And an even easier (and cheaper) fix is to upgrade to 10.7.4, released today, which fixes the problem in Quark 8.5.1.
Yes, thank you! I suspected Quark 8 had installed a custom font to display the icons on the toolbar, so after a lot of frustrating trial and error testing fonts, I found this thread and set the extensions manager to launch automatically every time I launch Quark. Now the icons display fine!
So glad I stumbled upon this info.... thanks! This worked perfectly. Embarrassing that I rarely check to update. Oh well.

And when you move up to Mountain Lion, Quark 8.5.1 will work there too.🙂
