can i play bbc iplayer through apple tv?

Not directly, but you can send BBC iPlayer etc to the Apple TV via mirroring if you have an iPad 2 or iPhone 4s.

If you have the latest iPlayer app it can stream from any iPhone or iPad, not just ones that support mirroring, you have to start the iPlayer app then double click the home button and swipe across untill you see the airplay icon and switch it to apple TV then go back to iPlayer and choose smething to watch

That's mirroring, only the iPad 2 and iPhone 4s currently support mirroring.

Something doesn't add up there.

BBC iPlayer is up to date (1.3.22) on two iPads and two iPhones that I have access to at the moment, and works over AirPlay on none of them, despite all devices working with AirPlay on other apps that are enabled. Now I know it's possible it's just a freak situation, but I find that a little hard to believe.

I note the blurb on iTunes says it works with AirPlay, but it could simply mean AirPlay mirroring.

What adds up even less is that Mr. Neal refers to double tapping the home button etc etc, which we both know is mirroring and isn't available on the iPhone 4.

Yes, it does seem very strange and I tended to believe it was mirroring until I saw the bit in the description (which is a bit vague actually). I have just downloaded the app and will test it out.

It isn't using mirroring which you are right isn't available on iPhone 4. It uses AirPlay in the same way that you can stream any safari video to your apple tv using the same method, this works because apps like safari and bbc iplayer have been updated to include AirPlay support directly, it's just that the air play button is in the app switching dock not in the app, try it for yourself find any website on safari on your iPhone 4 and you can steam it to your tv same as iplayer app can

Tried it several times on the iPhone 4, it's no go, works fine on the iPad 2, but that's because it supports mirroring.

Tapping twice on the homescreen button, swiping and selecting the AirPlay button IS mirroring.

I'm sorry but you are wrong, it is mirroring on devices that support mirroring but it just airplay on other devices, the same way it can just send audio via using that airplay button. Mirroring will send whatever it on your iPad 2 to the apple TV but it will keep the aspect ratio of the iPad, apps that support airplay will not use mirroring and will fit the aspect ratio of the TV

Yes the BBC iPlayer works full screen and switches the mirroring switch to off when viewed on the iPad 2 or iPhone 4s after tapping the homescreen twice and swiping, however you can't tap the homescreen button twice and swipe to reveal the AirPlay icon on the iPhone 4, or at least I haven't been able to do on several devices.

I watched BBC news on my iPhone 4 airplay streaming to my ATV last night

The icon only appears in the multitasking dock when it can find the apple TV, it disappears when you are not on the same network as the ATV.

BBC news is not BBC iPlayer.

I know, the AirPlay icon disappears when it doesn't detect the Apple TV, the point being mine does detect the Apple TV for every other app.

You may well be right, but it isn't happening for me, I could accept that it's just a glitch if the results weren't so repeatable.

I have the original iPad and I can send content to my Apple TV from the BBC iPlayer app as described by Kevin.

I think I see where you a going wrong, your screen shot is showing the wrong bit of the multitasking bar, you need to swipe across again to get to the volume and AirPlay icon
