All 3 PowerBooks got corrupted disks upon getting 10.7.3. The 15 in Core 2 Duo Early 2008 with 4GB RAM crashed head on, damaged a set of Time Machine (I keep 2 separate disks for each one) and had to be reinstalled completely twice. The newer 15, summer 2009, with 8 GB RAM and the newest 17 BTO with an SSD, 8 GB RAM were lucky to have the disk repaired by the Recovery Disk but not without quite a headache. I did my 17 first and then worked my son's via LogMein, he is studying in Spain, having to coach him with the Recovery HD via Skype and his iPhone. All 3 had been sync'ed last months during my son's vacations to 10.7.2 and all the goodies available until the 24th, when he left back to Spain. The problems came afterwards, and got worse when backups got inaccesible upon being corrupted as well once connected, Time Machine would crash and leave the backup file unrecognizable. I only lost Feb 9th and 10th on my daughter's but have being on top of this for the last 9 days. HINT: Do a LION USB yourself http://www.macstories.net/mac/os-x-lion-installation-guide-boot-discs-and-qa/ It saved me time for my daughter's second installation. ALSO: Run Disk Utility frequently, daily if possible, and defragment (I had become lazy on those two) LASTLY: have TWO separate HDs for Time Machine and keep two separate backup sets, it saved my daughter's. Those portable Passports and Seagates are fantastic and faster than the 1TB Time Capsule I have (fisrt generation), which I have linked to a desk 2TB Seagate so, each one holds a set for each Mac.

I'm a Mac user since the 128K BACK IN 1984 and this won't change me a bit. My son's has Parallels with Windows XP and 7 since his lab is running WIndows and stayed with the academic iMac (white) and has exceedingly poor IT response to students but, I HATE Winblows. Nevertheless, I guess Apple owes us an explanation. We've lost time, its my 10th day on this, and many people may have lost valuable data. My son's doctoral thesis data was at stake, compounded by my inability to work his Mac directly. I did keep a full backup of his at home when he left but the stress this put me thru has no match in my 55 years of life. I have been scanning and shreeding files for months, and all taht would have disappeared, My daughter emailed an essay 8 minutes before midnight's due date due to this without allowing me time to proofread it.

iDisk is gone, I used to do everything there and never used my Documents folder now, I'll have to go for other alternatives. I've learned to mistrust luck and computers with my G3 PowerBook, it corrupted the HD and the backup as well and I lost nearly everything, what I recovered cost me a couple thousand bucks. SOmehow, get your life sustaining data on the cloud, it can be emailing it to yourself, Google, iCLoud, Dropbox (works almost identical to iDisk) BUT, never trust just your computer and your backups. Even SSDs HDs, I was swearing they would not go thru this kind of problem. You bet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let's see how the Combo thing goes on.

Wow, sounds like quite an ordeal! Have you been reading this post? I've (and others) have posted many working solutions, especially on page 21 and 24. A reinstall of Mac OS Lion from the Recovery Partition works perfectly every time, that I've heard of.

Also, the Combo Update almost always worked too, if Apple had included that in the Software update from the beginning instead of two days later then this post may have never started!

Apple did change the way Time Machine works between 10.7.2 and 10.7.3. Nothing noticeable, but changes underneath. I did a Time Machine restore on my first iMac, but then on the second iMac, I realized that the Combo Update worked fine. So I wasted a 10 hour Time Machine restore to 10.7.2 before doing the Combo Update. You can do the Combo Update right on top of the bad Delta Update to Mac OS X 10.7.3. If your Finder isn't working, then try the steps I described on page 21 and 24. Either that, or do the 45 minute complete re-installation of Mac OS X (from the restore partition). Re-installing doesn't erase or even change your settings and preferences! (I'm still not used to that, I remember the "Clean Install" from the Leopard and earlier times.) There is no "Clean Install" anymore, unless you actually tell it do erase your Volume! (Don't do that!)

I have a friend who has re-downloaded Lion and reinstalled it twice because his WiFi wasn't working, but he's using it as a router through Internet sharing and he's had problems with it before.

Hope you have better luck!

I did have a problem with the Recovery HD and the computer connected directly to Internet Recovery showing a world globe turning around, it failed the first time but succeeded the second time and I got my Recovery HD back again, that was one of my 3 PowerBooks. I even had to start on HD mode to copy the user's folder to the other Mac just in case, and that Mac had to be reinstalled twice. What it did while connected to iinternet recovery, I don't know.

Feb 12, 2012 3:48 PM in response to Gator TPK

Unfortunately, no.

