How to remotely access Time Capsule using iCloud and firmware 7.6.1?

I have just applied the new Time Capsule 7.6.1 firmware that supposedly enables remote access to the drive via iCloud. However, how precise would this work?

I have read several other threads here and elsewhere but they either explain how to do this using MobileMe or DynDNS.

How precisely does iCloud now translate my internal IP to an external one and where do I access my drive in OSX when on the road?

I found this instruction posted somewhere, which is ommitted in Apple's Help and this forum (as far as I reckon.... no offense if I missed someone's post) - and solved my own question:

* Once you setup everything and you are trying to access through Internet, almost inevitable you MUST go to Finder -> Go -> Connect to Server and type afp://190. etc acording to the IP address of your TC

** You cant get the TC IP Adreess (PREVIOUSLY!) from AirPort Utility while at the "home" network and clicking on the TimeCapsule icon: a pop-up window will show IP Adress: 190.xxx.xx.xxx

Hope this helps. It took me a while to figure out this last, simple step....

Freddy,

Thanks for your help.

What you are describing is the way to access TC locally (ie.within your local network).

If outside the local network, using the 192.x.x.x address does not (and should not..) connect.

Using the external IP (from whatismyip.com) 60.x.x.x does not work either.

As it turns out the problem is not with my setup but rather with the external network.

I have just switched to my iphone's hotspot and TC was immediately accessible.

Switching to my work network (wired ethernet) drops the connection.

Must be a work firewall here I suppose.

Here is my setup to connect to my time capsule from internet.

1. Router With UPnP Forwarding enabled. (with 192.168.1.xx)

2. Time capsule signup for BTMM connected behind the router with its own subnet. ("Double Nat" error ignored) - (with 192.168.2.xx)

3. Sign up icloud on my macbook. (same account as time capsule BTMM)

My macbook can access my time capsule via internet (in Finder under shared) anywhere.

So i believe as long as the router facing the internet is setup to enable UPnP Forwarding, time capsule can be reached even without bridge mode.

I have finally figured out how to get this to work. All of the initial steps are simple to follow. One additional thing to note is to enable file sharing on your Mac. When you go to Bac to Mac, it should have a warning sign indicating you should enable file sharing. I did not need to use any IP addresses are anything complicated.

Rather than using 'command + K', which brings up connect prompt for afp:// and entering your ip address or Time Capsule name, you can open finder window and click on Go > Network (the shortcut is command + K but it opens in a different format). Provided your Time Capsule is mounted, go to the top right corner and "connect as.." Here, you will enter the password of your Time Capsule and it will connect.

I have just realised while checking that command + K and "browse" should do the same thing.

This should be your final step.

I am currently beside my TC but connected to internet on a different network and can connect to it. Hopefully it will still work when i travel half way round the world 🙂

I'm running the latest version of all either OSX Lion and AirPort Utility.

I want to use my time capsule as cloud storage from anywhere I might be.

How am I supposed to do that when it is so complicated now???

The thing is: I connected my TC to my Router which has the IP address starting with 192.168.0.1 but if I go over whatsmyip.com it shows a different address... How does that affect me?

I really need it to drop dropbox and email servers from my life.

Also my Back To My Mac says that I should turn off NAT and DCHP on one of the devices and retry. I only have macbook, iphone and time capsule with me. Nothing else.

Thanks!!!

Whatismyip is the public IP of the connection.. that is the only IP that is relevant to remote access.

The IP of the router being 192.168.0.1 is local LAN private IP address so you can use that single public IP to have multiple devices on the internet.. that is what we are all stuck with until you get fully working ipv6 systems.

If BTMM says to turn off the dhcp and NAT you must have only one router.. that means either bridge the modem and use the TC as the main router.. or keep using the modem as the router and bridge the TC.. although in this case it seems BTMM will not work. You can however still get access to a bridged TC directly via AFP connection. Just read the method .. remote access Time Capsule is a common search and has loads of tutorials and you tube videos which will show the method. Here is simple one I have used.

