10.7.3 update appears stuck

I am installing the 10.7.3 update via Software Update. The update appears stuck while "moving items into place." The progress indicator has not moved beyond roughly the 95% point in an hour. The progress indicator is simulating movement but no progress appears to be made. The screen is dimmed on the gray linen background. Has anyone else seen this? Any idea what to do?

(I am, of course, posting this on a different Mac, on which I have not yet tried to install the update.)

Also, my MacMini 2,6 GB with OSX 10.6.8, has almost died after Apparently the trouble is not a problem of Macbokks, only. I started installing OSX 10.7 from a flash drive. It stopped after the installer asked me to restatrt the computer. Whatever I tried since than to get the machine running again failed. Unfortunately, I have no recent backup. The reason for changing to Lion was to save my "mac" email adress. Apple delivered the stick with no word or explanation, and there was no warning with the start of installing. I think, it's a shame for Apple, and no longer I shall recommand Macs. It is the first time since OS 6.5 that updating/upgrading makes such a serious trouble. It's true: Never change a running sytem. However, I still hope to find a solution as I need the contents of my hard disk.

Such a shame that you blame Apple for you not having a backup... but lets help you get you data.

  • Get an external hard drive that is large enough to hold the contents of your "bad" drive.
  • Connect it and boot from the OS installer disk.
  • Use the Disk Utility to partition the external drive as GUID and format as Mac OS Extended Journaled
  • Install the OS onto the external drive
  • After the install, the Migration Assistant will ask you if you want to migrate your files
  • Say yes and point to the internal drive
  • Select only your user account data - do NOT select to transfer any apps (You can reinstall those later)
  • Once you have you data recovered up on the external and have verified it, you can clone the contents back to the internal by using CCC or SuperDuper.
