No sound from MacBook Pro

Last week, I tried to play music through my MacBook Pro. No sound is coming from either my internal speakers OR my headphone jack. I feel like I read a million threads but none of them seem to apply to my issue. In my Settings>Sound it still displays my "Internal Speakers - Built-in" as the sound output. When I try to adjust the volume, the icon appears normally on the screen. There is no line through it, or simply doesnt work, as other users have posted. I have no red light shining from my headphone jack. Headphones also do not work. Everything (software Wise) seems to be set up exactly as it should be, but still no sound! Could this be a hardware issue? From the time my sound worked to when it stopped working my MBP was just sitting on my desk! Not sure what else to try. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Use a paper clip

I have had this problem several times. Somewhere, I read that it had to do with a fault in the jack and the suggestion was to insert a paper clip in the jack and fiddle with it until the sound comes back. This morning, I tried initially with a paper clip and nothing happened, but when I doubled up the paper clip (insert both ends in the jack), it fixed my problem. If all else fails, that might be worth considering.

My GOD! I went getting crazy today with this as well! I was reading your posts, and the reset thing didn't do anything at all. But earlyer today at one point the sound came back. Then tonight nothing again...

Then I read your jack and paperclip thing. But I didn't have any of that with me. Well I blew onto the jack hole. And VOILA!! Sound is back!

Weird behaviour...

It's been very rewarding to have helped so many of you... this late in the thread. Once a month, at least, I get mail from people my solution has helped. Cheers to all of you, glad to have helped.

Unfortunately I have a bitter taste in my mouth for Apple at the moment, so consider this a hail and fair well, hopefully my solution will help more of you in the future, cause honestly... don't hold you breathe waiting for Apple to fix the problem.

You may wish to update iTunes, install the latest version, "force quit" and re-open iTunes, or update you OS entirely.

As for the Speaker issue. Try using Apple ear buds, or other headphones that have bluetooth capability. While the headphones are plugged in, toggle the volume switches until you hear sound. You can test the sound by turning on "play feedback when volume is changed"... within the Settings--> sound.

Hope this works for you. Beyond this, you'll probably want to go to an Apple store to have it further diagnosed.

I've read it all. I didn't see whether my problem is shown. In System Preferences/Sound the internal speaker option is not even present to select. Nothing I've done has brought it back. The speaker icon in the top menu bar is black and the slider works - but NO SOUND. When I play a video, the no sound icon is displayed. I reinstalled the system (snow leopard) without flushing everything out giving an empty drive. I may do that next it was suggested with the idea that something in the content of my hard drive causes this. I tried resetting NVRAM and SMC. Nothing is working. All that appears in the Sound pane in System Preferences is BoomDevice (Which I have not yet bought - so it's there but not an option) and Digital Out. I can get the light in the earphone plug to go on and off by plugging the earphone jack in and out repeatedly, and I keep it off. So what should I do next? If I activate Boom Device by paying $7, will that fix it? I don't want to waste the $7. And what about going into the Terminal - and what would I do there?

WOW! I solved my problem after a day of messing around. I have Boom trial version on my computer, and until I BOUGHT it, it prevented me from using internal speakers! I ALSO went into preferences and trashed them, rebooting - and that got rid of the "Optical Audio Out" which was the only other option that had appeared other than Boom before I trashed original preferences. FINALLY!

Hi guys, I recently had the same problem: no sound of internal speakers anymore and (sometimes) a red light in the headphone socket. In my case it was DEFINITELY a hardware problem.I use my MBP a lot with headphones/external amplifier, so I guess after a while the switch inside gets 'confused'. Solution: force the switch inside the socket into its original position with whatever you have available... For some people the headphone plug might work, but for me a simple paperclip did the job! Of course, be gentle... You can feel/hear the switch clicking into the correct position and voilà: there's your sound again! (according to Apple Support you should service your MBP when seeing this red light....yeah right)
