Security Update Feb 2 2012 Kills save option in Word 04

I downloaded the security update today for snow leopard, and now I can't save my MS Word documents. When I click the save button, nothing happens. Has this happened to anyone else?

Backup files off the computer (not TimeMachine) and disconnect.

If you have TM, or a option key bootable clone use that to erase and restore from.

If not, c boot off the 10.6 disk, use Disk Utility to >Repair Disk and Permissions, (do not format or erase!!) and simply re--install 10.6 (doesn't touch files or most programs, but backup files off the machine regardless)

Note: If Disk Repair gives a error that is not repaired, then you have to consider erasing the drive (with Zeros) and try reinstalling 10.6 fresh or replacing the drive.

Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8, it should not include the security update at this time (second pass it might show) because it was just released and they might need to pull it. (they need to pull it)

When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that installed kext files into OS X, you'll know, they won't work.

If you get gray screen, hold the shift key and update your installed software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

Go online and look under Apples Support Page Next to Support their is a magnifying glass search area

Tyoe in seurity Update 2012-001Snow.dmg

the exact name is secupd2012_001Snow.dmg

It should be fairly easy to find

It will take you directly to the correct update

The old security update has been pulled.

You can choose to download it it is 202 mb pretty big if you do not have a fast internet connection.

Download it and install it

Some people have had their firefox disabled by this security update So you may need to use Safari.

You can go to the Apple in the menu on your desktop,

go to Software Update choose to reset your options. It should be available.

If not you may not need to do anything.

It should show the security update 2012-001Snow.dmg v1.1 with out resetting the the software updates

You may or may not get the option.

Everyones computer reacts slightly different.

I turned on my camera faced it toward my screen started recording and then

To prove that something from apple created the problem.

Next

Trust me I downloaded the old version on purpose.

I then installed it to make sure that was what created the problem>

It was

I did tthis so I could help out some of my clients.

I have been using both Mac and Windwoes since 1994.

It messed up the drive I was using. It is a backup drive used specifically for this type of problem

The next morning I looked up to see if there was a cure.

There was I downloaded the new update

It appears to me to be exactly the same name as before

However it is not

they added the word Snow to the end of the security Uodate 2012-001

the version was 1.1 and not 1.0

If this had been my main drive I would serriuoely be upset

That is why I video taped the whole fiasco.

Apple owes everyone an apology but as of yet

I have seen None.

I gueess out of site out of mind.

My biggest complaintstill, is that Apple is ignoring the fact that people will be having problems for weeks to come

They Apple needs to flat out ad mit they did it and Post it on thier Main page in plain view

Come on Apple Get with it.

I video taped the wrong doing as I was hoping to not have to prove a point and show this to the media.

They do not have much longer to appease me I am just about through with babysitting efforts.

I have had 5 clients with problesm none of them knew what happened until they tried to use a couple of their old progams

Word, Colorit, Macrpmedia Freehand version 11 and Firefox 3.6.8 and 8.01 which surprised me

Thank you! I looked at the download site and saw what I thought was the bad update, not knowing that they didn't bother to change the name in the list of updates but only changed the patch itself. That hint about the "Snow" made all the difference. Pretty sorry performance, really. Not only did they boot it but they made it hard to find the easy fix. For that matter, how tough would it be for them to simply push an update that checks for the installation of the bad patch and fixes it rather than force everyone to jump through hoops and find it themselves. 😠

I just finally saw this thread after some serious "Searching" wasted about 8hrs of my time on thursday night and friday day and got my system sort of working again on friday afternoon at 5pm the Feb 3rd. Mind you this was meaning the Photoshop I was using CS2 Could no longer save as on files nor could I "Open" files within photoshop. I keeped trying to reinstall the "Security Update" and finally I got my file save issues resolved within photoshop CS2 taken care of but had all kinds of "errors" and warnings and issues through out the system. So off I go to do something on Saturday and return and jump back on my system everything seems fine I have not rebooted the system or anything but did some emails did some photoshop work and even Lightroom work. NO issues. I burn a music CD even for the kid no issues. I pop in a movie or DVD and poof the disk does nothing and I can eject it either. So I force eject by rebooting the system and holding eject button and when I do that I get the Grey Screen of Death.. Nothing works! But my issue is just prior to this happening Saturday night the 4th I alllows "Auto Update" or "System Update" install the other Apple Update which was RemoteDesktopclient3.5.2.dmg. It seemed a bit suspicious as it did it literally in a instant it didnt take 30 seconds to say download the file and then go through the motions. but I wasnt paying attention that closely and thought it had previously downloaded the file and it was already there to install.

So now it appears the same issues has happend with the another apple update that was realeased about the same time or day as the other problematic "Apple Securtiy Update" so those out there be aware there be another problem with Remotedesktopclient3.5.2 as well. I was able to get my system up in the "Safe" mode per the instructions listed here in the beginning of this thread by holding the shift key while booting. But I am still not 100% fixed yet. If I pop in another DVD persay or something I may freeze my machine again. Anyone else having issues with AppleRemotedesktop update? or is this soley the problem stemmed from the first Security update bad download file that this thread is about? anyone if they could advise me?

I also truly belive its really bad in everyone eyes that apple could not at the LEAST mention that there is a NEWER correct or fixed copy of the Securities update on their site. Because people will pull their hair out for hours and hours wondering what the problem is or think "Well thats the same file I already downloaded before no need to download it again" Thanks to that little bit I wasted literally 8hours of my time a ****** off client that I promissed something to and didnt come thru do to this little event.

