@Harlan Johnson

I am with you on this. I do not want to buy an app to fix an OS issue that should not be there in the first place.

VLC can go to 200% gain (about 130~150% makes most movies pleasantly audiable). Very often maxing out iTunes, Netflix or Youtube plus the onboard volume control is not sufficiet for comfortable listening without straining to hear what is being said. There is nothing wrong with the speaker hardware and clearly no danger of hearing damage or speaker damage at 100% or even 200% of standard gain in the modern macbook pro. The OS gain levels are just too **** low.

I tried Boom and it coincided with (probably caused) the sound settings hanging (no sound from internal speakers at all, system stuck trying to route sound to "digital out"). Boom is unacceptable.

APPLE !!!!! I / We need a sudo command or some such that permits greater amp gain for internal speakers or a OS update that does the same thing. Perhaps unlocking Audiio Midi Setup to allow a positive number to be entered in the box next to the gain for internal speakers output. I don't care if I have to click a check box to sign off on the possibility of straining onboard hardware. I just want it to work.

Thanks. (urgently)

This is free and it works:

It is still a workaround.

From what I can understand, there is a limitation on output defined somehow in System/Library/Extensions/appleHDA.kext

There are various descriptions of how to edit the info.plist files of some parts of the package contents but something has changed since Moutain Lion such that those instructions are no longer relevant. It woud be great if someone could shed some light on how to edit a .plist file to simply give the volume control more headroom.

I am quite deaf, 77 and wear two hearing aids. When I watch anything, I take out the hearing aids and put in Bose earbuds but still strain to catch a lot of the words. I thought that was my problem with the Pro until I searched for something to increase the volume on this machine and took the 7 day free trial with Boom. The first episode of Game of Thrones season 4 went straight over my head without Boom. The second episode with Boom? Absolutely effing magic! Now I am going to try Hear. Thanks for this thread.

A nice solution is to download Soundflower which works as a virtual audio cable. I use it with AULab, which I believe comes preinstalled on most (all?) macs. Set your sound output to Soundflower in system preferences and then open up AULab and set the input to Soundflower and the output to the built in output. You can now raise the fader in AULab for more volume or use various effects and equalisers including various free AU downloads off the net.

I had the same problem. The sound suddenly went faint. I tried all the above recommendations which improved the volume only a little. I eventually discovered that I had accidentally moved the slider (in iTunes). This slider is immediately to the right of the fast forward symbol on the top of the window and looks as though it has something to do with the speed, but it turns out that it is the volume and seems to be separate from the volume control in the finder or the preferences. Hope your problem is as simply solved.

This is a picture of the front left and right speakers, and subwoofer(Yes for the MacBook pro. Even my 2012 MacBook has some kick-apple 😉 bass. SO, don't listen to "Matt" or "Leslie" just because they know how to talk proper, and use commas, and periods. Dissing on the MacBook speakers, just download the application "Boom", and its an overall EQ for your Mac. The suggestion someone else mentioned, you had to be an Apple Developer. AND BOOM! Problem solved! 😉 Email me @ Isaacsanders567@gmail.com for any questions about the Application Boom.User uploaded file
