Just a word again,

The problem is bad in sound studios, where, it goes right thru the sound system at startup.

Of course, you can manage to find workarounds, but it still happens at restarts, when one forgets to reset the sound monitoring to off or the pro soundcard.

But also at home :

I am talking of experience; the worse one is when I wake up to work on my music at 6 in the morning and my wife is asleep...

Imagine the responsability of Apple in many couples relationships ;-)

Hi All,

I'm new to this forum and recently took delivery of my MBP 13, but haven't fired it up yet. The startup chime was one of my concerns too as I'll be using it at work and didn't want to bring unwanted attention to myself.

To answer falc0n's question, I would hazard a guess that to set the sound back to the default setting would be as follows:

sudo nvram -d SystemAudioVolume

The -d, I guess, stands for default.

Cheers,

Bal

No AlejDis55, this is not the point.

We are talking about the mac startup chime.

The famous string 5th chord with it's begenning cut, which use to be controlled only in the pref pane, and which is not anymore.

Try to plug your mac audio output to studio monitors and you will see what I mean. Better turn down the volume not to damage your ears.

Best regards

Startup sound is yet another reminder of how computer designers are dazzled by fripperies while blind to the real needs of users. A default silent startup with an optional (base level function) keypress to turn on the sound would make most sense (as disabling it altogether prevents using it to diagnose a fault). Thus silent startup (a) in a quiet office, (b) when the family are asleep, (c) without alerting thieves while outdoors, (d) on a train or plane, (e) in a library, (f) when the same volume level as in the environment you last shut down in is too loud, (g) you don't want everyone around staring at you, (h) when connected to public address in a studio or conference hall etc etc etc and keypress (a) to diagnose a fault or (b) to draw attention to yourself.

Just a complaint like some others. The startup sound is more than useless to me, as a pretty simple user. Have a MacBook Air running 10.8.5, and I have no idea whatsoever what Mountain Lion is... "About This Mac" doesn't have the machine model number..... "13-inch, Mid 2013" .... but I bought the machine in June 2013.

I find this startup gong very annoying, as the noise is loud and sounded twice tonight when I was suggested to do an update, and my dear wife did sit right up in bed when the sound comes on, and I'm in another room. Also, it sounds suspiciously like such a sound I had old PC's back in the 80's. Back when we had 8-Tracks and Cassettes, and I had long hair.

I agree that it is indeed time to give another /visual if my machine is dorked-up. Hey, it cost $2,000.00. Please folks help me figure out how to reliably silence the noise forever. Plugging in the phones doesn't do shut the blasty-gong either, and inexplicably you can't hear it through the earphones.

P.S. Scared to use that little Pane program, which worked fine on my MacBook back in '06 or thereabouts.
