Thanks for your suggestion, however does this workaround also prevent the startup sound when it might be needed to diagnose a problem? When I start up my car various warning symbols light up and perhaps a discreet beep or two inaudible to anyone outside the car; the Mac equivalent is the horn going off for 1 second every time I start up. Ironic that IT is still stuck in the blinkered days when Bill Gates provoked the 'General Motors' responses to his clumsy comparison of the two industries.

I took someone's advice.... sorry I ADD'D on who I owe a thanks to.

StartNinja free download. Only took a second and works flawlessly.

If it's full of malwarre that's just fine with me.

Mid-2013 Air using 10.9.2.

Now I don't have the gong any more. I have attained Nirvana.

Don't care if gong is used to troubleshoot. Am counting on whoever fixes my Mac in the future can find other ways to make my machine work - than to hear the gong.

Life is good. Now I can die an old but happy man.

Thanks!!!

I had the same problem with my iMac, but I didn't really care because it used to be in an office at home. When I got my MacBook Air and I was moving a lot in my house, especially at night, the problem came up!

So the answe to your question is this:

TURN ON THE MAC NORMALLY BUT PRESSING THE MUTE BUTTON AT THE SAME TIME!

(Power Button + Mute Button - simultaneously)

It works great in my MacBook Air Mid-2013!

There is another way, which is pretty much going to setting an touching many buttons that are going to take off the sound permanently. Nonetheless, I personally do not recommend it because the "Noise" it makes has something to do with the way the computer works. You can still press the mute button while you press the power button simultaneously and it is safe to go!

I hope it helped!

Power + Mute is inconvenient. I don't want to sit with the computer while it boots up. I don't want to have to remember an extra key to press. If I forget to press it, the chime can be really irritating or obtrusive. A silent start up with an option to enable the chime with a keypress (eg to diagnose a fault) - now that would be genuinely useful. The default startup chime is the design-flaw equivalent of the horn going off whenever I start my car.

In response to ssls6 back in 2012.

Yep, thats true BUT its so unnecessarily load, and its embarrasing when booting the MBP at meetings etc.

There needs to be a way to reduce the volume.

I dont even use OSX, but boot straight to win7. The WIn7 startup chime is low volume, but the OSX/bootcamp chime is like a church bell!

Is the chime file stored on the EFI partition or in bios?

"Just press the mute button before you shut down" - er, no. The point made earlier is that it's the designer's job to build in solutions, not to give the consumer extra work to compensate for inadequate performance. What if I forgot to press 'mute', or didn't expect to be somewhere quiet when I next booted up, or got called away and had to shut down really quick, or lent the device to someone who didn't know the trick, or pressed 'mute' too late in the shut-down sequence, or found it tedious to have to un-mute every time I wanted media sound after booting up, etc etc. Once again, the Mac BONNGGG!! is the design flaw equivalent of the horn going off every time I start my car.
