How can I just import my jpeg (not raw) to my iPad?

You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.

Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov).

Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import.

Or, you can email it to yourself, open and save in Pad (not a good suggestion for importing a lot of pictures 🙂)

I think we missed his point. I think he knows how to import from a camera, but only wants the jpg images, not the RAW images. I dont' t know. Does anybody with a camera and the connection kit know?

As far as I can tell there is no way to do this.

It seems like when you connect to the iPad you should be given the choice to import the JPEG only and disregard the RAW. The funny thing is that if you import RAW+JPEG the iPad completely ignores the RAW file and does not allow any app access to it. If you import RAW only then the iPad creates a JPEG when you open it in any app. Either way it does nothing with the RAW but store it on the iPad. I can see how some might want to store these files but for many of us it would be useful to be able to delete it without having to connect to a computer.

Does anyone know how to put in a feature request for Apple? This should be a pretty easy feature for them to code in.

You may have a look at the Eye-Fi cards.

http://www.eye.fi I think you can specify to only copy jpg files to the iPad, but they are only 8GB max... so the RAW files would fill up the cards eventually. Anyways, it is a nice way to copy over the photos.

Thanks for the suggestion. That is actually what I have been doing. Unfortunately the Eye-Fi app is pretty flaky and does not always reliably upload to my ipad. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. The other things I dont like about this solution is the eyefi app dumps the images into my camera roll instead of a separate import folder like the camera connection kit does. It is also very slow and really tough on the camera batteries.

Hopefully Apple will add the ability to import JPEG's only and all will be well in the world.

After much thought I figured out a work around. Its a little convoluted but it will work.

All you do is import your JPEG+RAW images using the camera connection kit, then open the "imported" Album in iphoto on the ipad. You can then choose to copy them to the camera roll. Now go back into the photos app and delete all the photos from your "imported" Album. It will say that it is going to delete them everywhere but really it doesnt because it leaves the JPEG in the camera roll. The result is that you will only have your JPEGs that you imported in your camera roll and the RAW images get deleted.

The only thing I cant figure out is how to select multiple images in iphoto to be copied to the camera roll which means you need to do them one by one. There must be something I am missing in iphoto but I really just started using it the other day.

Regarless I have figured out a way to upload your RAW+JPEG images from your camera and only keep the JPEG's without having to connect to a computer.

I should also mention that this will work if you import RAW only images but the JPEG created by iphoto is pretty small and not retina quailty. Therefore I recommened you shoot in RAW+JPEG if using the workflow.

The Eye-Fi card is an SD card. The OP's 5DMkII takes only CF cards, and an SD to CF adaptor won't work with the Eye-Fi card (I know because I tried).

What the OP should do is upgrade his camera to a 5DMk3. This camera has two card slots, one for CF and one for SD. He can install a CF card in the CF card slot to record the RAW images, and an Eye-Fi card in the SD card slot for collectng JPGS. The wifi in the Eye-Fi card can download the JPGs to the iPad as they are collected.

I would like to know this as well. The camera connection works great to allow viewing of my photos while in the field or car riding home, but I do not want to copy both NEF and JPG over to have them taking up space on iPad. There has to be a way to copy only JPG... and it would make the transfer quicker too!
