No sound from MacBook Pro

Last week, I tried to play music through my MacBook Pro. No sound is coming from either my internal speakers OR my headphone jack. I feel like I read a million threads but none of them seem to apply to my issue. In my Settings>Sound it still displays my "Internal Speakers - Built-in" as the sound output. When I try to adjust the volume, the icon appears normally on the screen. There is no line through it, or simply doesnt work, as other users have posted. I have no red light shining from my headphone jack. Headphones also do not work. Everything (software Wise) seems to be set up exactly as it should be, but still no sound! Could this be a hardware issue? From the time my sound worked to when it stopped working my MBP was just sitting on my desk! Not sure what else to try. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

violets-and-lilies

Just put a phone jack in phone output.

With the phone jack connected, go to volume and make some adjusts. Just this.

When you take the phone jack away, the sound ail be perfect and all the outs will be showing in preferences and menu bar.

Tks

After plugging headphones in, adjusting the volume, and unplugging them, Sound Prefs show Internal Speakers (Built-In) again and my Macbook Pro is back to normal.

This is happening with astounding frequency. I can hear sound effects, but no YouTube, iTunes etc.

I am a heavy user of Dictation. And I know that Dictation has a way of cutting down all sound to zero.

But I haven't found a connection between Dictation in this no volume problem. ITunes and YouTube have the book of playing music. The volume meter is up. But there's not a lick of sound.

The level of technical expertise on this board has me worried. It can't be this complicated to fix can it? Apple, help!

Even though this solution was posted a while ago, the issue just happened to me using my iPhone6 headphones. Plugged the headphones in, they worked just fine, put had to pull the plug in and out slightly before the internal speakers showed in the sound panel of System Preferences. It now works fine, thanks to you. Saved me a trip to the Apple Store. What amazes me is that after 3 years, this situation still exists.

Hi. I have no sound at all. No startup chime. No red light in the headphone socket. Sound Prefs shows Internal Speaker (Built-In) as normal. Sound control keys and slider work as normal. Reseted PRAM and VRAM. Erased SSD and installed fresh El Capitan. Still no sound from internal speakers nor headphones. What else I can do? How I can check the logic board for hardware issues? Thanks. Thomas (MacBook Pro A1278)
