How do I remove the dock from the bottom of the screen on an iPhone?
iPhone 4, iOS 5.0.1
The difference it makes, is that it impacts how the phone looks. Although it may be only a glass shelf, it is visible and sits on the wallpaper which in my case, I've customised. The owner should be able to decide how their phone looks.

nice job apple dumbing down the human race 1 kid at a time !
Not sure what you mean by "dock". If you mean the four apps that sit at the bottom of all your home screens, you cannot remove it. If you mean the scrollable display of recently used apps shown after a double click of the home button, you can't remove that either.
The four apps at the bottom of the screen are sitting on what i am calling the 'dock'. It is like a glass shelf. It wasn't on my phone until today when I pressed something accidentally and it appeared. The problem is I don't know what I pressed so I can get rid of it.

I have always seen the "dock" as you call it on the iPhone.
But some wallpapers show it up more then others.
So it could be that you can see it more clear now than before.
Checked with a friend who has same phone, they don't have it either.
Are you saying your friend does not have the shelf?
Could you post screen grabs please?
If you buy a new phone from the shop, the icons are visible but not the dock/glass shelf
There used to be a much more pronounced dock, but it has become more subtle and glass shelf like recently:
You cannot replace or remove this without jailbreaking.

With the current home bar/dock situation, our background images are marred by this disgusting blurry bar. So annoying. I too had a transparent dock (without jailbreaking) until i made the mistake of changing my background image.
Submit your feedback to Apple here:
The dock has been avaialble with the iPhone since day one nearly 5 years ago. The apps on the dock are avaialble regardless the home screen selected for easy/quick access of your chosen apps in the dock regardless the home screen you are on.
I have Phone, Mail, Safari, and Music in my dock so I can quickly access these apps regardless the home screen I'm on.
You can add/remove apps from the dock. You might try removing all apps from the dock that are currently available there, but there is not an option to remove the dock.
It's not a non-jailbroken or hacked phone. It wasn't on it when I got the phone. Checked with a friend who has same phone, they don't have it either. If you buy a new phone from the shop, the icons are visible but not the dock/glass shelf
Many thanks to yourself and hexonxonx for responding to my post. I took the phone into a phone shop today to ask them if they had come across the issue before. They said that if I had upgrading the operating system recently, that could be the reason it reappeared. I had upgraded from 5.0 to 5.0.1 and had also upgraded iTunes. It was the day after i synced that the dock appeared. I'm assuming that it may due to the above, that the dock is now visible as my phone is not hacked or jailbroken. (I'll check with my friend to see if it is less visible because of their wallpaper).

You learn how to spell by seeing the word written. Siri is one way of learning. Are you suggesting we take dictionaries away from children because they migh look up words and find out how to spell then?
Do you think children are sitting in class talking to their phones?
I hate it too- showed up after a software update. POS, I did find out yiu can remove others in settings, general, dock. And to the people who commented about the dock it is a dang dock. If this wasn’t an apple site I’d change the vowel in dock that’s how much I hate it.

I went to the Apple Store & somebody showed me how to reduce the transparency. That is what it can be done.
You actually want to turn Reduce Transparency to "Off". However, that simply changes the way the Dock looks. It doesn't remove it.

Those 4 apps are suppose to be there.
