iTunes 10.6 crashing after upgrade

I just upgraded iTunes to 10.6, but it crashes everytime I open it.

I'm under Snow Leopard (10.6.8).

Thanks in advance for any suggestion or solution.

I was looking for the instructions on how to do this from a different compter, and now I can't find it but the itl file is the itunes linrsry file which tells itunes where all your files are located. You can read about it here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660

I think it had me close itunes first and then delete that itl file then start itunes and this will require you to re-add everything back to your library hence creating a new itl file. This also seemed to have changed my default settings. In the process it made my cover-art icons small which is why itunes is working now. However you can not slide the size bar to the right because it will crash itunes again

I would not delete the itl file unless you have very clear instructions on how to do it. You do not want to screw it up more than it is. When I get back if I can find the instructions again I will post it. Hopefully somebosy else has it.

There are other issues with 10.6 when it comes to iTunes photo sync, and there is a work arounfd that posted on page 8 of this thread. Me personally I would not do an update to 10.6 it has been nothing but a headache.

If your going to do the update change the default of your icons to a smaller size before the update and at least that way it will work and not crash by simply selecting the music and movies.

The issue I have read so far is the cover art size and the photo sync issues, but there might be more so just wait for a fix before any updates.

I sympathize with everyone who's trying so valiantly to get 10.6 to work, but my thinking is that it's a lot better -- and a whole lot less stressful -- to just go back to 10.5.3 and wait for Apple to fix the new version so it works properly. Why should anyone have to jump through hoops like upgrading iPhoto or deleting your cover art and the like? My hope is that by the time my new iPad arrives, an update that fixes the crashing problem will be available.

Thanks so much for your post, it really helped me. I was on the phone with Apple tech this morning for 45 minutes trying different stuff, after which it seemed to help me out and finally got iTunes NOT to crash at startup with 10.6. I thought all was good, that was until I hooked up my iPhone. Then the app crashed again, Sheez! Now that I restored it back to 10.5.3 all is good again. Beware of updates, I should have known better. In addition I did an update at the same time to fix an issue with Time Machine not working. Needless to say my Time Machine backup is now NOT working since the update. It was working just fine before. Note to self, "If it's not broke don't FIX it, or update it!"

Putting this together based on what worked for me, thanks davidashe and TommyLee_

Step 1:

  • Re: iTunes 10.6 crashing after upgrade

  • First you need to get rid of the 10.6 version. If you try to trash it, or write over it, you will get a message saying that it can't be modified as it is needed by the OS. Select the app and 'Get Info'. In the permissions, change them all to read&write (you will need to type in an admin password).
  • Now trash the app.

Step 2:

Step 3.

Remove .itl and .xml files from the music/itunes directory (put them on the desktop). Install itunes 10.5.3, and then import the .xml file.

Like everybody else, my iTunes 10.6 keeps crashing too! I deleted the app and tried restoring the 10.5.3 version from Time Machine, but once it has been restored it says 'The file "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." It then asks whether I want to download 10.6.... which I obviously don't! Any ideas what I am doing wrong? I had similar issues with Apple last year when I updated iPhoto... I wasn't too amused when I lost ALL my photos. Thank God for Time Machine!

I deleted the cache like HomerSimp said and it worked. It took several tries for me to get it to stick. I had to lower the the zoom below 50% for it to work in the grid artwork view.

There is still the problem of watching TV shows in full screen; it goes Kaboom! To watch TV shows in full screen I use QuickTime Player (I locate episodes via Finder and control click the episode I want to watch then choose "Open With" then select Quicktime). You can also just open Quicktime and click File at the top of screen then choose Open File and navigate to where you keep your TV shows and play them in full screen that way too.

Deleting the cache did not help my Audio Books. It still causes iTunes to crash in grid view, so I left it in album list view.

What a mess......
