Can't log in with AIM name.

My friend is having issues logging into iChat with her AIM name. She can log in on regular AIM just fine, but can't log into iChat.

Any idea of what's going on? Here's the error message she's getting.

I am also having the same problem. Sometimes it says it cant connect because of too much activity, but most of the time it says "The screen name entered is not valid". I've tried many of the suggestions mentioned in the thread and none have worked. I think the problem has to do with the recent software update, since this problem began after installing the update.

Hi,

Try this.

In iChat go to the iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts > Server Settings

Change the Server name to slogin.oscar.aol.com if you are currently using an SSL login (or login.oscar.aol.com if not using SSL)

These are the "Old" iChat 5 and earlier servers which still work.

Hi Ralph

I've been testing myself also and notice that google talk whats also Jabber working very well. Aldo he has an other port 443.

Then i though that maybe some port were closed on my home router. But thats not the case i use Spark prog for contacting with my work with the same setting (port 5222) and that is working very well but i rather wnat to use iChat..

So what i learned that its not at my home like closed ports etc not on the Jabber server because other programs like Spark and Adium can access to the Jabber server.

I must be iChat some how..

Hi,

As you have seen the "New" servers for AIM logins is api.oscar.aol.com

Jabber server vary.

On the whole (everyone except GoogleTalk that I know of) have a server name that is basically the last part of your Jabber ID.

( as in username@jabber.co.au makes the server jabber.co.au)

Google is different (hence the separate point in the Add Account pane for Google).

It's server is called talk.google.com

In almost all cases if you use a SSL login then the port will be port 5223 to login.
Non SSL logins will use port 5222.

iChat will change the port automatically as you turn Off SSL on a Jabber account.

GoogleTalk will also accept a Login on port 443 (most other Jabber servers will not).

I would double check that the server name for your Jabber ID is the last part of the User ID nad change it if it is not.

You seem to be saying it is not an SSL Login so port 5222 would be correct.

Well, we know now that iCloud accounts cannot be used as AIM accounts outside Lion's iChat 6.0.1.

The question is: Why? What is iChat 6.0.1 doing different in authentication? And can we reverse that process so Adium, iChat 5, BeeJive (and not to mention AIM's own app!) can finally sign in with our iCloud accounts again?

Hi,

In previous versions of iChat it seemed to do some very simple logins.

Apple seemed to have passed all @me.com names from MobileMe and all @mac.com names to AIM so that they exist on the AIM Database as names.

It would then appear that the AIM servers would verify the password by contacting the Apple servers for @mac.com and the then @me.com lists (i.e AIM hold the Names but not the Password but can check the password)

iChat 6 seems to also make a Login to me.com as a server on port 443 at the same time it logs in to the AIM Server.

I would guess that this is an extra level of Security that ensures a Login (As in iChat 6) that confirms that the password is allowed to be given out from the iCloud version/section of the @me.com lists.

The AIM Settings page allows you to sign in with @mac.com names and the older ones from MobileMe but not the new ones from iCloud. (even if you are already singed in via iChat)

It also will not work with AIM Express (which would then probably exclude all other clients.)

I would tend to report that via this page http://www.apple.com/feedback/ichat.html

Yep, I just did that. I wrote this on iChat Feedback:

iCloud accounts don't work anywhere but in iChat 6.0.1

Dear Apple Support team,

I find it really annoying that I cannot use my Apple ID for AIM anymore like before.

It has been an Apple ID / MobileMe ID for several years.

But since I upgraded to iCloud, the only app that can connect to AIM using that ID is iChat in Lion. For my home commuter, this is ok.

But if I'm on iPhone, I'm lost. There's no iChat on iPhone, right? I have been using BeeJive, the best IM app from the App Store all the years when my Apple ID still worked as AIM name. But AIM simply does not accept my password anymore.

Even the AIM account management pages on aim.com reject my login. Can you please fix that again? An AIM account that can't be used anywhere is almost useless.

And I don't want to give up my lovely Apple ID just because you bar out other AIM clients.

(By the way, in the list of iChat versions below you only have 5.0.3 (Snow Leopard) as the most recent to select. You should add Lion...

Hi,

I have tended to keep different IDs for different apps and uses so I have a Login for these Discussions that I now have made my iCloud ID.

However I cannot use it in iChat 4 or 5 (As I have two other computers that I can have logged in).

For this reason my issue is not with an existing @mac.com name that is now an iCloud @me.com name as well.

I notice the feedback site does not list either iChat 6 or iChat 6.0.1 despite listing several Lion updates.

I started having this problem a few days ago. Google seach landed me here.

After randomly doing a few things, I happen to go to an AOL page, where I was greated with this message:

http://screencast.com/t/KxXFYDpxiv

"We have detected unusual activity on this account. For your security a temporary block has been placed on this account. To remove the temporary block you will need to verify your account and reset your password. Click 'Next' to continue.

If you are concerned about the validity of this notification, you can go back to the AOL Sign in page and click the 'forgot password' link to reset your password. For further assistance contact Member Services at 1-877-786-0722, Monday - Sunday between the hours of 8:00AM and 10:00 PM Eastern."

Seems as if we all need to reset our passwords. This can maybe happen if you have a smart phone in which you are logged in as well. I changed my password, and it all worked.

But I was "cookied," so the page might look different, since it autofilled my AIM SN.

If that link doesn't work, then just go to aol.com and just click "forgot password" to reset it. You'll be asked some security questions, but all should work.

So sad that the error message in iChat was not accurate and caused all this troubleshooting. :/

Can't log in with AIM name.