I just found this post now that I'm relaxed with all 3 Macs running so, I started to look around and found 2 articles addresing the problem but, I've tried every possible option juggling user folders back and forth when I found out backups were affected as well by Time Machine crashing. But I did do a reinstall thru the Recovery Disk and it went fine, allowing for DSL speed, until it started all over again. Now I have downloaded the Combo, already copied it to an external drive, but I think I'd better wait for my daughter to finish her college essays for tomorrow before putting a finger anywhere. I'll have the whole day tomorrow to crack my head but she only has a couple of hours left for her homework. She has not been able to do lot of stuff, even though I do keep and old G4 working great and running right now. I never get rid of my oldest Mac, actually keep 4 just because of these events.

You said "3 PowerBook's", you mean MacBook Pros? At first I was thinking you cant do internet recovery on a PowerBook, then seconds later, you can't run anything beyond Leopard anyway.

Anyhow, when you copied the user folder to another Mac just incase from Target mode, did you have trouble with that? It just seems like you had some hard drive problems. But if you say you had all these problems on several Intel Macs, then that pretty rules out hardware problems. The only other thing I can think of is that you're running a particularly rare piece of software on all the Macs and that caused the multiple problems. Something like Hard Drive recovery software or Hard disk monitoring software. Maybe something like that, that had it's own private API's that broke when Mac OS 10.7.3 update was installed.

What I don't understand is why your Time Machine Data was corrupted also? It's usually incredibly reliable. I've had trouble with Time Machine, like it wanting to do a complete backup, instead of a delta backup as usual, and that backing up two Mac OS X partitions running two versions of Mac OS X onto one TimeMachine partition. That didn't seem to work very well, and just kept building a ridiculously large 2+ TB ".inprogress" package.

I say that it's incredibly reliable because when ever I have done a restore, it has never failed! But making backups sometimes has hiccups.

Well, I'm glad you've seemed to get most of the problems fixed. And yes, I have many Macs, 4 of them run 24 hours a day and all have Mac OS X 10.7.3, so non of them were immune to the Delta Update problems.

I lent out all my G4 Powerbooks, I just can't really use them anymore now having seen Snow Leopard and Lion.

It is pretty cool that Target Disk mode has been around since at least the G4 machines! I've used that many times.

Feb 12, 2012 4:30 PM in response to Gator TPK

UPS, typo, mental one, I continue to forget its MacBook Pro now. My G4 is senile but it did help this time. I'll go on updatingit until its battery dies, which appears to be getting close according to iSTAT PRO, but I never unplug it. Apparently, upon trying to restore my daughter's, which was my first option and the first one to crash, Time Machine crashed and rendered the already opened backup files unusable, they were actualized to the last hour. I must admit I don't monitor my daughter's downloads and she did destroyed a Presario laptop she had once since she would download things without thinking and, lot of games and junk, she was 13 or so. But my son's Presario didn't fair well either. I then forced them to use Mac despite their school's Window's environment. But I don't think, haven't seen, any of the programs you mention and had already gone thru the delete process of all PowerPC-only programs when installing 10.7.2.

I did not have problems finder-copying the user folder, not that I can remember right now, I'm almost burned.

You mentioned delta backups and .inprogress backups for TM, the last I noticed during this ordeal but had never heard of the first. I guess I have some reading to do. And, I tought the larger the hard drive, the better. Specially, since I am backing up 3 Macs to the same drive?

Thanks

Sorry, one last thing: When did COMBO come out? I am now doubting if I downloaded before or after COMBO got released. Really, didn't notice the aftername if it was there.

Ah, yes, it's the Delta Update that caused all the problems in the first place! Software Update changed that to the Combo Update about two days later (around February 3).

About the Time Machine, in theory it should work fine about backing up multiple Mac OS X partitions to one Time Machine Drive. It's recommended to backup each Mac to a separate Time Machine Partitions. An external disk can have many partitions. A Time Capsule can't. I don't know which you use (or both?). I recommend a direct hook up external hard drive. And go ahead and repartition a new drive into three (or how ever many Mac's you have) partitions and do Time Machine backups on those individual partitions. Better yet, buy a single external hard drive for each Mac. That's the best and most reliable.

In my case, I have two Mac OS X partitions on one internal hard drive. One is my main, the other is to test things on. (I can dual boot. Besides the recovery partition)

Pondini (he's a Apple Support Communities Regular) has been very helpful with me in my Time Machine troubles. He has set up a website written all by him all about Time Machine. Lot's of good information and tips!

Here's his website:

Time Machine - Troubleshooting

Here's his FAQ's:

Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions

and in that, here's the question that you may like to read!:

Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions 4. Can I back up 2 or more Macs to the same external HD?

The third paragraph (partitioning) is what I was talking about.

There really is so much to Time Machine, it is quite remarkable (when it works perfectly)!

To all the people who were working feverishly towards important deadlines and thought to themselves, now would be the perfect time to make a modification to my operating system: give your head a shake. If you don't have a backup and/or can't afford to spend a measely couple hours restoring the backup or performing a reinstall.... why would you do this?

