iPad 2 "Cannot connect to iTunes Store."

I have a new iPad 2 (32 gig non-3G) and when I try to download an app from the App Store it takes me to the home screen and displays "Cannot connect to iTunes Store." My internet connection is fine and my iOS (5.0.1) is up to date. iTunes and the App Store open and seem to be connected.

I have tried turning off and then turning on the iPad and it will sometimes allow me to download and install apps but not always. The same is true for reconnecting to the network.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks

iPad 2, iOS 5.0.1

Ok guys after a couple of days of stress and irritation because I was getting a "cannot connect to iTunes store" message. I finally found how to fix it. Apparently the reason I was getting this error was because my Apple ID was "too old". I originally set up my ID when you had the option of selecting "none" as a payment option. Make sure you go in the Settings> Store> See Apple ID and update that and but a debit/credit card. Also, make sure you update your password in the new format which has to be 8 digits long with a letter, capital letter etc..

I had this problem within a week of starting up my new iPad 2. I achieved maybe one successful connection out of every ten attempts to connect to the App Store.

What I didn't realize is that closing an application does not remove it from the list of multitasking programs. This is the row of icons that reveals itself at the bottom of the screen when you double-click the home button or swipe up using four or five fingers. It surprised me to see that all of the applications I ever opened were still multitasking.

I tapped and held my finger to one of the icons in the row until they all started to wiggle and had a minus ➖ sign next to them. I touched the minus sign on each icon until they were all gone.

Since that day, I always remove all programs from the multitasking list after closing them and never have difficulty connecting to the App Store.

PAPilot's suggestion fixed the problem i was having. Worked perfectly!

None of the other suggestions worked for me.

I was completely unaware that everything pretty much keeps running in the background all the time... What PAPilot suggested seems to be something that every iPad user should do all the time, whether or not you're having problems connecting to the iTunes store - it just makes sense to manage your iPad's resources that way... I wish the iPad would do that automatically, but since it doesn't, we'll all just have to do it manually, I guess... Thanks PAPilot for the info!

I'm glad to see my fix is working for other people. Being a lifelong PC user, I assumed programs were unloaded from execution when I closed them. Not so on the iPad, apparently. It would be very nice if Apple provided an option to do this automatically without having to deactivate each program individually. 😟

One other benefit I noticed from clearing the multitasking list is a substantial increase in battery life. Programs running in the background consume more power. For me, keeping multitasking cleared resulted in a 50 to 60 percent reduction in power use, compared to when all of my installed programs were running at once. My iPad is running cooler as well, as less power drain equals less heat.