Not to mention wasting my entire day today sunday sweating bullets trying to figure out if I had a bad drive or lost data etc... At least now I know what the problem is and my data is there and not lost. Now I am beat and hitting the sack very late all because of Apples rude and irresponsibility to even as much mention that there is a new correct download! and that its a "Different one the one from the other day!" Urrrrr......

P.S. I did notice the file from the original bad non working security update file that it was only 32meg and the newer working securities update file is 192meg file size. So I bet the idiot that uploaded did not check if maybe the ENTIRE file was uploaded to apples website. Maybe having to much fun in vegas this past month? Rolling eyes.

Did you download the original update manually or get it from Software Update? I have both the original and 1.1 versions of the update and they are both 202 MB (v1.0 is 202,093,692 bytes and v1.1 is 202,007,990 bytes). Since it looks like your original update file download wasn't complete, I'm surprised it ran at all. And I wonder why your new version is still smaller than both versions of what I downloaded.

I can not reproduce the issues you are seeing with the DVD after the Remote Desktop update, possibly related to the other tinkering done, or coincidental (possibly the DVD drive has started to fail).

(The Security Update 2012-001 1.0 release was 100% reproduceable with causing issues with open/save & print dialgoues in PowerPC apps, So far of at least 5 systems I've put the RemoteDesktopClient update on, none have seen the same problem you have)

On the systems I had tested with the initial update to see how reproducible the problem with PowerPC apps (rosetta) was, the Security Update 1.1 showed up in Software Update automatically the next time I checked (which was several hours after I first saw people post it was available) not sure why it didn't for you.

Sure it was a fairly major bug (for some users, most will not have noticed it), they did release a patch within a day or so that resolves the issue.

This is not the first time that something like this has happened not only for Mac OS, but they'd be reporting stuff like this very often if they included windows, do you really think the media will care? (Assuming they didn't notice themselves since many in the media do use macs)

At least this one didn't cause data loss like some in the past have. (well, I guess some people likely did lose some changes to a file when they hit save, but not complete loss of files on external hard drives like 10.5.0 and 10.4.0, or the Word 2011 bug that turned every characater in a document into *'s if the user then saved, all data in the file was lost, those are just the ones I remember off hand I know there are more issues I've had to solve over time, as likely you have as well)

I manually ran Software Update at least 4 times - never showed up. My Mac Pro however never got the "bad" version and only ever presented the v1.1 version.

Feb 6, 2012 1:21 PM in response to Robfilmmaker

Fat Mac the very first time I downloaded or installed the update was via "Auto Update" not manually. then I eventually after realizing that the file I got via the auto download was "Only" 30megs I thought something was incorrect and after several tries I "Redownloaded" the 192meg security update but had problems of the INSTALLER not allowing me to install the security update. Not till reading this thread did I realize that there was 2 different update releases "THANKS APPLE FOR TELLING ME THIS" urrrr...

Here are some more details or "Issues" I like to add in the mix when I finally downloaded the correct or newer update "MANUALLY" and "EVENTUALLY" got it installed I had a few error issues of files not complying wih permissions or "Securities Persmissions". Some of those error messages were "Dropbox" other one was "Adobe Version Cue" which is a part of photoshop cs2 "I am going to install my boxed version of Adobe CS5 production suite that I have had for a year now for some reason never got around to installing. Stupid I know I have had a brand new box of CS5 sitting on my desk for a year and never bothered to install it. So that takes care of the the Version cue issue but what about the other issues I may have?

I need to know by installing the 2ND software update "Manually" will this cure my problems? I dont believe now that the other update install on Saturday night which was the Apple Remote Desktop is a issue its more likely the "Lingering" issues of the 1st Security update install. Also the 2nd security updates version v1.1 really isnt a "PATCH" to me its just the correct security update. I downloaded the V.1.1 version of the security update but still getting those couple of error messages at the beginning when i first reboot my system the same error messages mentioned above here.

Brian above No its NOT a optical drive going bad. It just would not eject my cd and I had to reboot my computer in order to eject the disk and thats when I got the grey screen of death and was locked up all saturday night and day sunday the 3rd and 4th. Not till reading this thread late sunday night did I realize that I could restart my computer holding the "SHIFT" key and it would luanch in safe mode and then be able to restart my computer again and I would be able to get my computer to work again "Perfectly?" still not quite sure if my system is 100% back up to snuff. So any advice from others on this would be greatful.

I just tested Photoshop CS2 and it opens files and saves them fine no issues on that but have not tried playing imovie or dvds yet or Word some of the programs others had issues in this thread and others.

accidently hit the return key on the last post.

Brian ment to say that was a bit petty to say that to the other guy. That said brian thank you for advice and help you seem very knowledgable and know your stuff.

I learned a new trick about the Safe mode restart by holding the shift key on the system. This was great. But honestly I am very dissappointed by Apple not listing or mentioned the version 1.0 vs the version 1.1 security update to help those out there figure out what may be the problem with their computers so people could fix there systems and get back to work right away. To me that is in excusable of them to not mention it in the update download page. I am a pc apple convert and I am now a mac fanboy big time but I am dissappointed in Apple for making me play dectective for 18 hours and bother Mac friends on the phone for advice just to figure out something so "SIMPLE" to fix! Not cool.. Not to mention how I have a tick off client waiting since friday night for Images from me and me giving them the run around. Urrrr...
