Why does my iMac get so hot?
Thank you for any help in advance. The back of my iMac gets so very hot at the top. It is almost too hot to keep my hand on for any length of time. Is this normal or do I have some problem please?

If mine is working hard like gaming or video converting for a while it gets pretty hot
but not during normal usage
57C for a hard drive temp is pretty high. I would suggest bumping up those fan speeds. I'd suggest getting SMCFanControl http://www.eidac.de
(Make sure you read all the instructions carefully)
I'm curious. Can any of you actually hear your fan running. I never have on mine. It is completely quiet all the time. I have had it for 3 years now and never ever heard a fan running like I often did on my Dell notebook.
I once bumped my fans up to 6000 RPM just to hear what it sounded like and even that wasn't too loud. Usually my fans never go faster than 2000 RPM. Love the silent iMac.
You are very right! Also my iMac has been replaced its motherboard last week. I thought that it may have been due to high temperature and yesterday I noticed that the case gets extremely hot after some time (without doing anything that required heavy computing).
Now I don't even feel comfortable when using it because I expect it to "melt" again sooner or later... :-/
Hello Ciosele,
If you don't want you iMac components to prematurely burn up, again,
Install a software fans control and bump up the fan RPMs to anywhere between 1400-1700 RPMs.
Also, if you have the room, I run small, but high speed fan ( 3-4 inch diameter fan blades) behind the iMac's aluminum back to help dissapate more of the iMac's heat away from the aluminum back. This helps a lot, too!
Thanks MichelPM for the suggestions, I will manage to keep an eye on fans. Do you have any software to suggest? I have noticed the smcFanControl is mentioned above and was wondering if it would be good.
Besides this, I have just a thought: how come I spend more money than I do for a desktop PC to buy a Mac and then I have to worry about temperature? Shouldn't it be designed to work within a max 35°C environment?
This is the first time since my first IBM PS/2 30 (Intel 8086) I had the need to repair a computer.
Though I am still very happy about the product and not going to change (unless I will run into another melted motherboard), I am quite disappointed about this experience. But probably I've just been unlucky 😉
Thanks again and have a nice day! 🙂
I use SMC Fan Control because it's easy and straightforward to use.
