Disappointed about Pages

Hi all,

I write a book and often I use my iphone and apple keyboard on cafe.. works really well. Ive used plaintext app with dropbox.

After iCloud came I wanted to try Pages once more. Pages doesnt support norwegian language and has never done.. Yes a small country, but good customers and cant really understand why after all these years. But I love apple products and wanted to give it another chance, downloading the pages app for iPhone. I tried it for some hours and then back to Plaintext. I was the worst text edit app for iPhone. It doesnt fit the iphone at all and from my view, its not an app for iphone, but for iPad.

I like to backup my text to icloud as well as dropbox, and after a while I thought its nice to have pages on my mac because of the icloud. I bought it and first thing I did was looking for "sync to iCloud" in preferences and it didnt exist. I have to manually upload and download through a browser.

Ive used apple products for 20 years, im totally in love, expect high standard from sucha company, and they still dont support norwegian language in Pages, not synced with iCloud, iPhone app doesnt work properly.. And me; a Mac, iPhone and iCloud user, writing my project, has to look for text application elsewhere.. Whyyyyyyy apple 😮

Im curious what other people think about this.. What will Pages be like in some years.. May apple fix the pages app for iphone? Pages sync fixed when mountain lion is released? Will they finally include norwegian language?

Cooome ooon, Apple 😉

@ Cattus: Before I turned off spell checker, did more harm then good. But this one is a good sign, getting better and better:) It need more words still, but more integrated.. And the autodetect makes it so much better. Last time I search for it was just a month before this one and I gave up.. looked for a solution for many years. So happy you mentioned it, made me search again.

I get more creative writing places like cafes.. So I carry my apple keyboard with me.. write everything on the iphone. The day pages works on iphone like it does on ipad, Im in sync;)

Really? What language? 🙂

A funny thing you may find interesting: The Vikings that went to Island kept their language, and norwegians to day speak rather danish.. Reading norwegian is so similar to danish. Almost the same. But we speak the words totally different. If you can speak swedish, danish or norwegian, you can comunicate with all 3 countries. Norwegians and the icelandic have to speak english.. same with the finnish. I belive Finnish is the most complicated language in Scandinavia.. Really complicated one.

The 3 Germanic languages of Scandinavia a mutually intelligible, which is not at all surprising given their vicinity; the same with Czech and Slovak or Bulgarian and Macedonian; Spanish and Portuguese would be also mutually intelligible, but the Spanish have problems with Portuguese phonetics, not vice-versa. Swedish was the lingua franca scandinavica for many centuries.

Finnish is a completely different language of Uralic origin, and related to Estonian; at a larger scale, with Hungarian and other related languages of European Russia, but with few speakers now.

I am a Norwegian who´s been living in Michigan almost 20 years. I still communicate in Norwegian, both professionally and privately. Being a former Windows and Office user, I was surprised to find that my new MBP 15" does not support Norwegian spellchecker and dictionary "out of the box". As far as I read online, it does support other Scandinavian languages (at least Swedish). I have enjoyed your conversation here and have downloaded and installed the suggested third party program, which works - sort of. It is not as seamless as I was used to in Windows/Office, and to the extent it is "auto detect", it takes a long time (several sentences) before it decides to switch from English to Norwegian. Also, when I start a new paragraph, it falls back to English, and another several sentenses before it realizes that I am writing in Norwegian.

I know I can manually set the language in Pages, but have yet to find out how to do that in Mail. Any suggestions. However, this is not my preferred way of working, it could be a temporary work around until Apple decides to include Norwegian as a default language choice.

Maybe if all of us who use Norwegian sent a feedback notice to Apple (feedback to iWork, Pages, OS etc.), the next OS, "Mountain Lion", will have this included.

PS: Finland is not a part of Scandinavia, nor is Iceland. However, both are Nordic countries.

As a current user of several spell-checking dics (English, Romanian, Czech, sometimes Slovene or even Latin), I dare suggest some hints:

- Do not work with automatic switch; the idea is beautiful, yet not fully implemented. It would be great if we could connect a certain keylayout to a certain spell checker, unfortuantely this is not possible in most applications (it is in Nisus, well done).

- As I often use other keylayouts than U.S., I modified the original shortcut for spell checking, and put command-G (mnemotechnical from grammar), and select them manually. As said, it would have been great is they were automatically selected when I switch the keylayout, but, alas—

- If you use, as I guess, the OpenOffice specl checkers, be happy with them, I do not know how good of bad for Norwegian, but they are fairly good for Romanian, Czech, Slovene or Latin.

Hope this helps.

P.S. There are two variants for Romanian, as the Romanian Academy has its taste for bad jokes with spelling; Slovenčina is for Slovak, and Slovenščina for Slovene or Slovenian. do not be hurt that Norwegian is not there, Romanian is not either by default and, besides, its recent localization is too bad to be analyzed. Take the beautiful part of life, and enjoy it.
