Listening in on this - having come from somewhere else with the same issue - it sems thare are three different problems people are tangling up.

  1. Transfer of ownership. I don't like the way Apple do it - but that's their way and I can chose them or not.
  2. Transfer of ID. This is an entirely separate issue - Apple seem to presume we will keep the same ID (aka email) all our lives. That is wholly wrong - for example my daughters get emails from their school, and when they change school they change email. The school then actually recycles the emails after a sensible period if someone new arrives with the same name. Linking ID to an email is thus daft - plain and simple.
  3. Explanation. Here I fear Apple is guilty as ****. I cut my teeth on Assembler almost 50 years ago - and lived a life in Fortran for many years. However I cannot begin to work out how the Apple ecosystem works, and certainly can't work it out in advance of - for example - picking an ID which I think is disposable then discovering I am stuck with it for life. What would help hugely is a simple, written, piece explaining how Authorisation, IDs, and all the other panoply of 'belonging' in the Apple ecosystem work. It's no good just discovering it by accident. All it does is annoy people, and create a massive negative atmosphere. A simple user guide that isn't trying to sell you things would be a great help! Does anyone there care though? I fear not!

Apple recommends you change your Apple ID to your current, working email address. This will not create another Apple ID, it will only change it to your working email address. See How to change the name you use for your Apple ID if you'd like more information.

Note: @mac.com and @me.com Apple IDs can not be renamed. If you no longer use the .mac or .me email address be sure to add your valid email address as an additional email address.

Just want to add that I second (most) of your reasoning. I'm in the position where I've several Mac devices within the family and one two that I'd like to have the apps shared upon (an iPhone and iPad), I've got a different apple ID's on these two devices, respectively, so it appears to be cumbersome to "share" apps across the two. I will import the iPhone apps onto the iPad by separately logging into the related Apple ID, but I do wish it were more seamless. I should've planned the whole thing a lot more prudently. My son mainly uses the iPad, but some of his games are on my iPhone, bought with my ID, while he has his own apple ID on the iPad and he'd have to re-purchase those apps to have them all sorted under his own ID, barring the transfering of them over.

I don't exploit either the iPhone or iPad enough (yet) to want to "jailbreak" either, but the increased flexibility (and the ability to transfer ownership) is attractive as is the concommitant ability to continue to use apps from Itunes store on an iPhone with an alternate OS. The several people I know who have jailbroken their phones (specifically 4 and 4s) have all been able to restore the apple iOS when desired, so I don't see a problem.

I hate to bring up old topics, but I am searching for a similar answer. I tried to read though all the posts looking for a well reasoned explanation and got tired of the childish bickering.

I want to abandon my original apple ID since the email address I had for many many years, has finally been overrun with spam.

So I read the entire RIDICULOUS 11 pages of this thread trying to see if I could move all my apps to a brand new clean apple ID ...

Most of the people on here seemed decent and wanted to do something similarly honest and moral.

I found Allan Sampson's replies in this thread addressed what most readers probably have come to this thread for in the first place:

There is nothing preventing someone from having apps on their iOS device that were downloaded with more than one iTunes account, but app updates can be installed with the iTunes account that was used to download the apps only.

This sort of reply, written in plain, simple, direct English, had it been written earlier, would've probably lessened the length of the thread, if not the amusement that other replies generated.

I'm off to combine the apps from two different accounts on an iPad: if I encounter any problems, I'll certainly let y'all know 🙂

Well, I just transferred purchases from one Apple ID to another.

What happend? I bought an MacBook Air and set it up with Apple ID "A". But the MacBook was intended to be used by a different person with Apple ID "B", which I didn't know at the time I set up the MacBook, so I had to take some and took "A".

Therefore, all the iLife-Applications (iPhoto, iMovie, Garage Band) that were shipped with the MacBook belong to Account "A" - which I do not want, as many of you in this thread. I want to give the MacBook to "B", and also the apps that originally shipped. No way to do so.

I completely formatted the SSD and reinstalled Mountain Lion, but when opening the App Store, "B" could only buy iLife Apps. Apple somehow mapped them to the MacBook, but a different account.

So it took a long phone call with apple support (which is free in the first 90 days after purchase 😀 ), and - using a tiny bit of angry voice - about 50 Minutes later account "B" could adopted the iLife-Applications that initially belonged to "A". Still downloading 🙂...

My conclusion is: It is possible to transfer Apps from one account to the other, but you have to talk a while with the support team. It's more or less a manual step for them. I hope all of you soon call and try to get your transfers done - maybe then they will implement some self-service in the app store in the future.

Cheers,

Andreas

You are mistaken. You had the MacBook Air itself deregistered from the original Apple ID that was used to set it up, which opens it up to be registered to another Apple ID and which brings with it the installed operating system and the iLife apps. That's a very different situation than transfering regular MAS content or merging accounts. Had you also bought a bunch of apps to use on that MBA, they would still be yours and no amount of raised voice would have gotten them transferred to another Apple iD.

Well, you might be right. The point is: It was not possible to do this by self-service, and there is no such thing as a self-serviced "deregistration". Simply formatting everything and reinstalling it didn't prevent Apple to recoginize that iLife was "once" bundled with the MBA, but with a different account. There was no way to "adopt" iLife apps; only when logging into the App Store with ID "A" showed iLife as being "acceptable".

I've been sharing an apple and iTunes account with my x for over a year, she bought something with PayPal and none of us have a CPU to get on iTunes and switch payment forms back to a credit card so now we can't update apps or even download free ones. I'm on an iPad and want to sign out of that account and into a new one. Ill rebuy all my apps and music I bought, I just don't want my iPad to like restore and lose all my pictures, as I have no way of backing them up. Any help with this? Much appreciated.

Considering the nature of this thread, you would do well to start a new one.

However: Deleting the current AppleID and creating a new one should not delete your pictures.Signing on with a new one will remove access to any iCloud backup you have.

Open the Settings app, select iTunes & App Stores.. Tap the ID and sign out. From there you can create a new ID (instruction on the page should be self explanatory)

Yeah at first I came here to find out how to transfer my purchases but we can't fix that account so I want to just sign out of ours, delete my apps, sign into my new account and purchase most of the apps and music I had. Like I said I was just worried when I do that, that it may restore to factory settings or try to like sync and then I lose all my photos and videos. I would back them up but no laptop or CPU and it'd take awhile to send them to an email. Thanks for your help..
