Login issue on Windows XP, connecting to 10.4

Did you have this working before you patched to 10.4.5? From what I read above the issue seems to be with people who's mac came with 10.4.5 (like mine) or people who didn't have this working before they loaded 10.4.5 patch.

Well, in my case I didn't do anything until it had installed all it's latest patches, but I assume the installed version would have been 10.4.5 - although it did pull down on first boot.

I'm also a Windows user, so I go into autopilot where patches are concerned!

Always manually download the "Combo" version of any OS update. They are more inclusive. Also when things start to go wonky, and they will, you can rerun it over the install and "refresh" it.

The Software Update auto installer rarely has the combos available. But I did get 10.4.5 as a combo when Software Update notified me (two days after it was available) that it was available, although I'm now back to 10.4.4.

You have to watch what they throw at you. Autopilot here is not safe.

It looks like 10.4.6 fixed the issue for me.

Woo! Same, installed the full 10.4.6 patch and it works a treat!

10.4.6 fixed it for me too... back to how it's supposed to work - at last!

Confirmed here too....maybe Apple DO listen to these posts and whilst not acknowledging a bug - they at least fix it!

Read all the posts and still have trouble connecting, even with10.4.3. Is there a site that tells how to set up both boxes? I probably have my settings wrong. That's because I'm not very knowledgable about protocols and such. I posted earlier in the week about this with no replies and am glad I found this thread. I just want to share between the quad and the xp using a crossover cable. It will share the dial up internet (on the pc) but that's all. And strangly, the mac will start the internet up by itself! I appreciate any help you can be. John

The most basics of basics. I just recieved my mini on fri. and updated on mon using the updates in sys. prefs. Where do I find my current version on the mac and how do update to the newest os? Do I just do it under prefs and updates??

If you click the apple menu then click 'About This Mac', you can see which version you currently have. From the same menu, you can start Software Update, which, as the name suggests, will update your Mac software for you!

Went home last night and updated. Everything is working fine now. Question. Right now I have my firewall turned "off" on the mini. Its hooked up with linksys via airport. Linksys using wep & my PC connected via hardwire has firewall on? I have not tried turning the firewall on the mini, (afraid It will enable me to connect from Pc?) HOW Secure Is My network???. My important stuff is on the PC. The mini will only be used for hometheater & movie making.

OK... back from my absence from the forum!

I upgraded to 10.4.6 on 3 machines: a PB G4, an intel iMac 17" and a MacMini Core Solo.
65MB upgrade for my PB (G4), 105MB upgrade for the iMac and 165MB of stuff for my Mini!!!
The thing is: I can understand the difference between G4 and intel upgrades, but I really can't get why 60MB of difference between the two intel ones!

Nevermind... now SMB is back on track. Auth is good from any windows machine and (most important for me) XBOX auth works again!!!
I have 750GB of stuff that sleeps in a couple of external HDD hooked to the Mini, acting as a NAS for all the other devices on my network. With SMB my XBOX accesses what's inside the disks thru the network, but without it working good as it was before 10.4.5 (intel) I would have lost EVERYTHING.

Phew... I'm happy again!
