Transfer purchases to another ID

Seems strange to me too. In other words under new family sharing (coming in iOS 8) you would have the organizer (main individual) with an external address but could have all other members with an iCloud address, seems a little weird. Also the unfortunate thing about using non iCloud addresses is that you cannot use all services (notes as an example).

Who says you can't? I have an external email address and can sync Notes to iCloud just fine on my iPad. I can then retrieve them on my iPhone using the same Apple ID.

As to the family sharing, I don't believe the sub accounts can be just iCloud email accounts either. They would still need to be full fledged apple id's with their external base email address, but will be attached to the main Apple Id for purchase sharing purposes.

Phil, on my mac, i go into iCloud (within settings) which is currently set as my @gmail address. Notes is left unchecked. Check it (under that same account) and only get the option to login with an @iCloud account to use notes

What do you mean by that last part?

I too use my @gmail address as my Apple ID and have no problem using iCloud Notes on my Mac, iPad, and iPhone ... and they all sync to each other perfectly (unlike using gmail or Yahoo notes, those have a lot of issues).

Do you have more than one Apple ID? (you can have multiple IDs)

Thanks for the reply. What I mean is when I click the notes checkbox in iCloud settings on my MBP I get a popup that says 'choose an iCloud email address to use notes with iCloud' and no option to just enable it on my gmail address currently signed into iCloud

Ahh, now I see. First thing is, an iCloud account and iCloud email account are two separate things, and it sounds like you only have an iCloud account (which comes with your Apple ID). The default iCloud account that comes with your Apple ID is used for storing your backup in iCloud, Photo Stream, and a few other services. An iCloud email account is an additional step you take to get additional iCloud services such as iCloud Mail, Contacts, Notes, etc.

Read this article and set up an iCloud email account, that is the only way to use iCloud Notes:

Using your Apple ID for Apple services

You do not have to actually use any of these additional services, but if you want to use Notes you have to set up the email account to enable it.

Hello! Can you please explain how to do that ("set up an iCloud email account")? I have my very old @gmail apple ID and all my purchases have made using this account and now i can't use notes (i have the same situation to simlid). So, how i can use my old @gmail apple id with all iCloud features? To be clear here - i have 2 iCloud accounts at this moment - @gmail and @icloud. @icloud created special for having ability to use all iCloud features. Thank you!

Perhaps a bit of clarification is needed. Your Apple ID is your @gmail address, and this initially gave you an iCloud account for storage (backups, Photo Stream, etc.) You've taken the additional step by setting up an iCloud email address (@icloud). It's really all just one account; I only stated that an @icloud email address is a "2nd account" to differentiate that from someone who just has an iCloud storage account for their Apple ID.

With that clarification, if you've set up an iCloud email address all you need to do is turn on the features you want to do in your device settings (Mac and/or iOS devices). On iOS there is an iCloud account profile by default (if you're signed into iCloud) which lets you turn features on or off. On the Mac, I don't think iCloud is automatically set up as an account so you need to create your iCloud account profile in your Mac settings, then enable Notes or whatever else you want to use in iCloud.

This is a right post for that, don't worry. I want to merge or transfer or just use all of my purchases on a single account. About clarification - this is a two different iCloud accounts not a single one. My @icloud account - old @me account, thats wy i have a @me email as an alternative. To be sure - i have switched account in iTunes from @gmail to @icloud and no purchases available on this account. So, how to use all iCloud features on a @gmail apple id - this is a wired thing.

As has been stated many times in this and other threads, Apple does not allow transferring purchases between Apple IDs. There is not workaround. You simply cannot do it.

The iCloud account is separate. All features are available to all accounts but this has nothing to do with your Apple ID purchases. You can however use the Apple ID used for your purchases as your iCloud account.

I think you can deauthorize those computers and then you will have access to the licenses once again.

With the newly introduced "family sharing", one ID can share purchases with family members. A feature long sought after. Now that it's here, a question:

I, as many, many people, had set up in the past a separate Apple ID just for purchases and individual Apple ID's for me and other family members and their devices (for email, icloud etc.). So how do I go about getting this "right" with the new family sharing option? Since I cannot merge IDs nor transfer purchases to one of the other Apple IDs and then get rid of the old "purchases only" Apple ID, does this new feature even make sense in my situation? I can stick to my old solution but since it was a workaroud in the first place, now that they have finally introduced a proper family sharing, I would like to make a switch.

You can use the "purchases only" ID as the main ID to share them from. This will become the parent Id for the other ID's form where they'll share purchases.

It will need to have a valid payment form (i.e credit card) setup for it.

You can set up the ID from Settings->iCloud->Setup Family Sharing.

Make sure you are logged in to that ID on iCloud when you start the process.

You can then add other ID's under that main ID to share purchases from it.

I hoped it could be (finally) possible to merge/transfer duplicate ID's and create just one, then share from it.

I guess I can make my "purchases" ID my only ID by copying contacts, calendar etc. from my "icloud" ID to "purchases" ID. I wonder though, if I attach a secondary email to "purchases" ID that was previously my "icloud" ID's email, will it accept and verify or say that email address was in use.

This really should not be made that difficult. Merging IDs or transfering content should not be impossible. Restricted and regulated, yes, but not impossible. If I own two IDs there is no logical reason why they couldn't be merged.

I'm having a significant issue based on your suggestion. In the past, for reasons unknown (even to me) I linked my two appleIDs addresses by accident. I have never been able to separate, or merge the two IDs to return to functionality. Currently I can't remove any addresses from either and in fact the original appleID address doesn't work (gets a auto reply saying it's an "illegal alias"). I have apple care senior advisor and now an engineer working on it (have been workeignon my appleIDs in recovery mode for about 2 weeks so far). As far as I know the engineer is now "Due to the complexity of your issue, in order to resolve it, the engineer has to gain approvals from other people. He is working on getting those approvals and resolving the issue."

I'd recommend not trying to add one appleID address to another!