I suppose, these Mac users have never had a problem with a simple Delta Update! I didn't think much of it either, and I develop. Didn't take me long to fix the CUI ??? errors on my Macs though.

If having a problem with Mac OS makes soemone think of changing to Windows, Its like getting a shot on your head for getting a traffic ticket!!!!!!!! Thanks God for each problem I'd had with my Macs for nearly 30 years! Each one prevented over a hundred had I been using Windows. I loved your references and Thanks you for them. Certainly, we have to be paranoic when dealing with machines, circuits, networks, electrical supply and surges. If you are not to deal with this preventive paranoia, you'd better stay with the abacus and keep children and pets aways, they love those little colored balls! Prevention is worth an ounce per several tons. Apple has its responsibility and it should come forward with an apology, at least but, we are the end users and its our responsibility to be careful and follow the primary rules of safety. I could have 5 PCs for each Mac but, what for, to have the occasional mishap multiplied by 500 and on a daily basis? One more step forward in learning, experience, wisdom and prevention. One more reason to keep my children away from updates and upgrades until I HAVE DONE IT and, to go on installing these a week or two after release as I always do so, problems get known and commented beforehand. This time my son dragged me by installing first so, I had to follow suit immediately and, Thanks God I did, I got the problem and found the solutions before his Mac ran into trouble 6000 miles away!

"Well, it looks like everyone who's recently posted here has had eventual success with their 10.7.3 Update in one of about 4 ways to update! That is except for rsnyder6 and jhuber222."

Yes, I tried again today and still no luck for me. I have downlonaded a new copy of Lion from the Mac App store, booted with a clean user, tried fixing permissions, etc.

Still the same issues for me. Drop box hangs, Safari hangs, some "applet" hangs, crash reporter hangs TotalFInder hangs or will not start, maybe some more - I never get that far past those things that are start up items, so there is likely more. If I boot into a user that doesn't have the login items, Safari still hangs. (By hangs I mean huge CPU usage, and never start. Safari just give me a blank window.)

I tried again so I could get the Messages beta to run, (and I need to get it to work at some point) but alas not good. I guess my next step is to try installing Snow Lepoard and then Lion again. (Can I install Snow Lepoard over Lion?) I suppose I can format the disk and reinstall everything, but I would really like to avoid that whole lengthy process. I had to do that for other people, and always things get lost, or lots has to be reset. (It would fix the BootCamp partition issue though.)

As it is 10.7.2 work pretty well for me, and I'm not sure I want the hassel of messing with everything, espcially if it will not work. There must be something in my set up that is the problem, and I'd hat to do a lot of work that deosn't fix it. --Roger

It seems there is something else wrong with your Mac. Have you tried creating a new user account? If that works maybe your users have wrong permissions.

Try this:

  1. Restart your Mac into recovery mode.
  2. Open the Terminal from the Utilities menu.
  3. Type in resetpassword and press return. (Don't worry you will not reset your password.)
  4. In the reset password window select your user account and at the bottom of the window select repair permissions. It will take a few minutes.
  5. Restart your computer.

The usual disk utility will not repair your users persmissions so to correct your users permissions you have to go through the resetpassword app.

Well I finally took the plunge. I backed up everything on the computer twice, (OSX, the BootCamp partition, and the Linux partiton, I had it set up for triple boot), made a Lion boot disk, formatted the hard disk in the computer, and did a clean install of Lion (10.7.3)

I ran migration assitant. When I booted the same as before. Dropbox doesn't load, just uses a lot of CPU. Same with TotalFinder. Safari runs, but never loads a web page. I see others are having both the Safari and Dropbox issues. Updating to Safari 5.4.1 didn't help. I have to quit Safari, and then WebProcess to speed things up. With TotalFinder, in some places the process is called applet.

I must still have something conflicting, but it is going to take a while to find out what. If I don't run TotalFinder, DropBox, and Safari, things aren't too bad so far, (it has only been a couple hours), though OmniGrowl is using CPU, but it would do that every so often in the past, so I don't know that it is related. That others have at trouble with some of the same programs make me think I can fix it somehow.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions, I have tried them all.

I would be thinking that a lot of your third party programs may well need to be updated to work properly with Lion. some may even need to be reinstalled from scratch. You may have just carried over and exasperated problems that were not so evident in Snow Leopard but have come to the fore in Lion.

I've been cleaning things out. The whole machine is a bit snappier, (likely in part to the reformat and reinstall). I also was able to add the Lion recovery partition. (I could not before because of the BootCamp partition).

TotalFinder started working by itself all of a sudden, but the stopped when I rebooted (as I was removing other things). Dropbox and Safari are still no goes. Dropbox doesn't start, and Safari runs but will not load pages. Others are having the same issues, but I'm not sure anyone has the whole combination.

Safari does run on the recovery partition, which is now 10.7.3, but not even on a new user. Still more exploring.
