I'm trying to get .mp4 video files (on an eHDD) to play on an old 500MHz G3 iBook running 10.4.11 - they were originally converted from DVD using Handbrake, on a G5 iMac where they ran quite happily. The G3 has QT 7.6.4, plus Perian, plus VLC - but nothing will play the video. I hear the audio track but the video is just blank black. Normal DVDs play AOK.
Is there anything I'm doing wrong or must I accept that this machine is too old even for MP4 video?

Limnos, BD, I think you have summed it up pretty well - it's something I had better forget about on this machine!
Strangely though, it has no problem playing DVDs full screen.
Nice idea BD. However, the G3 won't burn DVDs, and even if I just converted, there isn't enough room on either the G3 or on the eHDD to hold the 5GB of data necessary. Oh well, it was only a fanciful idea. It would probably be less hassle to get a G4 off eBay!
The DVD format pre-dates the mp4 format so it is probably easier for a computer to decode. My G3 with a glorious 6MB VRAM could play full screen video as long as I used the raw format data that wasn't compressed. Of course a 2 hour video took up something like 60GB! I think the tinier you scrunch it the more it takes to unravel it.
One final thing for me to do now, as there isn't an X11 Uninstall :
I've deleted all the X11 files and folders I can see, but how do I delete the following folders :
private/etc/X11
private/etc/X11.AppleBackup
usr/X11R6
Oops! Not quite what I meant - I already used FAF to 'see' that those folders exist, but as I can't 'see' them in Finder to delete them, can I use a Terminal command to do it?
You can trash from either FAF or EasyFind, Select All, Right click or Control+click & choose Move to Trash or Delete Immediately.
BDAqua filled out my response when I just posted the link to Easyfind. I should have said it was possible to delete hidden files from inside EF.
