Alternative to discontinued iWeb?

Oh yes, positive. iWeb is history. Where and when did you get the iMac? If you got the iMac right after Lion was released it could be an iMac that had Snow Leopard installed and Lion was installed over it keeping the iWeb and iDVD applications because they were there originally.

Do a search of this forum and you will see the hundreds of posts on this very topic.

New Macs do not ship with iWeb or iDVD any more - they come pre-installed with GarageBand, iPhoto and iMovie.

Apple has also stopped selling the iLife 11 boxed sets in their stores now too so the only way that you can get them is to purcahse from Amazon.

Actually if the iWeb hosting at apple is discontinued (and so far it has not been but it slated only to continue for a limited time) many of the advaced features that work on iweb will stop working. SO it is understandable for users to start looking at alternatives now as for many the switch will require some transition time to get all the features over to a new host. And it is best to start now just in cause becuase at the very least the outlook for iweb looks bleak with no future upgrades or fetures any site hosted on it is a dead end at best.

It is MobileMe that will be discontinued at the end of June this year and NOT iWeb. iWeb is an application and will continue to work as normal on your Mac even when MobileMe ceases to exist. Please get this distinction correct.

All you need to do is purchase a new hosting account and upload your site there without a problem.

As for things that won't work - there are lots of workarounds, such as third party hit counters that can be used instead. For blogs there are commenting systems such as Disqus and IntenseDebate or you can change your blog to WordPress instead and link to it from iWeb. All you have to do is insert the code into an html snippet and you are away.

That's what I was thinking - that just because Mobile Me is going, that has no effect on iWeb. I never used Mobile Me for email or my website. I love iWeb and I use Blue Host for my host and Easy iWeb Publisher which is a very nice and free FTP that works beautifully with iWeb. I am an artist and it is a full website, not a blog.

What I would like is if I sell my MacBook Air and get the new iPad 3, it isn't critical but it would be nice to update my website on it and not be restricted to my iMac for that so I thought I would start seeing if there is any way to do that on my iPad if I get one. I know there are CMS workarounds but I prefer the way iWeb works - any suggestions? As I said, I may do this anyway and just update my site on my iMac.

I don't have iWeb on my new macbook pro (with osx lion). I really want iWeb because i don't want to pay additional costs associated with webpage development. and I found iWeb really easy to use. unfortunately i dont have my old macbook which had iWeb installed.

Any suggestions?

I'd like expand the original question about seeking an alternative to the discontinued iWeb.

Background: While trying to publish a change to a web page, the process interminably hung up. The little "clock", indicating the progress of the publishing process, never moved. I had to quit the process midstream, find the files from a Carbon Copy Cloner backup (they are in the Application Support / iWeb folder), restore them and then republish the entire site, which took several hours. As one of several asides, I was unable to locate the iWeb files through Time Machine, and know of no way to restore a web page through Time Machine, but that is another subject. Bottom line - because of my lost faith in iWeb, and the lack of support for it, I feel the need to find an alternative.

I am very unhappy with Apple's abrupt discontinuation of several services and products: For me, the top four are iWeb, web hosting, iDisk and recently the Apple USB modem that I used for fax receiving, but those gripes are also another subject . . .

You need to face the fact that you will need to rebuild your website no matter what way you choose to do it.

On the bright side, you can copy and paste all the text from the published files and quickly paste it into the new version of your site.

The images wil be in the individual page folders and, along with other media, in the Media folder.

While you are doing this you can take the opportunity to check all your file names and remove spaces and/or special characters.

You can open your iWeb HTML files in an editor and make changes, but I can't think of any good reason for doing this.

If you have a number of existing pages that don't need updated, you can keep them as a separate sub site and link to and from it from the new site.

What were you looking for? The file you need is called Domain.sites or sites2 (iWeb 3) and is located in your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder.

NOTE:

In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

So if you are running Lion or Mt. Lion make the user library visible and look for your domain file in the appropriate iWeb folder.

Also the discontinuation was not abrupt. We were give over a years notice that iWeb and iDVD were being discontinued along with MobileMe.

Is it possible to locate the invisible Library folder while within Time Machine?

Try running that script in Terminal and go to the iWeb folder in the library. Then enter Time Machine and go back till you get a date with a domain file present.

Within Time Machine I found the "Domain.sites2" file, but it appears that the expected iWeb icon has been replaced by the contents of the web page I've been wrestling with!

[I just read about how to change the icon for a file, but I do not recall having gone through that process, even accidentally. Somehow the expected "iWeb file" icon has been replaced by a tiny version of one of the pages within my website.]

Could this corrupted/altered icon be related to my original problem of being unable to publish the modified page?

A domain file has the ability to show a preview of the last edited page.

As Wyodor has pointed out that's normal. All of my domain files show the first page of the first site in the domain file. Nothing to worry about.
