iPod Classic

I have an iPod classic and I cannot download any songs on it. It is constantly freezing my iPod when it is connected to my computer and it is constantly freezing my iTunes. I have reset my iPod and tried to restart my iTunes but nothing is working. I even followed the instructions on this site and I cannot even get 2 songs to show up on my iPod. What do I do now?

Yes, I realize the stats do not look bad in comparison to others.

I've tried, new cables, other PC's - no recognition whatsoever.

Reset stays in reset mode or I can change it to Disk Mode, no ordinary menus appear. Each time I try to restore the PC's do not recognize the Ipod. I do have other Ipods that connect and are recognized.

I do not see anything that appears to be blocking the cable connection either?

Try placing it in disk mode and connect it to your PC while the PC is turned off. Then start up the computer. It is just possible that the computer might recognize the device and allow you to wipe the drive as in Erase your iPod - The Super Fix for most iPod Problems, after which an iTunes restore might be possible. If not then I'm out of ideas.

I have tried everything apple has suggested except using an apple brand cord to restore, (I'll be borrowing one and trying it soon.)

I came across this article on here,

http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/ipodsupport/erase/index.shtml

My only issue with trying this is that my vista computer wants to format to NTFS which I have also read Apple doesn't support. Only other format I'm showing is exFAT.

(supposed to be in response to turingtest2. my apologies)

I can't reformat or do anything with it while it's plugged into my computer (Win7). It says it's a RAW files sytem when I try to do anything in cmd/chck disk etc..

ok now i'm getting somewhere, once i reset i put it into disk mode, only the can i sync about 60 song's worth, then it interupts the sync with a message stating " itunes can not completethe sync as your ipod due to a problem with the ipod" blah blah need's formatting..so i format, then restore then back to square one, going round in very irritating circles of poop. help 😟

Something has obviously gone wrong at some point as the temperatures don't really make sense. Did the numbers change before and after the disk check? The reset may have been triggered if the drive wasn't able to find the tracks it was supposed to test, which again doesn't give much cause for optimism.

You can try a DFU reset or drive format to see if that will clear the remaining pending sectors into the reallocated group, but I suspect the drive is no longer healthy enough to be used for your media...

These numbers were before the disk check. After I did a disk check I looked at the SMARTdata again and this is what it said:

Retracts: 225

Start/Stops: 225

The pending sectors went down but resulted to an increase in Reallocs. I've formatted and have done a DFU reset twice already.

Hey tt2, it seems you are the man to talk to.

My ipod (Classic 5th Gen 80GB) stopped working today when i went to restore it to default, as a quick way to reformat and get rid of the content on it so as to sync new content, never had any problems like this before.

Same error message as everyone else it seems (1439). is it just me or does it seem to be affecting all the old models quite coincedentally at the same time? haha. anywho i digress...

I've read your other posts and tried all the suggestions, but none have worked so far. I ran the iPod self diagnostic and got the following results, I would be grateful if you could spare the time to tell me your opinion on it, :-

reallocs: 120

Pending Sectors: 0

Power on hours:328

Cheers to anyone who can shed some light on this.

High start/stop count, but not unreasonable for a 5th gen. I suppose. Reallocs is low and none pending is good news. It ought to behave... Try restoring using the following process. I assume it's valid for 5th gen. though I've only done it on my son's 6th gen. classic.

DFU Reset

Connect the classic to your computer with iTunes running then press and hold down Menu & Select like a normal reset but keep holding for 12 seconds. The iPod should reset as normal and then the screen should go black. iTunes should detect the device in recovery mode and offer to restore.

Other things to try are alternate ports, cables, and computers in case the issue is elsewhere in the chain.
