How do I remove an indent in a pages document?

How do I remove an indent in a pages document?

I have typed a list in my document, and then pressed 'return' twice and started typing a new paragraph. However, the new paragraph is now indented like the list. I can't seem to remove the indent.

Any suggestions?

Well I had this problem just yesterday, and I googled it and this is the page it brought me too. So if it were to do that for any other person they would also be reading out of date information.

I found a similar question and added what to do there... which is something that could be done here too.

I clicked on 'Format' (top right) then 'layout' and went to indents and made sure that the 'first' and 'left' were both 0

To remove or change the indent in a Pages document:

1. Tap somewhere within the document as if you are about to type something (a flashing blue line should appear to show you where your next words typed will appear, in the picture mine is after the letter d).

2. Look at the top of the Pages document. Find the ruler, which should be located underneath where the document title (In the picture it is "Demo") and settings (where it has the paintbrush, plus sign, and 3 dots) are displayed.

3. In this picture, there are 2 orange triangles on the bottom of the ruler and one orange rectangle at the top of the ruler. The triangles show where your margins are, and the rectangle is where the (automatic) indent is.

4. Click and drag the rectangle directly on top of the left most triangle to bring the indent all the way back. (In my picture, the rectangle is already directly on top of the triangle at 1 inch, so, as you can see, my words are not indented).

I hope that's helpful! Good luck!

Hi lovetolearn,

Thanks for your contribution.

Unfortunately, you've posted information that is accurate for the iOS version of Pages, which runs on iPad (and other iOS devices).

The original question (and this community, as implied by the community name displayed near the top of the screen) concerns using Pages for Mac—an entirely different application, which runs in OS X or macOS—and for which the user interface is somewhat different.

While there are similarities in the Ruler and other parts of the top-of-window display, there are also significant differences, as can be seen here:

I'm finding this very annoying too,

although to be honest I have only spent about 15 minutes trying to get a fix,

but any advice is appreciated.

Peter:
I am not hitting Tab,

and Shift Tab does nothing to push the indent back.

It just seems to keep creating automatic indented lists everytime I use the "-" at the beginning of a sentence.

This should not be automatic by default. I should have the ability to switch automatic on.

I found the fix :
Top right of toolbar, second row of toolbar, just above the ruler,

select the little icon with horizontal lines.

It will give you some options for what kind of lists you would like.

Select the text you want to remove the indents from , and select the option for "none" from the little icon mentioned above.

Also , in preferences --> auto-correction,

deselect "automatically detect lists"

Both of these things seem to stop Pages automatically creating indented lists.

HI Rhys,

This question was asked in 2012, and likely pertains to Pages '09 (Pages 4), where the List button was one of the 'additional' buttons that could be added to customize the Toolbar.

In Pages 5 (and probably 6), the List controls are part of the Format > Styles Inspector, found near the bottom of the Styles panel in the right sidebar.

"Well I had this problem just yesterday, and I googled it and this is the page it brought me too. So if it were to do that for any other person they would also be reading out of date information."

So complain to Google for not returning precise enough search results. You did, of course, specify in your search which version of Pages you wanted a solution to apply to. (Not that doing so would narrow the results significantly.)

The information in this thread is 'out of date' only if you're using a newer version of Pages. For someone who decided that the current version, missing over 100 features present in pages '09, isn't the best choice to fill their needs, the information is quite current.

"I found a similar question and added what to do there..."

Good. Now someone using a newer version and searching a similar question may find your answer and find it useful.

"which is something that could be done here too."

And you've now done that.

"I clicked on 'Format' (top right) then 'layout' and went to indents and made sure that the 'first' and 'left' were both 0"

Hmmm.. This instruction seems to apply to paragraphs containing more than a single line. The original question concerned automatic indenting of lists—not first line indenting of paragraphs. Does your response address lists as well?

The regulars here just try to make sure that the answers are neither random nor irrelevant.

The original poster and the person who jumped in both misunderstood the problem and were not listening and now you have done the same only 5 years too late and for the wrong, and very different version, of the software.

As you have pointed out Google located this page, using whatever query you wrote. Somebody else may do the same and we try and keep the answers on the ball, but can't and don't go hunting out old and out of date advice. The answers still apply to anyone still using Pages '09 or '08 anyway.

Barry replied to your post and when he pointed out that the question is old, you started arguing. Something apparently you are not in favour of.

No amount of search parameter refinement will address the lost comprehension, that a five year old post, is not addressing Pages v5 or later issues. Or resolve, that the newer applications have a Help menu, from where one can discover an online manual that offers a Format Documents : Tabs and text alignment Help panel.
