Security Update 2012-001 crashing on PPC file dialogs

After installing the update AppleWorks and Eudora crash any time I try to access any kind of file dialog: Save, Save As, Open, etc. Do any of you have the same problem or a fix perhaps?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8), Intel

Thanks for that Daniel, to much relief after restoring from TM I applied the new version of the update and my old Rosetta dependent apps are working.

I can't understand though is how such a major 'mistake' slipped through the net at Apple Q&A along with the problems that Lion users are having as well. Is this what we can expect from Apple in the post Steve Jobs era?

The 1.1 update is now allowing Rosetta apps to work in Snow Leopard. Huzzah! I'm back to work, and things seem to be running smoothly again.

And the 7.6.1 update for Airport Extreme is now working, too - what, a few months after 7.6 was released?

Yah know, we're not all just reading our email, surfing the web, reading iBooks, and playing games on our Macs. Some of us are actually working in a production environment, on deadlines, to pay bills, and we just don't have time for this. If I let Software Update install an update onto my computer whenever it darn well pleases, I need to know that I know that I know that I KNOW that Apple has properly vetted this software before release, that it's not going to hose my computer without at least a big announcement beforehand, so I can prepare myself and my clients.

These two situations were completely unacceptable, and not up to Apple's usual stratospheric standards.

Now I can get back to loving my Apple products, as usual. All is right with the world again.

Daniel:

First time on this forum, not a super techie, but have been reading posts form everywhere re: Apple Security Update 2012 ver 1.1 for Snow 10.6.8.

My situation is a little different. I did NOT install the original update that resulted in all the problems. I have a July 2010 white Macbook and don't have PPC stuff or Rosetta......light user...just some word docs transferred from my old PC...no Windows Partition or Word program installed. Am on a one computer home network...no work server. I always wait a few days on Security Updates to see what happens, which turned out to ge a good thing !

My question to you is:

Since I didn't install the original, should I go ahead and install the DL 1489 1.1 version for Snow 10.6.8? Or is that just the FIX update only for those who installed the original update from Feb 1?

A little confused. Also....in my laptop Software Update, it shows that the newer 1.1 update is only partially downloaded-11%.....so I assume maybe it is corrupted or has some sort of problem. I also assume then that I must go to the download site and use the download stand alone installer if I still need this 1.1 version.

I wonder, too, then, if that is the case----how do I get rid of the bad download in my Software Update (short of calling Apple Care for help? Their lines are jammed even a week later)

Can you clarify this for my situation? Perhaps there are others in my situation. Any help is appreciated.

buster2le,

Yes, you should probably install the new version of the security update, you can do so manually quite easily. No, it does not require that you already installed the previous 1.0 version of the Security Update 2012-001 (Snow Leopard).

If your Software Update is 'stuck', simply manually download the updated 1.1 version here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1489

or the direct link to the download:

http://support.apple.com/downloads/DL1489/en_US/SecUpd2012-001Snow.dmg

Install it, and you're good.

Once you are all done, you might want to run the Apple Software Update (under the Apple menu) one more time, install anything else that still shows up, to make sure that you've got no remaining updates.

Thank you for the clarification, Daniel. Much appreciated.

And confirm for me---this DL1489 does not have 10.7 OS (I have a printer that won't operate under 10.7 yet) or anything else to install---just only the Security Update for 10.6.8 Snow, correct? Sorry---just a little unnerved about this whole mess. Plus, I'm still on a big learning curve with my Mac.

The one last question I need answered....in regard to my Macbook's Software update box---

when I open it, as I mentioned....it shows the 1.1 update but it shows at the bottom only "partially downloaded-11%"---so-- even though I will go to the stand alone page to install the correct update...what do I do to get rid of the bad or corrupted partial download showing in my Software Update box panel? Is there a way to somehow delete that other than to just ignore and never check it? Or is it possible if I do the stand alone download from the Apple site that it will disappear automatically on its own because the computer will recognize that the update is now already installed...even though it came from somewhere else?

I just want to get rid of the partially downloaded one from my menu....fearful it might mess something up or somehow accidentally install, though I am always careful.

If you can answer that, I should be done and hopefully won't bother you again. So appreciate the help!

It seems that the server 2012-0001 update still has problems (it never did have a version 1.1).

I applied it today and trashed a MySQL-dependant critical business application. The clone made on friday afternoon works fine. Now for the tedious business of cloning my trashed drive, cloning the good clone onto the trashed drive, testing, reinstalling the database from friday nights backup, crossing my fingers....

Many say that Apple's quality control has really deteriorated, but I've been using Macs for 28 years and these sorts of problems are all too common.

Help!! I was having the same issue after downloading the Rosetta-killing 10.6.8 security update. None of my "legacy" PPC apps (AppleWorks, Filemaker 8 etc) would even launch. I downloaded and installed the NEW 1.1 version, and it makes ZERO difference. All my PPC programs still fail to launch. Am I missing a step?

Mar 27, 2012 10:07 AM in response to kr11048

Hi kr11048 yep you missed a step. You needed to either use Time Machine to 'roll back' to before you installed the 2012-001 update that killed Rosetta or re-install OSX before you installed the revised update (see ds store's post up the thread for instructions). The new version of the update doesn't fix the Rosetta bug it's just a newer version of the same update that doesn't kill Rosetta. It might be worth manually downloading the update (see up the thread for link to download) rather than relying on Software Update.

Hope that helps
