Smooth Panning on Final Cut Pro?

Hi there. This should be easy ... but, I'm not having any luck.

I have a fairly wide image loaded into Final Cut Pro (7.0.3) - and I simply want to track / pan across the image using a lesser frame width.

Everything is set okay and the footage works - however - the panning movement isn't smooth.

I've set the job up again in Motion, but alas, still no joy.

I've set the job up again using movie footage and panning across and that does work smoothly, so it's got to be something about the static image.

Any ideas?

Hi - image is around 1600 px wide by 1080 high, canvas is 1080p (1280 x 1080 I believe).

The image files is imported as a JPEG - did try initially importing as a PSD file but it came in as a movie of about 8 secs. duration.

Final Cut is only something I dabble in, but I know enough about software to recognise I've pretty much done everything correctly, and that maybe Final Cut is just not built to make a camera shot pan across an image 'smoothly'.

I have also set up in Motion but the movement was just as jerky.

Image is wider than the 1920x1080 area because I need to pan across it (from left to right).

I have rendered the move, then exported at 1920x1080 - and then reverted and not rendered, and exported.

Same results on each occasion.

The more I Google this topic, the more it's coming up as 'don't use Final Cut; get a plug-in'.

So at least it's just not me with this issue.

Well, this is kind of the point, although plug-ins and other software are probably better for smooth motion, I would have expected FCP to at least be decent.

I have tried this in Motion with similar results - even after following a tutorial from FCP pages itself.

Anyway - sequence settings:

Frame Size 1280x180 (HD (1280x1080) (16:9) Aspect Ratio

Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD (1280x180)

Field Dominance: None

Editing Timebase: 25

Compression: None

FCP's capabilities in this area are minimal - which is why Motion was a good part of the suite. The two programs work quite well together.

I can't explain why your project from Motion is not acceptable. It has always given me very good results for movement on stills (always with TIF format images).

There is always fotomagico.

Good luck.

Let's see… I take a large jpeg into my sequence; then key frame scale and position for a slow pan. With my sequence compression set to none my ten second QT movie is over 1.8 GB, and my machine sputters trying to play it back. With my Pro Res sequence, the same movie is under 200 MB and it plays with a very smooth pan.

Is it as good as I can get in Motion? I agree with X that this is not FCP's strong suit, but it's reasonably decent.

If you could post a screen shot of your Pro Res sequence settings window it might shed some more light on this.

Just to be clear, I was asking for a screen grab of your settings, which will come up as a dialogue window if you make the Time Line area active and hit command 0.

As to the key framing steps, there are – as always – different ways to do things in FCP. Here's one, assuming you already have a clip in the Time Line: In Canvas, make sure it's set to Image & Wireframe; double click your clip (still image) from TL into Viewer and open Motion tab; on first frame of clip set the scale to desired value; in Canvas, position your image so that it the way you want it for the beginning of your pan and/or zoom; move the playhead to the frame on which you want the move to begin and set keyframes for scale and center; move the playhead to the frame where you want the pan/zoom to end; adjust scale and position of the image in your Canvas to your liking. FCP will automatically set the necessary second set of keyframes – as well as those in between the beginning and end of the move.
