Interesting... I also have VirusBarrier X6. What you said makes sense.

I thought though that macpro was also part of the problem, since only macpro people have been complaining....

Final update:

Well that idea was blown completly out of the water; as it didn't work as I hoped it would, third party firewalls are not the cause of 10.7.3 not installing. It was not possible to upgrade my mac book pro to 10.7.3 as it was, however I did eventually. Having two hard drives I thought that may have been the cause, sadly not.

My solution was to remove the 500mb drive leaving only the 98Gb SSD within the Express port, install a clean Lion onto it and perform all the updates – which worked successfully and without any errors. Then I restored my profile & apps from backup and everything seems to be working fine.

I am still no wiser as to why 10.7.3 doesn’t install, but the method above does work and the most simple method; albeit time consuming.

I may be one of the luckier ones, but I needed to remove all peripherals. The first 2 times I'd left my wireless keyboard dongle (from a logitech keyboard) so I could hold down the shift key. Once I removed that the computer booted correctly.

It's a Mac Pro 2009 model if that helps.

Exactly the same issue on my late 2011 model Macbook Pro. Software update, got stuck on 'moving items into place' - needed a power off and restore from Time Machine backups.

Then tried to update by downloading combo update, it installed perfectly on my Macbook Air, but again stuck on 'moving items into place' on Macbook Pro for over 9 hours!!

Powered off again, restored again from a Time Machine Backup.

Have logged a case with support, but they aren't able to suggest anything helpful. I will not be reinstalling this update, am planning to stay at 10.7.2 until I see evidence that the problem has been acknowledged and fixed.

Seems specific to Macbook Pro hardware.

I have this problem too. MBP. I need to do some work for tomorrow and all I have after the crash on moving-into-place is a spinning wheel. Can't get "recovery mode" to load.

Haven't backed up to tm for several weeks & have stuff I can't loose. Sorry but this is rally bad. Never had problems before.

Now on second restore, tried yesterday(restore one),tried today, 4 hours later still moving files into place, so now on restore two(glad i have a time machine back up).

Do not intend touching 10.7.3 until it is fixed(hopefully by 10.7.4).

Having to send this by Windows XP while my MacBook is restoring.

I need to add my vote on this problem also. About a week earlier, I read about all the problems with the software update version of 10.7.3 and decided to do the combo update (original version). Got the same problem discussed here where it stalled at "moving items" - the status bar was almost all the way across except for a small 1/8" area and never moved again after several hours. Had to force it off, trying to reboot w/ no luck. Ended up restoring from my network Time Machine. I tried again last night with the new software update version w/the new combo update - got the exact same problem. I hope Apple addresses this problem and lets us know this specific problem has been addressed, otherwise, I'm too afraid to do any further updates for 10.7.

Do a clean install from scratch; call the account something new, and then do all updates which will install 10.7.3 without any problems. Once completed you use the migration tool to migrate over your account, apps, etc., then delete the orginal account.

Same thing happened to me. I am not sure if iy was a good idea but when the update stuck I eventually decided to turn off the macbook. When I restarted "horror" an indefinite spinning disc on a white screen. After looking for some advice I did a safe start up ( Start Macbook and press the shift key) which worked and restarted straight after as advised. The update was installed so everything seems OK. Posssibly lucky.

I note some advice seems to be to unplug periperals and wait.

I have tried to install the combo update today, it hanged with "1 minute left", for 40 minutes.

I found the following lines in the log:

So I did on the terminal:

cd /var/db/dyld

sudo mv dyld_shared_cache_x86_64 /var/run

sudo mv dyld_shared_cache_x86_64.map /var/run

And: the install continued and finished some minutes later!

Dont see why a clean install from scratch or having to mess around with logs should be required.

APPLE need to get their finger out and solve 10.7.3, an update is after all an update and it should not entail all this messing around.

OR have they solved it and we have to wait for Mountain Lion in the Summer ?

as you can tell i am stiil cheesed off with this and unless Apple come up with an update that works, i am sticking to 10.7.2 (or upgrade to Mountain Lion)

It went ok on my new iMac but crashed on my 2 year old MacBook Pro: i got the "Moving Items Into Place - Time Remaining About a Minute.

I switched the thing off after an hour and restored from Time Machine. Thank goodness that works....

I suffered a lot of frustration for a lot of people with this update - which didnt seem to do very much anyhow.

I have been running the 10.7.3 update and the 10.7.3 server update many times on 10.7.2 Macs in my classroom over the past few weeks, and I can possibly eliminate some theories:

In every case, the machines were 2008 and 2009 iMacs that were imaged from the same image on a server, so there was NO additional third-party software or extensions on the systems. They didnt have ANY third party peripherals plugged in.

About 50% of the time the updates finish promptly (about 15 minutes) and the rest of the time they take hours, or never finish. And it is different machines each time so theres on consistency as to the model or the particular machine. Still no solution.

I've been using the 10.7.3 combo update downloaded from Apple, btw.
