iTunes 10.6 crashing after upgrade

I just upgraded iTunes to 10.6, but it crashes everytime I open it.

I'm under Snow Leopard (10.6.8).

Thanks in advance for any suggestion or solution.

I found the solution! At least it worked with me.

If you have this problem in iTunes for Mac OS X

1) Go to Music>iTunes>iTunes Media> And copy the folders Music, Movies, ... to your desktop. Once you have copied all the folders delete the ones in the iTunes Media folder.

2) Then go to Music>iTunes>iTunes Library.itl and delete the file iTunes Library.itl

3) When you open iTunes you will see that you have no music in your library so go to your desktop and drag the folder Music,Movies, etc to iTunes. This way iTunes will create a new library file and you won't have the problem message at launching!

I hope I could help 😉

Same issue here. Spent hours on the phone with AppleCare reintalling things, removing plists, recreating the library. Always iTunes would crash. I think there is a bug associated with the way it handles album art. I have it installed on my Macbook Air and if I increase the size of the album artwork beyond 50% it crashes. It crashes immediately on my Imac (I suspect bc the screen is considerable larger and is displaying larger album art). I will try to revert back to iTunes 10.5.3 tonight.

I fixed mine. First open the Preferences for iTunes 10.6 and change the settings the Read & Write. Go to Applications and Delete iTunes 10.6. Open Time Capsule and restore iTunes 10.5 from a backup if you have one. If not there is a link someone posted to download 10.5 from Apple.

Hold the Option key while clicking iTunes 10.5 to launch. Choose library, point to your Library folder but inside there SHOULD be a folder called Previous iTunes Library. Use that and open iTunes. This worked for me. If you try to open the updated ITL file from 10.5 version it wont work.

As a side note, Im a DJ with 72000+ songs in iTunes. This was a nightmare for me but lucky I didnt have any gigs this weekend.

my configuration is (was): iMac OS 10.7.3, 2 user accounts, iPhoto9, Ipad2 + iphone4, both 5.1.

After loading iTunes 6 the following happened:

User 1: everything was fine, iTunes6 synced as usual.

User 2: itunes crashed everytime when connected with ipad or iPhone

???

So I looked for the difference and found:

User 1: Sync settings: NO sync with iPhoto

User 2: Sync settings: sync iPhoto, but as iTunes always crashed shortly after connecting the device there was no possibilty to change the Sync settings.

My solution:

after installing iPhoto11 everything worked fine on both, user1 and user2 !

So for me it's clear that iTunes 6 does not work with iPhoto 9 or older.

Can't even open the application so can't open the preferences.

and change the settings the Read & Write.

You mean Get info on the iTunes file in the Finder and change the Permissions.

Open Time Capsule and restore iTunes 10.5 from a backup if you have one.

You mean open Time Machine (which is an application). Time Capsule is a network/wifi drive.

No, don't do that and open iTunes.

Copy the latest iTunes library.itl file from Previous iTunes libraries folder to the iTunes folder and rename it iTunes library.itl. (the get copied here & renamed with the date when you updated iTunes.

Then open iTunes.

I also had the same problem with the ITunes 10.6 upgrade. My machine kept locking up just like all the others. This thread saved me $50. I followed the directions and reverted to my older version of ITunes. I appreciate the help. Next time I will think twice before automatically upgrading my Apple software. Thanks to all.

Okay. I followed theguypostingacomment's directions above to revert to the previous iTunes version. No more iTunes 10.6 I wish I had done this yesterday instead on the hours I spent on the phone with Apple deleting plists, creating dummy user accounts, reinstalling iTunes, recreating my library. They were about to ask me to reinstall my operating system. All this and it was just a buggy upgrade they pushed out.

I spent 3 hours with 4 different Apple Care reps over the weekend trying to navigate through this mess. Every possible solution was attempted - restoring the library, reinstalling iTunes, etc - and today I sit with the issue unresolved. (However, I have been promised a call tomorrow, Tuesday, March 13th to tell me...?...not quite sure. I was told that my issues were being forwarded to an engineer – whatever that even means – if it’s a valid statement.)

Nonetheless, three of the four reps were certain that there was nothing wrong with iTunes 10.6 and that there had to be an orphan file creating the havoc. I had one rep towards the end of the call affirm for me that the software is defiantly at fault and that there has been chatter internally that 10.6 isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

This morning, in between crashes, I noticed that iTunes won’t even update podcasts.

I’m not sure what the turn-around is on patches, but I hope Apple does so soon. In my work, iTunes plays an integral role and this has been a nightmare.

Has anyone else spoken to a rep? If so, have they acknowledged that there’s something amiss?

Mar 12, 2012 12:39 PM in response to Huckle Murry

Yep. I spoke to three or four of them as well, even a couple level 2. Same routine. They aren't going to acknowledge that 10.6 is buggy. They never do. They'll just quietly fix it and release an update.

Just revert back to the previous version and wait for 10.6.1 Apple told me downgrading to the previous version wasn't possible but if you follow the instructions above and rename the .itl file from your previous library, it will work.

Mar 12, 2012 12:52 PM in response to Deni Kasama

I upgraded my iTunes to 10.6 when I got the prompt from the software updater. I immediately noticed that 10.6 has a problem. It crashes a few minutes after opening.

I uninstalled the 10.6 and reinstall the version lower than that. It works fine. So definitely there is a problem with 10.6 so I'll just use the lower version until Apple release a version higher than 10.6 and hopeuflly they already fix the bug that's causing all of this.

It's not our computers. It's the 10.6 version itself.

Hello everyone. It seems as if jumping back to version 10.5 of iTunes is working to fix the problem. But what about this issue of the update? Is Apple going to release something for us? How long do we have to wait? Typically, how long are the periods between updates? Does anyone have any other suggestions apart from going back a version in iTunes?

Thanks for your help.

Mar 12, 2012 3:32 PM in response to csthielen

Totally agree.

Being relatively new to mac I expected a lot more than this from Apple. I have a 450Gb music library and don't relish the prospect of back loading it all to a previous itunes release.

This is as bad as windows OS which I thought I'd escaped from. I dont want to start messing about with deleting files and moving file locations - it's the job of Apple to make sure that any software release is up to the job and clearly 10.6 is not. I can't even get iTunes to open in any way and am immediately hit with an error message on trying to open.

The silence from Apple over this is a disgrace and an insult to their customers.

Next time I hear Apple shout 'It just works' I'll laugh because it just doesn't.
