Difficulty Installing Updates to Digital Photo Professional

I'm trying to install an update for DPP. I've downloaded the latest file from Canon, unzipped it and clicked the installer. I however get a message back that I don't have sufficient privileges to install and to log back on an an Adminstrator. I've checked and am logged on as an Adminstrator. Any thoughts as to why the difficult?

Not sure why yours won't update; I am on 10.8.2 and have successfully updated my DPP to 3.12.41. I don't remember what version I was up to before the latest update, but I'm guessing your 3.7 may be too old to be recognized by the update installer. That specifically says that you must have DPP installed, etc, etc.

How old is your 3.7? And which Mac OS was it being used with? If you have the original install disk, I'd remove the current ported over version of DPP and try a new install; after that, try the updater again. On the other hand, if 3.7 works, let it go until Canon comes up with another update (not the best idea, but...).

As a general FYI, I've noticed that Canon is not the fastest to make available updates when Mac OS is updated/upgraded.

Thanks for these tips. My DPP 3.7 is just under 3 yrs old. As I've only just moved to a MacBook Pro Retina I was actually using 3.7 under 10.8.2. As for reinstalling DPP 3.7 from the original install disk, Canon tech support also suggested that. In fact they said to try two things; (a) put the disk in a disk drive but don't install and then try the updater; and (b) reinstall 3.7 from the disk and then try the updater. Neither worked.

As things stand I think I'll do as you suggest and hang on to 3.7 under Mac OS 10.8.2 and see what happens when the next Canon update appears. Given the number of photographers who use a Canon EOS/Apple combination it is really bizarre that Canon are not better about updating their software.

Thats not the point. Canon provide a lot of functionality on the disk that Aperture cannot do, and it should work.

As far as I am concerned its another nail in the Apple coffin for me.

No one buys Apple for its spreadsheet and word processing capabilites (unless they buy MS Office) - Apple has always sold itself on its graphics. When software from one of the two major Camera manufacturers doesnt work than its time to thow apple in the bin and go back to Microsoft.

This porblem had been around since Snow Leopard, and Apples answer, just like yours, is to tell people to buy an Apple product to fix it.

Not good enough Apple, not good enough by a long way.

When an OS is updated, it would be impossible to make it compatible with every piece of software there is. The software developers need to make theirs compatible with the new OS - that is why they get advanced releases from Apple to test it. Canon has always been very slow in updating their stuff.

I did not get Aperture because the canon software didn't work - I got it because I like it. I've never actually installed any Canon software until DPP.

I agree with babowa. This is essentially a Canon problem, not an Apple problem. Since posting back in March I have purchased a new Canon EOS 6D which came complete with "up-to-date" disks. When I attempted to install the Canon software I discovered that it was not compatible with OSX 10.8.3 (only 10.7), and for that you needed to download updaters. Which I did. But they didn't work. Canon are always behind the game on software.

No guys, I disagree. To prove my point I just opened my Canon 40D box and tried to load my EOS Digital solutions disk v17.1.

Guess what? Does'nt work.

Thats 2007 software on OSX Lion.

I loaded it onto a Windows XP laptop with no problems and it works fine.

The problem is with OSX. Google the problem to see what I mean. Its been around for a long time.

No excuses apple.
