Tried doing the update on a 2009 MBP (silver keyboard) with 4gig RAM. It was running fine with 10.7.2, but after the udate was finished, I clicked the restart button, the screen went balck and... no chime after minutes.

So I shut down holding the power button for a few seconds. No when I try to start it, the white light goes on (on the lid button) but the screen stays black and there is no chime button.

I've tried resetting PMU, PRAM SMC. Tried booting in safe mode, same problem.

Tried booting through another Mac and another external HD. Nada.

So I tried putting my Lion DVD and now it's stuck (won't eject holdin the trackpad button) and the screen is black and there is still no chime.

Any help will be immensely appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Wow, that sounds like a problem! Well, you've done all the things I would have done so far. A couple of questions though:

1. Does the backlight for the screen come on at all, do you see a gray screen for a moment?

– If not, then I would suspect that the MacBook Pro is not even getting any power and therefore the other actions like resetting the PMU, PRAM, SMC, Safe Mode, etc aren't actually happening at all anyway.

2. Did the Lion DVD get "sucked" or feed into the SuperDrive? That is, did you push the DVD in all the way manually and it didn't even power mount the DVD, or did you hear the drive spin the DVD?

3. If you don't see any backlight, ie the screen lighting up at all, make sure that the brightness button is all the way up and isn't dimmed to dark. (F1 and F2 keys on most keyboards, black and silver keyboards)

4. Does the power cord give a green or amber light when plugged in?

You say you have a 2009 MBP (silver keyboard), but the silver keyboards were all pre-unibody and were last introduced in Early 2008 (February). So you have a Core 2 Duo (unless it's a January 2006, then it's a Core Duo, but that's unlikely, since Lion won't even run on that.) I have a August 2006 Core 2 Duo (worlds first Core 2 Duo computer) running Lion 10.7.3 fine. Also you have 4 GB RAM so you have at least a 2007 Santa Rosa Model, So your MBP is either 2007 or 2008.

Anyhow, that doesn't matter so much what pre-unibody MacBook Pro you have. If you're not hearing the chime and you don't have anything in the earphone jack and the volume is up, then you're not getting any power to the logic board. The hardware test (that runs every time on startup) senses something wrong and the power supply won't allow power to go for protection. If this is the case, try taking out the battery, and starting without the battery for a moment (a bad battery can act as a resistor preventing power up), if no avail, then take out the SO-DIMMs (RAM) and put it back in. If that doesn't work, Then leave only one 2 GB SO-DIMM in and see if it will start up then.

Let me know some answers to my questions! I'll try to get to the bottom of this! 🙂

Edit: I forgot, you mention that the led on the lid button is on. This mean that the Logic board does have minimum power and is sleeping. You need to make sure the light goes off and it's all off before you can turn it on, that is start it up. If the light won't go off after holding the power buttom for 5 seconds then, just take out the battery and unplug the power cord. That'll surely cut the power, then try starting it up without the battery and only with the power cord, and make sure you see a green led on the magsafe. Hopefully that'll show a sign of life on the MBP!

Hi Gator!

Thanks for your time and suggestions.

I really apreciate it.

🙂

1- The backlight of the screen does NOT com on. There is no chime either. The tiny light located on the lid button does turn on. I also hear the DVD spinning, however, it won't boot from it nor does it is spat out when I start with the trackpad button pressed.

2- The DVD was normally sucked in. I just gave it a little push.

3- The F1 and F2 keys don't respond. Nor does the Cpas Lock key turns it's light on when pressed.

I suspect the clock battery has something to do with this. It was an unpleasant coincidence with the problematic Lion Update.

I guess I'll take my MBP to an Apple Store and have them check where the real problem lies.

I thank you once again for your kind and prompt reply, Gator.

Sincerely,

CB 😉

Hi Camarillo,

I think you're right about it being a coincidence with the problematic Lion Delta update. Did you update in the last 24 hours? I ask because I think Apple changed the Software Update to use the Combo update instead of the problematic Delta update.

