iTunes Get Artwork: "Artwork for [album name] cannot be found. You do not have permission to access the requested resource."

I just installed iTunes 10.5 (latest version as of 11 Jan 2012), onto a computer running Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I loaded my music library into it, it compiled the list and separated them by album. But even though I'd assigned most of the albums artwork through my Zune management software (a Microsoft product), almost none of them populated into iTunes. So I went through and started asking the software to try to find album artwork where possible.

I did this a few times album by album, then I decided to select multiple albums and see what happened. No problems. Then I selected all of the albums I had--about 600 in all--and asked it to get artwork. It seemed to process for a bit, then came back with the error, "Artwork for [album name] could not be located. You do not have permission to access the requested resource." I tried this on several individual albums, only to receive that same error.

The very first time I did it, I was told I needed an account with the iTunes store to make it work, so I signed in using an old Apple ID (the account had been inactive for so long it had been locked for security, I unlocked it and that seemed to be that). Then I did what I described above.

The weird thing--to me--is that I can still add artwork to the albums manually if I want to, from imagery stored locally on my own computer. The only thing it seems to have a problem with is when I ask it to go find artwork from the iTunes store.

Do I need to uninstall iTunes and then reinstall it? Did something go wrong with the process of authorizing the computer to work with the iTunes store? Do I need to de-authorize and then re-authorize the computer? Could this be something related to Windows permissions on the iTunes library?

Wanted to post that this issue still continues. iTunes doesn't find artwork, but apparently as others have pointed out only for new CDs. Today I imported two CDs, one from 2015 and one from 2014. It found the artwork for the 2014 CD no problem. The 2015 artwork could not be found, even though of course it should have been. I wonder when does a CD become "old enough" for iTunes to find the artwork? Or will the artwork for anything from 2015 forward never be found. And more importantly when with Apple fix this? Its gone on for half a year at least.

Me again. I wonder if Apple finally did something related to this as iTunes found the artwork for two 2015 CDs I imported today. Perhaps they are now "old enough" that the glitch doesn't effect them. Will have to see if artwork for a 2016 CD is found to finally say this issue is resolved.

Adding artwork to iTunes can be a bit of a hit and miss. There are several factors to take into account, which I'm sure you are well aware of. However, to make this as short as possible, the country where you are signed in to on iTunes is the biggest factor. iTunes removes items from different stores all the time, and sometimes never has them in that country in the first place. Some singles are only available from the albums as individual tracks.

It was stated in an earlier thread that it is possible to get artwork direct from iTunes using https://bendodson.com/projects/itunes-artwork-finder/index.html

The trick with this is to Google the track in question and click on images e.g. I will use American Dream single MKTO the artwork and single are only available in one country...

Then you select google images tab and look for the thumbnail with the iTunes address 🙂

Scroll to the bottom of the page the image is on and you will find the country the album art is available in.

Finding artwork really shouldn't be hit or miss and I have "learned" how to make it work but iTunes was definitely broken for a while when it came to finding artwork, with new CDs for sure being missed. It appears they may have resolved this issue but of course time will tell.

When iTunes does find the artwork for a CD what I do is copy what they find by going to Get Info>Artwork, highlighting the artwork by clicking and using ctrl+C. I then clear the downloaded artwork for the CD and paste in what I coped via Get Info>Artwork, clicking on the blank center and using ctrl+V. This slightly convoluted method of copying and pasting was made necessary in iTunes 12 (or maybe 11), previously you could just right click to copy and paste. I like to have the artwork attached to the song files. It really doesn't take up much additional space and the artwork is forever with the song.