Qida, thank you very much!

Just a quick remark regarding each one of the three items you have pointed out:

1. I understood that I must go check the configuration of my router through the 192.168.1.0 adress and tick the checkbox (if that's how it is) to enable the "UPnP Port Forwarding", right?

2. So you assume that my TC should follow my LAN IP address. It does. Router Mode as DHCP and NAT is a router configuration or is a time capsule configuration (through AirPort Utility)?

3. Done. I have added my apple account (not @icloud.com but @gmail.com which I buy stuff from iTunes and AppStore) on the bottom where you can do that.

Best regards, my friend.

Worked now!!!

Thanks.

Ok, now how am I supposed to access my time capsule and throw files there? I just go on safari and insert my time capsule IP address? How do I do that?

Best regards

Np. The TC should appear in the Finder under shared section on the left. Click it, enter appleID/TC user/password, select the correct TC volume and mount it as a drive. Then just use normally drag and drop files in Finder.

The drive is mounted with BTMM in the format of : afp:/<time_capsule_name>._afpovertcp._tcp.<memberID>.members.btmm.icloud.com/<TC _volume_Name> , so basically its using AFP..

No need safari, not sure how to.

To automatically connect to your TC upon reboot of your Mac

Do the following:

System Preferences -> Users & Groups -> Select your login user -> Click Login Items tab -> Click the "+" symbol -> Navigate to the TC in the shared section -> select the volume

And next time your Mac reboots, it will automatically try to connect to TC.

Ok I'm having real trouble accessing my time capsule remotely. My setup:

1: D-Link cable modem/router from ISP - running 802.11a/b/g network named 'net'

2: Airport Express connects to this to have a 802.11g only wireless network named 'net2'

3: Time capsule extending the net2 network - local IP 192.168.0.102.

Running MacOs 10.7.5 with airport utility 6.3.1, all firmware updated. My MBP is on icloud with back to my mac enable, and I have confirmed my details on the time capsule are fine with 'back to my mac' i.e. I have the green dot, and file sharing is enabled.

I have setup a dyndns.org address for my network (eg mynetwork.dyndns.org), and have forwarded port 8201 to 478 on my TC. I cannot seem to connect this, either through the finder window, not through 'connect to server' where I put in "mynetwork.dyndns.org" or mynetwork.dyndns.org:8201.

Any help? Or do I just have to live with no remote access? I have googled but all the details are coming up for older versions of Airport Utility that I no longer have. I tried downloading 5.3 but it had the option to access disk using bonjour, nothing about WAN.

Thanks in advance,

Saqib.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes external network testing as using phone's 3G as my modem so external network. I am not bridging the TC at all - it is extended the AE network which is different than the cable modem's wireless network (I keep the AE and TC network g only as have slower devices on cable's network). It doesn't do any dhcp assignments etc as the AE does that. My dyndns setup works fine for two internet cameras using different port numbers so I know it's working.

I used a random port 8201 to 548 (my bad mistyped previously) i.e. mynetwork.dyndns.org:8201 directs to TC 192.168.0.102:548 - I thought that was what AFP used? When you say port forwarding vs translate, what do you mean?

Hello guys.

Any help?

I am trying to access remotely my TC and my flash drive which is connected to my TC (at home). First of all questions - Is it possible access my flash drive remotely? If so, what I am missing.?.. Ive already checked the setup and seems right to me... When Im in the office, I can see TC and the flash drive in Finder. But I cant access them.

Sometimes TC worked when I clicked "connected as" buy few minutes later I get disconnected. There is a message

"There was a problem connecting to the server Time Capsule ***My name***. The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time... Check the server name or IP addres.... ..... ..... ....

I deffinitely cant acces data from my flash drive although I can see its folder...

Anyone can help?

Other message I can see in the finder window

No configured air port base station have been found. Airport utility will continue serching...Remote airport base stations may be available in the other wifi device menu.