The clock battery can cause some strange things to happen. But I don't think that is the problem. (While I was typing below, I saw some articles, and posted links below)

I see that you said that the sleep led on the lid button isn't on anymore. So I assume you took the battery out and unplugged it. That would solve the problem of clearing the RAM (and shutting it down). So you have removed the battery and unplugged it, then plugged in the magsafe cord, and now the power button will not do anything? If that's the case, especially if you tried it with and without the battery, then I would say there is a problem with the internal power supply. If you see a green, and especially an amber light on the power cord, then the power cord is likely not the problem (but rarely could be!).

When you try to turn on the MacBook Pro, the DVD drive still starts spinning? If that's the case, then obviously the drive is getting power, but the Logic board won't accept the power or it has failed. If you tried removing and reinserting the SO-DIMMs and tried using either one alone (for just 2GB), and still no power up. Then I guess a trip to the Apple Store is likely. Unfortunately, even if you had the 3 year Apple Care Plan, it's expired. Silver keyboards ended after early 2008, and Apple Care would have expired last year at the latest. Hopefully they can find some obvious problem I hadn't thought of.

If it were me, I would take the MacBook Pro apart and look around. If you have experience doing that, give it a try, it's not under warranty anyway. Also, even though I have some experience with laptop repair, I still use instructions on what screws need to come out for what parts to get to. I recommend a great site called ifixit.com:

MacBook Pro Repair - iFixit

This is specifically for the 15" MacBook Pro's: (there is only one 17" that fits your description so I assume yours is a 15")

MacBook Pro 15" - iFixit

I'm currently replacing a simple power jack on a 12" PowerBook and it is the most ridiculous item to get at on this model (12 inch PowerBook), 61 screws and the complete removal of the heat sinks and logic board! All because the bottom doesn't come off, everything attaches to it from the top, the bottom is like a bowl.

You might like browsing the site anyhow. I just found this discussion which seems to pertains to you. Your problem apparently is somewhat common, and maybe Apple will make an exception (on cost) because of so many problems with the 2007-2008 MBP! Here's part of the discussion:

The question was why didn't the devs pick this up. The answer is because, as devs, we tend to automatically prepare to deal with a beta in the same way everytime, to reduce any errrors. We either flatten our machine, do a clean mount of 10.7.2, and then apply the beta, and test, or we follow the broadcasted best procedure, which is:

1. Run disk utility and run verify disk, and if clean, do a repair permissions. If not clean, boot clean and repair, repeat.

2. Reboot

3. Install the update (combo preferably).

4. Reboot.

5. Rerun disk utility and run verify disk, and, if clean, do repair permissions. If not clean, boot clean and repair, repeat.

Because of this, our machines are clean and properly operating.

The problems are occuring because, primarily, of permissions issues, which will cause the install to fail, under the covers. Why Apple doesn't force a permissions check/repair prior to a major update is a question that never has been answered.

Having what identical problem? You MacBook won't even start up, so sign of life, fail logic board as in Camarillo's case? Oh, I see you're replying to Wilfried, so you have the CUI ??? problem. That's what happened to me with both iMac's when I used the SW Delta Update early on. Since then I've used the Stand Alone Combo Update on all 4 Mac's. Do you not have all those things that Wilfried didn't have? No Second Mac, Recent Time Machine Backup, Etc?

If you have any Time Machine Backup, I would use that, even if it's not that recent. Wilfried was complaining that he would lose an email, but IMAP email account usually keep messages. Unless he deliberately deleted the message and saved it on his Mac, he should do the Time Machine Restore also.

If you have a Install DVD, even a Snow Leopard DVD, you can use that to restore with Time Machine. You may even be able use that DVD to install the Combo Update using the terminal while booted up from the DVD. I described how to do that on page 21 (CUI CUI CUI error 10.7.3 all apps...: Apple Support Communities). I don't know if the Snow Leopard DVD has all the tools that the Lion restore boot has though. Such as opening Safari and running the Terminal. I haven't checked in a while.

Good Luck!

Guys,

The Best solution is to :

1- Restart your system then press cmd & R at the same time. ( this will boot to OSX Utilities )

User uploaded file

2 - Click on Reinstall Mac OS X ( Make sure you are connected to the Internet )

3- Just wait till the process finish . ( about 45 mins )

This is the Best & easiest soultion without losing any of your Data & getting OS X 10.7.3 without doing any update.

It worked fine for me 🙂
