mac pro chime repeating at startup

hi, recently i just got a used mac pro (early 2008), it was working great for 2 days, but then as yesterday, when power it on, it will chime, get the grey screen, but then the chime will repeat multiple times. (it does this sometimes) idk what the problem is, i have tested the hardware everything passed, tried resetting PRAM, didnt help. so idk if its hardware related or software related. its running 10.6.8.

if someone could help me figure this issue out that would be very helpful.

You can try it (nothing to loose at this point), but if the system spits it back out or gives an installer error I think you are going to have to buy the retail version of Snow Leopard (I guess this one).

hey again, i powerd it down first, it did restart twice, and then i restarted it again, to make sure it wouldnt chime repeatedly and it didnt.

I assume this is after the reinstall. Good.

Not sure what happened to you the first time around and how the OS got that corrupted but I'm glad you got going again.

If you did a fresh reinstalled, ran DU to check that the drive is ok, ran Apple Hardware Test to verify the hardware as best it can then I'm am running out of ideas.

At the moment there are only two things that come to mind. Both hardware related.

1. If you ran Apple Hardware Test and it didn't show any problems. Did you try to run the extended version of that test which does more memory checks? Also consider running Rember which is a GUI layer on top of memtest. It is a memory-specific checker that may test things that AHT doesn't.

2. Install into another drive in another bay. Maybe somthing is subtly wrong that only shows up at boot.

That's all that's left that comes to mind to me at the moment.

i called apple this morning, and they suggested i take it in, so i am going to apple tommarow for them to diagnose it.

hi, srry its been so long, i just got it back they said the graphics card was failing. and they would suggest that i call ATI and get it replaced

ATI does not support Apple graphics cards.

Who told you to call ATI? Is this a real Apple Store or a one-size-fits-all PC shop?

I just diagnosed a Mac Pro with this issue and it turned out to be a bad external usb hard drive. Hope this helps someone.

I had the same problem and I just fixed it by disconnecting a USB flash drive that was formatted for Windows. Hope this helps.
