iPod Classic

I have an iPod classic and I cannot download any songs on it. It is constantly freezing my iPod when it is connected to my computer and it is constantly freezing my iTunes. I have reset my iPod and tried to restart my iTunes but nothing is working. I even followed the instructions on this site and I cannot even get 2 songs to show up on my iPod. What do I do now?

To be honest I haven't checked disk stats. I've brought the device to a Premium Reseller yesterday, since it's still under the three-months guarantee period, I expect they will give me another one (the fifth!). Next time (at this point I have a feeling there will be one...), I'll check. The cable is not always the same, so I don't think it's cable. I tried two Macs, one Mini with 10.6.8 and one MB Pro Retina 15" with Mavericks. Once the damage is done they both fail to restore the iPod. Once the iPod has "died" as soon as I connected it to the car (Opel Insignia, never had problems with iPod connection before, I still connect the iPhone or iPod nano without problems), the last time it "died" while it was playing, as soon as I scrolled back to menu and clicked to enter the playlists. The situations seem to change, it doesn' happen always in the same conditions. I read in some discussion of a possible lack of compatibility of iPod Classic with iTunes 11?

Thanks, Alessandro.

I followed all your steps and got

Retracts 3

Reallocs 2448

Pending sectors 0

Power on hours 55

Start/stops 5265

Temp: current 28c

Temp: min 9c

Temp: max 51c

I've only had the ipod since christmas and have never dropped it properly but I still can't restore it and nothing really seems to work. Will I have to get a new ipod or is there anything I can do?

I really hope someone sees this I know the thread is about 2 years old

Hi! I also had problems with my 2-year-old ipod classic gen 6th. Whenever I connected it to my laptop, it froze my itunes and I could not sync songs due to error 13010 as reported by itunes. I've tried so many ways to solve even restoring, deleting itunes liabrary genius file, etc. Before that my ipod still could play songs but only songs that were synced before, new songs, it could not, it only skipped them although all of them could be played well on itunes. Then I found this topic and followed the instruction here but unfortunately my disk utilities was still frozen and I could not complete the repairing step. For the test result I've got:

Retracts: 5

Reallocs: 792

Pending sectors: 2160

Power hour: 55

Start/stops: 4365

Temp: current 34c

Temp: min 15c

Temp: max 53c

Is there anything that I can do 😟 pls help I dont know what goes wrong with it anymore. Thanks.

Btw when I tried to erase on disk utilities, it reported that the operations could not be continue, it was corrupted.

Hi turingtest2,

I restored my iPod Classic 160gb (newest edition - just got in July) because I had a change of library, and since syncing it with iTunes, a lot of songs are skipping. They pause, and then switch to the next song. I've tried restoring it and syncing it again - some songs now play all the way through, but others still do not. I ran a diagnostic on it.

Retracts: 0
Reallocs: 0
Pending Sectors: 0
PowerOn Hours: 853
Start/Stops: 10435
Temp: Current 29C, Min 55C, Max 248C (I don't think it ever actually got this hot - maybe something is wrong with the temperature sensor.)

Since it doesn't look like there is anything with the hard drive, should I attempt deleting everything from my iTunes library and dragging it over again? I store my music on an external hard drive, which I must admit gives me a lot of connection issues. Perhaps that could be the issue, but I've never had this problem before; I've always been able to manage the loose connection. My last question: I recently couldn't find my Apple iPod connecter cord, so I've been using a third party one I found laying around in a drawer - could this also be the culprit?

Thank you so much for your time. My iPod is honestly very important to me - I'm going to school for music - so it physically pains me every time I watch/hear a song skip.

The temps are obviously wrong, but the rest of the stats look OK. The all songs skip after a given interval sounds vaguely familar but offhand I'm not sure where I saw it and a search hasn't found it.

Check that everything is working properly in the main iTunes library, then try the DFU restore method. My guess is some form of corruption of the database on the device.

Thanks so much for your reply.

I tried the DFU restore method; this didn't fix the problem, either. After some googling I tried to format my iPod and noticed it was in exFAT format. I managed to format it in fat32 and thought this had fixed the problem, and it didn't.

Do you have any more suggestions? In the mean time I think I will go buy a new cord just in case, and perhaps try to use a different usb port on my laptop. I am sure it is not my laptop/external hard drive; everything is playing just fine in iTunes.

Thanks again.

Alright, I think I've tried everything. Syncing in increments didn't help, I bought a new cable, used a different USB port on my laptop, formatted it through Windows, restored it a bunch of times. I've noticed that iTunes won't even recognize my iPod anymore if it is in disk mode, and now there are some retracts showing up if I run a diagnostic.

I have set up an appointment for Apple to call me; I hope I can send it in for servicing (I am still under the one-year warranty). The only thing I can think of now is that there is something wrong with where the iPod plugs in which is causing a faulty sync... I don't know.

Thank you so much for your help!

Hello to all. Very helpful discussion, thank you for the diagnostic information.

My classic HD is in pretty poor shape:

---------------------

Retracts 16

Reallocs 1256

Pending Sectores 1856

Temp Max 56c

----------------------

I don't think it can be saved. I have reset the iPod seveal times, but as it refuses to accept any new downloads from iTunes, I guess it is time to buy a new one..Boo hoo..

May 29, 2014 12:13 PM in response to turingtest2

I did the test on my classic (2010ish, 160gig) and got this:

retracts 8

reallocs 13112

pending sectors 0

power on hours 42

start stops 13857

temp curret 34c

temp min 65 c

temp max 245c

Obviously the temps are out of whack, and the reallocs are crazy high. It had been saying on the ipod that it had 0KB available...but after the handy ipod slap, it decided it had 146 gigs free (after a series of clicking noises inside). Problem is, it still freezes iTunes every time it's connected.

At this point, I usually use my phone for music anyway, but it's frustrating to have the thing sitting around not working (especially when I paid so much for it). Any hope for it?

Hi again turingtest2,

I sent my iPod off and they replaced it with a brand new one for me. Synced it last night; still having the freezing/skipping issues. Obviously I have some corrupted files in my iTunes, then? Is there any way I can figure out what it is that is causing the issue and fix it quickly (as I have 20+gb of music)?

Thank you so much,
Haylee

Thanks for your response. Most of my music (everything except for what I have purchased in iTunes) is already stored on an external hard drive - will this still work? Should I attempt moving all the music to my computer, re-adding everything to my iTunes library, and syncing without the use of my hard drive to rule it out as the problem? Thanks.

Jun 13, 2014 6:04 AM in response to turingtest2

So - developments!

I've been at work all week and was saving the attempted fixing for the weekend. But then I got to thinking. Everything is correct about how much music is on my iPod - if so many songs are cutting off at 0:49, surely I shouldn't have such a high amount of GB stored. So I tested things, and tried fast forwarding through the "broken" spots of the skipping songs. Music plays. I decided to try and play the same song again.... No skips.

It doesn't seem to work every time - I have to try fast forwarding through each "broken" spot a couple times and let it play a little bit, and eventually the songs stop skipping.

Weirdest fix ever.... But I'm so happy. Thought I would let you know in case anyone else is having this weird mystery issue.

Thanks a lot!
