replacing "ditto" utility

I'm having trouble installing PhotoShop Elements 10 on my 27"iMac. The installer fails to initialise. I'm in contact with the support staff of Adobe, and we seem to be narrowing the problem down. The exact same issue is described in this thread in the Adobe forum:

The guy that had the problem apparently figured it out by "replacing the ditto utility" (see screenshot),

but doesn't elaborate on what he did. Anyone on here has any idea on what he did and how I should replicate the action? I could wait for the Adobe team to get back to me, but I figured let's be a bit more pro-active...

Well that does indeed seem to confirm your problem. But one last try using full pathnames this time.

/usr/bin/touch ~/Desktop/a; /usr/bin/ditto ~/Desktop/a ~/Desktop/b; ls ~/Desktop/b

Also do the other command Linc suggested,

codesign -vv /usr/bin/ditto

part 1:

the file "a" is still there, and Finder says it's been edited on the exact minute I ran that command. Nothing really changed about it, but still no "b" showing up, either.

Part 2:

Not sure what I should be looking for as a result of this one, though...

You have a damaged Mac OS installation. Back up all data, then boot from your recovery partition (command-R at startup) and reinstall Lion. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong.

Not running Lion but Snow Leopard, but I'm assuming that makes no difference vis a vis this situation. Got a Time Capsule running, so I'm safe. Many thanks to you and all the other guys that chipped in, I'll let you know how it goes...

Only in that you boot from your installation disc instead of the recovery partition.

Yup, as Linc Davis said something is wrong with your system more than just ditto because there would have been a few lines displayed by the codesign. The fact that it isn't working either is a pretty good indication not all is right with your system. Hence the reinstall suggest rather then trying to figure out how extensive the damage is.

Ah, but the details are sketchy to me. Basically I repeated the actions I was told to do on here, and Linc and X interpreted the results.

Anyway, when the problem was determined by Linc, I re-installed Snow Leopard from the install dic, and everything worked peachy after that.
