What happens if I choose Reset All Settings?

My iPhone is giving this popup that says: "Unable to Purchase: 'The Simpsons Arcade FREE' and 1 other item could not be purchased at this time. Please try again later." frequently when I try to update or install any app. (The app installs fine though.) Apple Care suggested I choose Reset All Settings to get rid of the problem. My question is, what exactly happens? Do settings and preferences in the apps get deleted too, or just system settings?

What do you mean by all settings will be gone but app remains? What settings? My voice text will work one minute and next it will not. If I restart phone it will work again. Told by Apple to try the reset but scared I will lose stuff.

If you have forgotten the Restrictions passcode, you have two options:

1. Keep trying different passcodes to see if you can figure out what it is

2. Erase the device, and restore it from a backup that was done before the Restrictions passcode was set, or set it up as a new device manually if you do not have a backup that was done prior

Nothing else will remove the Restrictions passcode.

Best of luck,

PS: I need this because my iPhone 5 battery indicator will instantly drop from 87% to 1%, then as soon as I connect to power, it jumps back to 62% (+/-)... One post said that if I "Reset ALL", this issue will be corrected, but I am skeptical, and I would like to understand what I would need to restore before I try "Reset ALL".

Thank you!

The list would vary depending on which Settings a particular person had changed for their preferences. Reset all Settings, means that any Setting that you have set will have to be re-set, because all Settings are going to be put back to the default setting. You would just go to Settings, and check each item on the list.

And BTW, there is no "Reset All". There is "Reset All Settings" and "Reset All Content & Settings". The latter will basically erase your device.

Have you tried just resetting the device: Hold down the Home & Power buttons (or Volume Down and Power buttons for an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus) and continue to hold them down until the Apple appears (up to 30 seconds). Once the Lock Screen displays see if the issue is resolved.

If you have an iPhone 8, the reset is done as follows:

1. Press down and quickly release the Volume Up button

2. Press down and quickly release the Volume Down button

3. Now pass and hold the side Power button, continue holding until you see the Apple logo  on screen

Thank you for the follow-up...

FYI, my phone is an iPhone 5...

and, YES, I understand that there is an option to "Reset All Settings" (I just abbreviated it as "Reset All")...

My inquiry was to find a 'list' of each of the settings that would be reset, so I can capture my existing settings and create a guide so I can restore my original settings... I am sure you understand that "ALL" is not specific enough to accomplish this (because there will always be one of more settings that elude you)...

and, YES, I have held down the Home & Power buttons and continued to hold them down until the Apple appears... This has not resolved the battery power issue (BTW, if I do nothing, the iPhone does indeed 'die' when the battery indicator drops below 1%, EVEN though if I 'had reconnected power at 1%, it always jumps to > 55%) -- this indicates that there is an issue with the INDICATOR, BUT the system shuts down when the INDICATOR goes to zero, even if the internal power is really at > 30%...

I saw a suggested 'solution' to this battery indication issue that said: "the iPhone needed to have it's settings reset". My question is: "What settings do I need to capture BEFORE a reset, so I have a reference to restore my original settings."

What can't Apple publish a list of settings that are 'touched' by the "Reset All Settings" option? Why is this list not documented? Are the users supposed to GUESS? ==> Not a great way to document how the system works.

This is really a SIMPLE question, so why isn't there a straightforward answer???

Again, there is no list because the list is every possible setting you see when you click on the Settings icon. The only setting that is on the initial screen is "Airplane Mode". Every other item you see listed on that first screen has an arrow next to the entry. When you click on the arrow, you may then see a screen with several buttons, or you may see additional entries with arrows.

Each and every one of those entries eventually will land on a screen where you are signing in or turning something off or on. Each and every one of those will be reset to the default, and whichever ones you changed when you first set up the phone would have to be changed again. Only you can make the list of what those are. If you don't know, then just go to each and every entry and drill down until you get to the final screen for that setting, then determine if you want to change it.

So, every single one of them is potentially "touched" when you Reset All Settings. Depends on whether you changed what it was initially defaulted to or not.

There are many functions (the latest IOS added 200 new features) in the iPhone so it will take very long to troubleshoot one at a time. You can try reset which does not delete any settings:

Do a reset (Hold Sleep/Wake and Home buttons about 10 secs or more till Apple logo appears)

and see if that helps.

What happens if I choose Reset All Settings?
