iTunes 10.6 crashing after upgrade

I just upgraded iTunes to 10.6, but it crashes everytime I open it.

I'm under Snow Leopard (10.6.8).

Thanks in advance for any suggestion or solution.

This FIXED the problem for me - on Snow Leopard on MAC

1- Go to iTunes folder inside the MUSIC folder.

2- Drag 2 files to your desktop (so that iTunes will recreate them):

2a- iTunes Library.itl

2b - iTunes Music Library.xml

3- THEN - start iTunes and it should not crash.

4- THEN Import the iTunes library xml file that you just dragged out to the desktop.

Everything should be just fine at that point and everything should be working OK.

Thanks DickSwee. I can now view both TV shows and Audio Books in grid view since the process you describe put a default size of less than 50% on the grid views of each. However, if I enlarge over 50%....Kaboom! TV episodes still crash iTunes when I go to full screen. Partial fix for me, but thanks for the partial, better than before!

I didn't time it, but the process took about 30 mins to import that xml file, and my library isn't that large, but I do have a lot of audio books and they took a while to import. I have a fair amount of TV shows too but I wasn't at the computer to see how long they took.

As far as the Official word question OzziesMAC asked about, I haven't heard for sure, but I called my local Apple Store and the rep I spoke with said they haven't heard of the iTunes 10.6 crash problem. Maybe those of us having problems should call their local store to raise some awareness, or is there a better way to do this?

Also, what I find interesting is that it appears that the Mac and Windows versions both have problems.

After reading this entire thread I see so many of you trying different "solutions" in the hope that your problems with 10.6 will be solved. I can't help but think that most of these fixes will be temporary at best.

Yesterday I updated my iPad 2 and my iPod Touch 4G to IOS 5.1, which seemed to go quite well. Then I went on to update both of my Apple TVs and that too went well. So....today when I started up iTunes to sync my iPod I got the message about the new version of iTunes being available.

I tried over and over to install 10.6 on my PC today. After about 6 times of getting an error message, the gist of which was that it couldn't install, I finally went onto the Apple website and downloaded the installer that way. After double-clicking on the installer .exe file all seemed to be going well for a bit, until a notice popped up saying that it could not install the iPod finder (or whatever on earth they called it...it was the file that detects your device). It gave me the option to retry, which I did several times. Eventually a window popped up asking if I wished to continue anyway or roll back to my previous version of iTunes. I chose to roll back to 10.5.3, and after everything I've read here I am glad I did. 10.5.3 still works perfectly well, even with the new IOS installed on my devices. I DO NOT, by the way, even have iPhoto installed on my computer.

I agree with the poster a page or two back who said we should not be having to jump through hoops to get this software to work. It should not have been released unless it was working flawlessly under every scenario. When we pay over $800.00 for an iPad and more than $300.00 for an iPod the least we should be able to expect is that software enabling functionality for those devices works properly. It was once a known Microsoft method of testing a product....dump it on an unsuspecting public and find out the bugs without having to pay developers to do so. It was generally believed that Apple didn't do such things.😟

I have a question for everyone about the .xml file in the iTunes folder. After "upgrading" to 10.6 that file was there. But when I did the Time Machine "downgrade" to 10.5.3 that file was not in the iTunes folder. I restored the .itl and the .itlb files but left the .xml file be. And that file continues to be modified by iTunes 10.5.3. So I am just leaving it alone. But I am perplexed about why it was not there in Time Machine. Maybe it was an invisible file??

Anyone have a clue about this?

I had the same problem with iTunes crashing on connection of my iPhone after installing Lion. I solved it as follows:

The issue was not with iTunes but with iPhoto. Lion didn't like the '09 version of the program I was running and when trying to sync the photos on my iPhone with my photo library an error occurred that caused iTunes to crash. I upgraded to iPhoto'11 via the App store which fixed the problem.

I had some trouble downloading the program though. When I tried to purchase the new software it actually said something along the lines of "you already have version 8.something which was not bought in the App store. Would you like to upgrade to version 9.something" (sorry, didn't make a note of the actual numbers I'm afraid!). I clicked the 'purchase' button and then the 'install' button but nothing seemed to happen. Restarting the computer did not solve the problem either, but when I finally opened Launchpad I could see the program was geared to download but had paused. Clicking on the program icon started the download. I rebooted after installation, just to be safe, and iPhoto opened up fine. Importing the photo library into the new software took a little while but after that everything seemed OK. I opened up iTunes and connected my iPhone which finally completed a full synchronisation.

One final small glitch occurred when the sync seemed to hang on 'uploading artwork' to my iPhone (?), but I quit the program, rebooted my Mac (just to be safe), reopened iTunes and tried again. All worked well and my iPhone was synchronised fully within minutes.

Hope this is of help and you get your iTunes sorted :-)

Add me to the list of those who crashed. I've tried everything short of reinstalling from Time Machine. The only consistency that I can see is that when iTunes tries to sync photos with my iPhone or iPad the crash occurs. If I turn off the wiFi connection so that iTunes doesn't have to deal with syncing with other peripherials it seems to operate normally.
