Login issue on Windows XP, connecting to 10.4

This is the exact problem I'm having with my new Mac, can anyone shed some light on this? My iBook connects just fine, it's only this new Mac Mini.

I'm also having the same problem with a new Mini Core Duo. I can connect to my Windows shares via the Mini, but can't connect to my Mini via Windows. Same as rosolberg described.

But...after reading this post, I tried connecting to my wife's G5 iMac and had no problem! Now I'm really stumped. The problem is indeed isolated to the new Mini.

Is everyone running 10.4.5? I know me and David are both having problems with the new Intel Macs, I believe the first poster is using a standard PPC Mac though so it can't be only an Intel deal. Would a format and fresh reinstall of 10.4.5 help? I'd rather not do that, but I need to be able to create SMB shares...

I don't know if this will help but I was having problems linking my PPC mac and a windoz 2000 machine. I ended up going the browser route instead of login..
I wasn't going through a router but with a crossover cable and I used my 2nd ethernet port with DHCP with manual address
Your manual address on the mac would be say 123.456.0.2
and the PC would be 123.456.0.3
Find the ip of you mac pop that into your browser 123.456.0.2/name of mac and it will bring up everything in your Users folder

The Core Duo Mini is indeed running 10.4.5...just tried again right now and still can't connect. My iMac G5 is running 10.4.5 also, and just connected again no problem. I can ping both machines, so not a connectivity issue. It seems to be an authentication problem. My XP PC sees the Mini just fine, just won't take the username and password.

I've checked all settings and checked them again...I have Windows Sharing enabled on the Mini and my account is enabled for sharing...firewall is off. I've searched all over various boards but this is the only place I've found people having the same issue.

These are the exact symptoms I'm having. I can ping all the machines just fine, just can't connect to the Mini. My iBook running 10.4.5 I can connect to just fine.

On a side note, when I try and connect to a Windows share on my Mini it just says that the alias has moved and can't be found. Not sure if that's related or not.

It's not just the mini having this problem. I have a g5 sitting next to a pc with XP. The G5 can access the pc and pull over files easily. The pc can "see" the g5 but asks for a password to connect to it. No password I've ever used works. Eventually it tells me I don't have permission.

I'd love it if some Apple tech person would tell us how to fix this.

I am having the same issue.

I just got my new mini. I have no encyption enabled on the xp machine and on the mini. I can see the mini fine on my xp browser. I can mount my XP shares on the mini. But everytime I try and mount my mini shares on the XP machine I get prompted for a user/pass that never works.

is there any way to just share certain folders without requring a user/pass?

i'm having the same issue with my intel imac. for some reason the network service on intel imac doesn't want to search for network drives or something when the firewall is on. if i disable the firewall, the computer has no problems finding my shared drives and folders on my pc. the imac cannot see any computer on the network; however, regardless of whether the imac's firewall is on or off, my other computers can see and transfer files to the imac. very odd.

i guess i'll try something like netbarrier (evidently they have universal binary version now) which seems to have better more options to set up the firewall.

Same Issue.

Connection troubles occured after the latest updates (security updates etc).

I have three WinXP Rigs I regularly connect to from my Powerbook G4 with OS X 10.3.9. All three connections behave very differently now:

1. Refuses any connection (no Alias, no "Network", no direct IP working)
2. Only working through Alias but not trough "Network" or direct IP
3. Works fine with Alias or through "Network" but no direct IP

Everything worked fine before the update

I hope Apple is watching this thread for 10.4.6...

I had the same problem but was able to connect to my iMac G5 from my Windows PC running XP today.

Go to System Preferneces -> Sharing -> Service and make sure that you have the Windows Sharing Checkbox enabled. If it is not then enable Windows Sharing and the click the Accounts buttom and enable the Account you want to share on your Mac.

If the Windows Sharing is enabled uncheck the checkbox and then recheck and the click Accounts and enable the Account you wish to share on the Mac.

I had the same problem but was able to connect to my

Sorry, forgot to add tht you then log into your Mac from XP by entering your Computer Nmae and admin password. This will fix the issue on the PC where it reverts to \\[pcname]\[computer name]

It seems it doesn't help to re-enable Windows Sharing, even if you restart between unchecking and checking the box.

I'm having the same problem as described by others above - it seems to be something introduced by 10.4.5, and has completely removed my ability to browse the Mac from my Windows PC (although I can login via SSH and browse using another Mac). It just seems to be Windows Sharing that's completely broken.

Steps I've taken in an attempt to fix things (with no success) so far include:

1. Disabling firewall and Windows Sharing, restarting, enabling, restarting.
2. Changing computer name
3. Changing workgroup
4. Editing smb.conf to add another share manually
5. Talking to computer nicely (remembering to say 'please')

It's interesting that when I've logged my firewall behaviour, it shows that it's trying to block the Windows PC several times. If I didn't specifically open the SMB ports, it'd block them too (even with Windows Sharing allowed through the firewall).

Given that I still can't connect even with the firewall off, I don't think it's making a lot of difference, but who knows?

Just hoping there'll be a fix soon... There's nothing else I can do at this end!

Those are similar to the steps I've been taking. I've even tried talking dirty to the computer with no success.

The Mac Mini I originally had the problem with was giving me other problems with sleep and the DVI port so I ended up taking it back to the Apple store in exchange for a brand new one. The new one fixed every issue I was having except this one.
