Ibook Author audio (AAC) media widget rejected in validation??

We have a complex image, video and music book from the Arctic created on ibooks author. Everything seems to validate through itunes producer on delivery except for this error message.

ERROR ITMS-9000: "Files of type audio/x-m4a are not allowed outside of widgets: assets/media/Arctic_master_music.m4p" at Book (MZItmspBookPackage)

We've done everything in widget sizing, placement, audio encoding to aac from QT, itunes and compressor. We can't get past there error? Is there a bug in the ibook author or am I missing someting.

Any ideas. The videos work fine, just the audio clip/

OMG I can't thank you enough. I was about to redo 29 audio files after getting (ERROR ITMS-9000: "Files of type audio/x-m4a are not allowed outside of widgets) The DRM FRee check box did the trick. I delivered! Yay! You saved me days of work and more importantly severe frustration! Now I can go to the beach and celebrate!

Thank you thank you! Janis of "Max Relax!"

Apple hasn't yet addressed the problem yet but the clearly written directions from Providence do indeed work. Rather than rewrite all the meta data from my original submission I ripped and replaced both the full and sample preview .ibook files from separate output: IBA>>>File>>>Publish>>> .itmsp file. Worked great.

Now, Apple, fix your crap software.

I followed your helpful suggestions and Published directly from my open iBooks Author file to iTunes Producer (checked DRM-Free for all territories).

My 47 MB file of a kids' multimedia picture book with about 50 audio widgets and five iMovie slideshows with audio uploaded successfully. Thank you!

iTunes Producer created a cover image for me (yay) and after a brief struggle with screenshots I was able to upload my main file. (When I tried to remove the top black status bar from the iPad2 screenshots the pixel dimensions went off, even though I tried to spec 1024x768. Unedited screenshots went through fine.)

The only problem is the Preview file seems to be empty and iTP won't let me upload the preview file (17 MB) I made manually (by cutting down the original and publishing it from iBA onto my hard drive; the preview has an .itmsp extension). I've tried re-publishing it under a shorter name but iTP still won't let me drag it into the Preview box.

I can't find another preview with the .itmsp extension that was generated automatically either on my system or in the iTunes package for the book... (An auto-generated preview won't won't work anyway because I have hyperlinks from early in the book to a page at the end).

I would appreciate any advice about how to get the Preview to load after the package has been successfully delivered.

Also, can I go back now and active DRM, or should I wait until I can do so with iTunes Connect?

Thank you.

Sorry--I dug around some more and realized my Preview file needed to be .iba not .itsmp. So I re-exported it and iTunes Producer accepted it. I re-delivered the book package with the Preview included which took a nail-biting 15 minutes or so.

Now I'm still wondering if I should go right back and activate DRM or should I wait until it's in the Store and use iTunes Connect? It took so long to upload after I added the Preview I'm afraid to wade in there again...

Thanks again--this forum has helped me so much.

Just to add to the audio debate-

if you record audio using the iPhone Voice Memos app, the files are recorded as mono. If you then try to convert them to .m4a using QuickTime and add them to iBooks Author, you will get an upload error from Apple.

Audio in iBooks Author must be .m4a AND must be stereo. Mono files will result in a rejection.

This was my experience with my book and only after hours and hours of trial and error(s), I found the cause.

Hi!

I am having this dreaded audio issue as well. I tried your detailed method including checking DRM and no go.

Apple suggested that I change m4a to m4p and do this and still no go. In fact, iBook reandomly changes the m4p back to m4a!

From Apple: Until we have a more permanent fix in place, you can resolve your issue in the meantime by adding audio files that end in ".m4p", instead of audio files that end in ".m4a", to the media widget in iBooks Author.

You would need to do the following:

- Delete the audio files from your book.

- Locate the audio on your computer, then export and save the file as ".mp4".

- Add it back into your iBooks Author book, and click "save".

- Click "Publish" in the top right corner of the iBA to deliver your book as an update

Let me know if you have any other questions!

I have loads of audio in 9 books all of which are sitting on my computer because Apple cannot seem to fix this audio bug. I am fuming and would have never used this platform if I knew the program was so unstable. However, I spent over a year on this and need to launch my digital series.

Any insight, advice, tips or tricks beyond the above I am wide open!!

It's been a while since we've had this issue, but we found that most of the time it's a problem with the sample, not the actual book. Are you creating your own sample or just letting iBooks create one for you?

Either way, did you try using this process I outlined earlier in this forum?

When you hit the "Publish" button in iBooks Author it creates an iTunes Producer File or "ITP" it shows up as your isbn # with the extension .itmsp in your finder after you fill in all of the metadata for your publish. You'll do this for both your full book and the smaller sample or preview book. You'll need to remember where you save it when you hit the publish button in iBooks (It's probably easiest to save them to your desktop).

Now that you have the definitions you're ready to give it a try.

1. Go into iBooks Author and open your Full Book version. Hit Publish. Fill in all of the required fields. When you get to the "Assets" tab you'll see a space for your "Publication Preview." Just leave that empty for now, but fill everything else. Leave that iTunes producer window open.

2. Now go back into iBooks Author and open up your preview version. Hit publish (pay attention to where this file is saved). Then close the iTunes producer window for your preview.

3. This is where you need to remember where you saved the preview .itmsp file. If it's on your desktop, right click it and select "Show Package Contents." There you will find a file with a .ibooks extention. This is the file you want to drag into that empty space for "Publication Preview" in your full book iTunes producer file you started in step 1.

4. Once you have all of the required metadata fields filled you're ready to deliver. You might try checking the "DRM Free" box in the "Rights and Pricing" tab to ensure delivery. You can recheck it once it's on the store.

Apple can be extremely frustrating! Half the time they have no clue and are just throwing out random suggestions.

It sounds like you are at a point where you just want to get it on the store. I would try using the sample iBooks Author creates. If that file will deliver, then you know the problem is in your sample not the book. Do you have audio files or video files?
