (to DVD?) as I am sure other App update blunders will occur. Also I am not sure how to add the previous version to the apps window in iTunes - hopefully PC users can drag and drop like I did with a Mac.

I totally agree that this is not a solution and that Apple needs to rectify the problem as a matter of priority.

I've stumbled upon another workaround - not the best, but it keeps me from going completely bezerk!

For all PDF files (which *may* contain information that iBooks is using to change the PDF file name upon initial open with iBooks) you need to *strip* this information before placing the PDF file in iTunes.

I DO THIS by running all PDF files thru the MAC Automator APP action "Combine PDF Pages". This strips the unwanted information from the pdf files, even if you don't really combine anything. (Help and examples for Automator on this action are readily available elsewhere on this site.)

(I discovered this because I use this process to combine *many* PDF files [song sheets] into a "song book" - and it is never a problem - but create a PDF from OpenOffice/LibreOffice, and you're TOAST - iBook always renames it "MyDefaultDoc"!)

I don't have any options for Windows, sorry WIN folks!

Here's a bit more from my discovery. This is occurring from my OpenOffice/LibreOffice files when I "export to PDF" ONLY IF the file has a "Title" set in the "File->Properties... Description" tab. Clearing this field in my ODT/ODS files fixes the problem on all exported PDF files for me.

This should work for all OSes for files created from OpenOffice/LibreOffice.

Just called standard Apple Support via 1-800-My-Apple. Then, I demanded to speak to level 2 support regarding a problem that is documented at length on Apple Discussions - referenincing this thread - and after the level 2 person reads this thread, he looks something up, and sees that they have a file on it. Then, tell him to please forward this on up to the higher ups -- and they log your call.

I'd love to see Apple explain this change at their next event.

"We decided to make iBooks give your PDF a new, random name evertime you open the file. That way, you will never know what the **** you are opening, which gives you more time to spend on the things that really matter."

I practice law. Instead of lugging 100 pounds of documents, I load up iBooks with my PDFs. At my recent discovery examinations, I opened a file, the name changed, and, after I had closed it, I could never find it again, as it had changed the name.

I am so disappointed in Apple... Samsung is looking very appealing right now.

Good luck with those phone calls, Trisha. I placed one. Judging by this thread, Apple clearly could care less.

I think it's time we ALL learn a bit about the PDF files we are all so obviously using!

In *every* PDF file there is a "title". In (nearly) *every* application that creates a PDF file you can set the "title" of the PDF file. For MAC, this is true for "File->Print -- Save As PDF" and "File->Export as PDF" which covers all the APPLE software, and nearly all non Apple MAC software.

With the latest version of iBooks (1.5), Apple evidently decided that it was a GOOD idea to show the user (that's us) the "title"s WE PUT IN OUR PDF FILES! If the titles of your PDF files are wrong, confusing, or just plain unwanted, then FIX or REMOVE them. Correcting bad or misleading DATA is always preferable to ignoring or hiding it - just because you don't see it doesn't mean it isn't bad - and someone else *will* see it, sometime!

Preview (MAC) shows you the TITLE in the inspector window, so you can see what the title of the PDF file is, even when it doesn't match the file name in the file system. I, personally, think showing the TITLE is a GOOD THING, and should be kept. If Apple goofed anywhere, it was in NOT giving us (their loyal users) a setting in iBooks that would allow us to turn OFF the display of TITLES and use FILE NAMES instead.

How do you change it or remove a title? The options are *way* too numerous to list. If you're totally lost, ask a knowledgeable friend for help, or go to the originator of the PDF file, Adobe, and buy their PDF editor (Acrobat). Also, there are plenty of other editors out there, if you don't like Acrobat.

We realize this (at least I do). The problem is I have countless PDF's loaded in iBooks that have been sorted by the file name, and in order to fix this I would have to go into every single PDF and change the title of the PDF (which never shows up anywhere except on internal data).

When you create multiple pdf's from a single file (Excel, Word, etc) it internally "names" every PDF after the master file, ignoring the new file name you created. Not only that, any PDF pulled from the internet has to be changed internally, and some of these names are locked. So you may be able to change the FILE name, but you can't change the internal PDF name.

Bottom line is Apple needs to fix this mess, ASAP. I know WHY it's changing the file name, but in order to fix this some of us who have hundreds or thousands of PDF's loaded into iBooks would have to collectively spend hundreds of thousands of hours, whereas Apple could simply fix it BACK to the way it was with considerably less time and effort. We are the customers, and we HATE this change.

Clm12704, is 100% right!

To change hundreds of PDF files is not an option.

Why cannot Apple add a "view by file name" option is beyond me.

No one names PDFs by digging deep to change a title.

Name the file " SaveAs" and that is it.

If this is Apple's course across the board, I am jumping back to Windows where life makes sense. (This from a 10 year Mac user).

How can we trust future upgrades?
