ibooks ver1.5 pdf file name changed

After updating to version 1.5 (700) of iBooks on my iPad (ver1, iOS version 5.01), almost all of my pdf file names in iBooks are changing once I open those items. Some of the files change to what appears to be a property of the PDF file such as "Microsoft Word - (orginal file name)print.doc(x)" and other just get blanked out all together. The files names in iTunes when I connect my iPad seem fine, but within iBooks on the iPad it is a mess. Any ideas? My understanding is that the way to manage files names for PDFs in iBooks is through iTunes, but right now they seem out of sync.

I have been experiencing the exact same issues where the PDF file name changes as soon as it has been opened.

It is bloody annoying that Apple has allowed this most-stupid mistake to continue without correction.

I have many files that I must carry in my iBooks. Having the file names changed after I open them is the worst thing that Apple could have done.

I agree that Good Reader is the best solution, but I like to keep all my primary devices and applications Apple.

Having been a member of Apple Discussions for 5-years, my best advice is to keep posting updates to this thread, which will hopefully catch Apple's attention.

I seem to have found a way to restore an old version of iBooks - if you use a Mac with Time Machine.

The trick is to replace the file iBooks 1.5.ipa in the folder

<home./Music/iTunes/Mobile Applications

with an earlier version.

1. Make a backup copy of iBooks 1.5.ipa

2. Make the above folder active in Finder

3. Start Time Machine and go back until the iBooks file changes to an earlier version

4. Restore that file to the current folder

5. Start iTunes and go to the Apps section

6. Delete iBooks

7. In Finder move the iBooks 1.5.ipa file to trash

8. Drag the earlier version (eg iBooks 1.3.2.ipa) to the Apps window in iTunes (it does not automaticlaly recognise it)

9. In iTunes right-click on the iBooks app, select Get Info and make sure it is the earlier version

10. Connect your iPad and uncheck iBooks in its apps list then click Apply (may be this should be step 1?)

If iTunes asks you to transfer a purchase from the iPad click Dont Transfer as it is likely to be the more recent version of Ibooks

11. Check iBooks in the iPad's app list and click Apply. The old version of iBooks should install.

There does not seem to be a way to check version numbers on the iPad but the file size matches that of the previous version. Note that very old versions might have data compatibility problems.

Until Apple fixes the problem you should decline requests to update the iBooks app.

It works!

I tried a PDF that was messed up by version 1.5 and reverting to version 1.3.2 worked for me - after viewing the PDF with iBooks the correct file name is retained in the library listing.

Note that the .ipa file appears to be locked to your iTune's account and so earlier versions cannot be swapped between machines with different accounts. As far as I know the only way to restore on old version is from a back-up like Time Machine.

BTW the important folder is <home>/Music/iTunes/Mobile Applications

where <home> is your home folder. My original posting had a typo.
