Connected my new Apple TV to the ethernet cable and it doesn´t show the network available to connect to internet.

Am I missing some step ?

Thanks

I've had interesting issues regarding this today, check this out...

Two identical setups in two different rooms in a school separated by a single wall:

An Airport Express creating a simple closed network with an Apple TV connected via Ethernet. Airport is connected to a projector. We've used this setup several times already and it works. Initially Apple TV doesn't like not being able to connect to the Internet but once it's all setup it doesn't care obviously with the caveat that they won't be able to rent movies or get updates. In a school setting, this works OK and if someone is savvy enough they can hook it up to their school LAN.

Setup 'A' works fine, Airport creates a wireless network, iPad can join it and see the Apple TV plus send AirPlay content to it.

Setup 'B' doesn't work fine. Airport creates a network OK, and iPad can join it but can't see the Apple TV. Apple TV doesn't get a DHCP address either via Ethernet or WiFi.

I took along an additional Airport AND AppleTV to swap out if the issue was down to a unit fault. I used both of these in turn thinking it was going to isolate the issue down to one of the already installed units. It didn't - they exhibited exactly the same problem - NO DHCP allocation. Interestingly, most of the network settings were blank in the interface - not showing N/A as they usually do.

I next thought it was an issue of a failed Activation, so I reset and connected to my iPhone hotspot and was able to connect to iTunes and set up as a new unit, then play a preview from iTunes. I even managed to send some content via an iPad, I believe.

Having done that I assumed I would be able to revert to my Airport -> Ethernet connection. But no, same deal; empty DHCP details (which were properly populated when connected to the iPhone)

Let's try using a wireless connection to Airport again. Nope.

Let's try manual configuration. Nope.

I'm running out of ideas. OK, what if I take the Apple TV next door and try it there? It worked!

Hmmm, what about the Airport? Swapped that and it worked too!

OK, so what if we try the reverse - take the units from 'A' and install them in 'B'?

THEY DIDN'T WORK!!!!

Swap it all around again, A's restored and working on the original units, B's back in their place and once again NOT working.

Could an HDMI cable be the issue? (AV runs through a receiver) Plugged Apple TV in directly to the projector and it had no effect (but why would it? I am desparate however!).

I bring the Airport, Apple TV and HDMI away and plug them in at home on my TV... worked perfectly.

Is there some environmental issue in room 'B'? I'm not sure what my next move is - I've already effectively tried 3 different Airports and 3 Apple TV's. I might try restoring the software on the unit I brought back, but as it seems to work out of the room as it is, will this acheive anything?

Have the same issue. I installed the latest Airport Extreme today. Every wireles device works great. Unfortunately my apple tv via Ethernet does not work anymore. It gives ip 169.x.x.x. Disconnecting the lan cable and restarting the atv does not work either. It thinks it is still connected to lan. So I can't even connect via WiFi. I've restarted the device many times and even shut down my whole network. Unfortunately no luck. I'll be called by apple support tomorrow. I'll keep the forum updated on the outcome.

OK, I feel I must parade my stupidity here for all to see :-(

I think the original problem was one of a failed activation and connecting up to my iPhone and resetting the Apple TV sorted that and because I was able to see the connection info whilst in that mode, I disregarded the fact that when hooked up to the Airport Express the address was going to be very short i.e 10.0.0.2 and didn't appreciate HOW HARD THE SCREEN WAS CLIPPING!!! Aaargh!

Ultimately, my stupidity boils down to being too fixated on looking for this confirmation of connectivity in one form rather than another, say by just trying to connect via AirPlay.

I think the lesson to take away is to stay calm, keep an open mind and if things start getting wierd it's probably not because things are wierd you've more than likely overlooked something simple.

I am now going to self flagellate.

I went to the Apple Store beause my AppleTV v3 kept retrieving an unexpected IP address and wouldn't join my local network or connect to the Internet. It turns out my particular unit was part of the replacement program for WiFi issues, so even though mine was a complaint about Ethernet they were kind enough to replace the unit for free.

Unfortunately, when I got home, I had the same issue. Switch Ethernet to "automatic" and it retrieves some weird IP address, a different subnet than the one my home WLAN/LAN is using, and no DNS. I've tried re-seating the cables, restarting AppleTV, nothing has worked.

Very, very frustrating!

Does the address look something like 169.254.x.x (i.e self-assigned)? Have you got another ethernet device you can plug in its place to check what address that receives? If it gets a similar address then you have eliminated the AppleTV as the issue - it'll be the DHCP device itself, or the lack of it.

All cables are in the correct holes. so to speak?

It's 2015, just got the Apple TV, and had much the same problem. In my case, it turned out to be a router issue. I had a DLINK DIR-615 router which has never given me a problem - till the Apple TV. So, after speaking to Apple Support, trying various troubleshooting steps, they suggested I take the unit to an Apple Repair store. They were able to connect it to Ethernet right away, so the problem had to be something related to my specific network configuration at home. So, I decided to upgrade the router to a DLINK AC1900. After replacing the old router, connected the Apple TV and BAM!!! Worked flawlessly. I still do not know what specifically created the problem with the old router.
