Can't send aol mail from my iphone but can receive it. Help!

My iphone 4S was working this morning and I could send emails from my aol account, but all of a sudden, then next email I tried to send wouldn't send and I got an error message that said: Cannot Send Mail. The user name or password for "SMTP:xxxx@aol.com@smtp.aol.com" is incorrect. How can I fix this? I've tried turning it on airplane mode and off, deleting the aol account and adding it back on, doing a hard reset on the phone, but nothing has worked. Can someone help me? I"m receiving emails just fine, just no sending.

I am having the exact same issue. I went to AT&T first and they couldn't find anything wrong with the phone. They deleted my AOL acount but it still didn't work. I can receive messages but I can't send any. They told me it was an AOL problem. Then I went to the Apple store and they tried everything too and couldn't halp me. The guy there said it was AOL. I thought it was my phone. They said to wait 24-48 hours.

Just called AOL and they are aware of the problem and are working on it. It is strange because I can not send email from my primary user name, but I can send from a secondary user name. I have an iPhone 3GS, 4S, and an iPad, use both ATT & Verizon and have a mix of ios 5 and ios 4, and in all cases I cannot send from the primary user name account only.

I had the same problem today. Thought it was just me. Glad to know that it is an AOL issue. Gmail and Roadrunner are sending out fine. I pay for aol, but I've never gotten off the phone with them without it lasting at least 3 hours and without a solution, so I guess I'll pass on calling them and just wait until they resolve it.

I have been having same issues in the UK tried all sorts and then found that I had to change the AOL setup on the Iphone and Ipad2 to allow sending - basically under email accounts I had to add my aol username and password under outgoing and incoming servers this is the username of aol without the @aol.com added once this was done it sends now fine, as before only recieved - i think AOL have change some server settings. hope this helps.

My wife encountered the same problem today. We both have an iPhone 4S. We both have AOL accounts, but my email continued to work and hers did not. After a thorough comparison of our settings, I could not find anything wrong. However, I was able to "fix" the problem by doing the following. Go to the "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" settings panel under "Settings." Click on the "AOL" account. Click on "Account". Under "Outgoing Mail Server" click on "SMTP". Under "Primary Server" it says "smtp.aol.com" and is probably set to "On". Change this setting to "Off". Then click on "Add Server..." under "Other SMTP Servers". Add "smtp.aol.com" as the Host Name, Your AOL account as the user name (without "@aol.com"), and your AOL password. Your outgoing mail should now work. I believe the problem is that on my wife's phone, "@aol.com" is somehow getting added to the sendmail request under the default settings for the Primary SMTP server. This bypasses that problem. Best of luck...
