No sound from MacBook Pro

Last week, I tried to play music through my MacBook Pro. No sound is coming from either my internal speakers OR my headphone jack. I feel like I read a million threads but none of them seem to apply to my issue. In my Settings>Sound it still displays my "Internal Speakers - Built-in" as the sound output. When I try to adjust the volume, the icon appears normally on the screen. There is no line through it, or simply doesnt work, as other users have posted. I have no red light shining from my headphone jack. Headphones also do not work. Everything (software Wise) seems to be set up exactly as it should be, but still no sound! Could this be a hardware issue? From the time my sound worked to when it stopped working my MBP was just sitting on my desk! Not sure what else to try. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i just had a problem with this with my roommate's macbook. this video should apply to either macbook or macbook pro. basically you'll need a safety pin and a pliers (to bend the safety pin at the tip into an L shape). best of luck. this is definitely a hardware issue, and it's not too hard to fix. just check out the video. best of luck. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLG6OS8tz3U

Another possible solution:

I have recently installed "AirParrot" which mimicks my screen to an AppleTV. This is because my MBP is to old for the new Lion OX AirPlay feature. Within the app you need to select an output device to play the audio through. Once you exit the app you don't always regain audio back to your speakers for everything. It had me stumped for a while because I was getting all notification tones but sound from YouTube and iTunes was zippo.

Always the first place to go is to check your Sound Output settings in preferences. 😉

Additionally to no sound available, I could only type capital letters. When I opened my MacBook Pro late 2008, I found the small cable loose, marked by the red arrow. Opened the safety mechanisem, inserted it again, closed the stirrup again, restart - everything fine again! :-))

Hope it helps somebody else - I lost hours troubleshooting the software...

Similar fix, on a 17" i7 Macbook Pro: the headphone jack in then out method didn't work, or it worked but then got "broken" again and again.

Sticking the jack in changed the device from optical digital output to headphone, but upon removing the jack it reverted to optical digital, and this didn't change even after many reapeats, restarts etc: each time I pulled the jack out, the Sound prefs showed headphone changing back to optical digital.

Then I tried this: opened Sound prefs, went to the pane for device for sound output, stuck the headphone jack in, at which the device name changed to headphone, then I clicked on the line showing headphone, but I *held the mouse button down*, and while holding it down removed the jack. This made the device name change to internal speaker, and it worked again...

Does this mean it is both a hardware and a software issue?
