The sound on my Macbook Pro does not work. When we press the volume buttons, the sound icon pops up, but the bar is full with a small "Does not work" circle below it, and nothing happens when I hit volume up or done. I went into system preferences, but there aren't any options there that I can see to change it.

When you face the side of the Macbook where the earphones plug in you can see a red light in the earphones port when it is activated. Just to the right of the earphones port is a small button with 8 dots to its right. Press the small button. You will see the 8 dots light up green then go out. The red earphones light will go out and your sound icon will be black again - once more, the sound will be coming from your computer.
Thanks to those suggesting unplugging headphones NUMEROUS times. I had same problem and after about a dozen times of removing headphones while playing video, volume buttons finally started working and my Mac's sound worked without headphones.
